The Middle of Calgary

The latest (greatest? last?) geography video, after doing the highest and lowest elevations someone asked me to locate the middle.

The Middle of Calgary

Comments

I wondered if the pole of inaccessiblility results in the same location as the centroid of composite parts. I must say, I genuinely appreciate videos with curiosity and technical approach over listening to Torontonians wax pompous received wisdom.

Speaking as a GIS professional, <3

Jake G

Finally caved and subbed for this because I had to know the answer for next time I drive down to Calgary 🥰 Love the smaller explorations here Dan, thank you!

Mitch Dyer

The thing I like about the pole of inaccessibility is that it's the only definition that guarantees the center is inside the shape, even if it's concave

Purajit Malalur

I was really hoping that you would find the center of gravity of Calgary, by cutting out a maps and hanging it with a string and weight. It would have been the perfect amount of dumb. https://www.scienceworld.ca/resource/finding-centre-gravity/

Mike

It has ended at the middle. That's almost zen like.

James Rule

Aw I don't want this series to end 😊 There Have to be other parameters along which to Document your Hometown in this Manner. Or you could do other places that mean something to you. Or maybe this project has simply found its natural endpoint🙂

Peak Calgary

Tom

this was cool!

Lily Alexandre

Now can we get all the exploration vids combined as a spoof tourist ad for Calgary?

Kathy Clysm

Really dig the cinematic cartography videos.

Eleanor Ford

Not far from where my inlaws live! Would love to see a map of these various centers to know how far apart they are!

Eleanor Ford

Nice to stumble upon this video in the middle of the Internet.

As a patron, I love these little low-stakes vids. I've seen more than one content creator try to make "low effort" patreon content that eventually ballooned in scope, but I genuinely enjoy these little nuggets of interestingness that aren't made predictable by trifling things like "having a point" or "mattering". It's liberating, and you're a good enough videographer by this point that we know whatever you make will be worth the time to watch.

Declan Maguire

"The most inside Calgary you can be" is just such a delightful turn of phrase for me, I don't know why. :D (Also, I typoed when first writing this as the 'the moist inside Calgary' and... maybe that's the next thing to investigate? :P)

Oliver 'Kannik' Bollmann

"where is the middle of somewhere?" is a kinda vsauce-ey question

Dawbz

I was going to recommend finding the center of gravity as if the city were a perfectly flat piece of cardboard with even weight distribution, but I don't know if this is equivalent to any of the other methods used.

Also, if we are talking culturally significant center points, then I see your Calgary Tower and raise, for your consideration, Peter's Drive-Thru. A true staple, nay foundational piece, of Calgary's history. Also, the burgers finally taste how they used to (because most Calgarians have a Peters opinion)

thetookybird

Upper Mount Royal WOULD think they are the center point of Calgary...

thetookybird

I'm not going to say you are planning some kind of ritual. But I'm not ruling it out.

James Rule

You found Calgary's creamy middle.

Ross Vincent

I came here to ask this as well

Mina

This is 1000% why I'm a Patron, excellent geography content

Theresa

another potential metric is to find the center of gravity using population, assuming that every person has equal weight

ib_

Gotta say, I love a man who can appreciate his city.

Salami Sam, the Majestic Ram

"Inside Calgary" is knowing how great collapsible wagons truly are

Gazpacho Soup

Imagine if in 1000 years these Calgary geography videos are what people know about Dan and his other videos are only ever brought up as a fun fact. Like how Goethe considered his most important work to be on colour theory.

Alexander Schmidt

Can you show us a map of how far away each of these points are from each other?

Deko Puma

Did your work on Lake Minnewanka spawn an interest in geography and associated domains, or was it there already?

EricB

I just dropped everything to watch a 3 minute lesson on the geography of a place I never have and probably never will visit. I have absolutely no regrets.
