Archive Sunday #14

We're back for another exciting episode of Archive Sunday. This Sunday the Boys head back to Europe. This time we start in the wonderful city of Berlin, which I would say is in my top 3 cities in Europe. I would definitely live there. It's a very hip culture with graffiti plastered all over the city, but not in an obnoxious way. It's also big on raving which we came to find out because our hotel was across the street from a club (not too far from the dildoking sign in the first picture). Seth and I were bunking together and had major jetlag so we woke up at like 2 or 3am. We were starving of course because we hadn't quite figured out the trick of eating at the appropriate times when traveling yet, so we made our way to a local pastry/coffee shop that opened at 5am. It was delicious and cheap. On our way back we walked by the club and could still hear the music blasting. They go hard in Berlin.

As a side note for the AS Chat Stream, let's not forget to bring up our nutty tour manager.

We eventually toured our way to Hamburg where we played this super tiny club and if I remember correctly I played terribly. I think I was doing a lot of harmonies at this point and couldn't hit a note because, A) I couldn't hear myself with the crap monitors and B) I can't sing.

But what I remember most about Hamburg is the Reeperbahn. Which is like the party district in Hamburg. Think Red Light District in Amsterdam but on speed. Sex clubs, drugs and drunk British men everywhere. On later trips we actually got to walk through it more extensively, but this trip we were able to pass through it momentarily and it was a trip.

SD: So we started off our first extensive Europe tour in Berlin. It was a long trip and by the time we made our way to the hostel, we could definitely feel a major sense of jet-lag kick in. I remember restlessly sitting in bed at 2 or 3am listening our rowdy British neighbors next door and opting for wandering aimlessly around the city because I was never getting back to sleep. A bunch of clubs nearby were pumping house music as wasted teenagers stumbled down the mostly empty streets. Eventually across the river we found a German bakery open at 5am and had one of the best egg sandwiches of my life.

I walked back to the hostel to wash my hair with the bar soap in the bathroom, and met up with Ethan and Will a bit later to show them our new favorite spot. Later that day we took the van across town to the venue called ACUD, but honestly that whole show was all a blur from being so tired.

The next day we woke up early to catch the ferry to Denmark. Once we got into Copenhagen we checked into the hotel and explored a little before we made out way to the Ideal Bar to sound check. I remember walking around the city a bunch amazed by the cobblestone streets and beautiful brightly colored buildings, but when I walked into a store and saw the prices in Krone I promptly turned around. That was before I had any cell service abroad so I couldn't check anything online like exchange rates.

The following day we made our back down to Germany to play a show in Hamburg. We stayed at an old hotel with shared bathrooms in the hallway and played the show at a bar/venue called Aalhaus. The small stage and packed room made for a great show, and afterwards we chatted with some locals outside that told us to check out the Reeperbahn and all it's glory. So later that night we strolled down the famous strip in their red-light district overwhelmed by the unrelenting party atmosphere and neon lights. I still wasn't able to sleep more than a few hours, so early the next morning I checked out another local recommendation. I followed the haggard, drunk partygoers still up from the night before to the Sunday fish market by the waterfront. Pretty much I just got yelled at by German fish vendors trying to persuade me to buy their fresh catch, but I also found a pastry for breakfast then made my way back.
