Production update 2021-08-29

Hello everyone!

Big turn of events this week. After the really poor experience from Monday/Tuesday, I took Wednesday off and went to play golf with my girlfriend. But also, we packed up our stuff and went to her dad's house. It used to be the family home, and it's got a nice basement we could set up in for a little while. I can't record here because the audio would sound too different from my home setup, but other than that, I can work just the same.

So, on Thursday, I got to work here. I initially ran into issues because I forgot I would need my N64 controller and USB adapter, and because I can't record an input file from a savestate and play it back on two different ROM versions. Took a chunk of my day out to figure out the kinks, but I finally got going.

On Friday and Saturday, I had two solid days of editing. Unfortunately, this morning, I ran into a pretty big mistake I made when analyzing Shoot to the Island in the Sky in 0xA. In short, I thought Pannenkoek was cloning goombas directly, but he was actually placing the HOLP first, then doing the hat in hand glitch and remote releasing goomba clones to put them into position. If you have no idea what those words are, don't worry, it'll all be explained in the video. But anyway, that was a major oversight that had me rearrange the order of paragraphs and rewrite about a page worth of stuff.

We originally wanted to move back in today, but we decided to prolong our stay here for another week. We're going back home for a few hours tonight to pick up some more clothes, stuff we forgot, etc. and also so I can record for a couple of hours, to get a proper recording of all these new changes (and hopefully progress further into the script).

So, with that being said, I now have 10½ minutes edited! Here's my patented Detailed Breakdown™:

As you can see, the recording % went down from 45% to about 39%. This is because with those new changes, I had to rewrite parts that were already recorded, and the overall length also went up from ~9400 to nearly 9700 words.

I did some pretty cool stuff this week! Here's a quick look.

A visualization of what happens to an object when it's being held. The held object is purely cosmetic, as the real object is actually invisible. Here, I made it transparent by recording two clips, one in the original game, and one in a hacked version where the original object stays visible, and overlaying the two.

A demonstration of the object slot Mario is holding as objects load and unload into it.

A demonstration of a spawner loading and unloading a group of objects based on Mario's distance away from it.

I'll spend the next week editing up to the point I will have managed to record tonight. Hopefully, I can reach 50%+ by Saturday! Once I get past the big cloning section, it should go quite quickly, as I'll mostly be using Pannenkoek's footage and talking about it. During the September 6-12 week, I'll have various activities planned (it's my girlfriend's birthday!) so it may be a little slower during that week. I'm still hoping to get this whole thing done within about 3 weeks from now. If I can keep a pace of a little over 10 minutes a week, that's totally feasible. Considering I got 9½ minutes done in 3½ days, in some of the denser stuff, I feel like I'm not being entirely unrealistic when I think that this could still be done by September 10 or so, but it's most likely to be ready by the 17th.

That's it for now! I hope you have a great week.
