Peer Review w/ The Leftist Cooks

Introducing Peer Review, a Patreon exclusive series where I will be having super casual conversations with video essayists on YouTube, as a way of documenting this cool space that we have all built together!

Think of these as digital ethnographic interviews where we also talk shit :)

For the first edition, I've brought on the Leftist Cooks. They are incredible creators in the leftist video essay space who explore similar topics to mine, with amazing research, presentation, and vulnerability. Check them out here:

https://www.youtube.com/@TheLeftistCooks

In this chat we discuss video essays, academia, vulnerability, and more......!

Let me know if this is content you enjoy, and how you'd like to see it evolve in the future :)

I loved this! I found it super engaging to hear you all talk about how you engage with the creative process. As you were talking about parasociality, I had a couple of things I saw as potential pitfalls for creators (speaking as someone who has no idea what that’s like, just my best inference for hearing other people talk, and excluding the stuff you already alluded to like stalkers): 1) the audience feels they’re entitled to something from you, and you feel pressured by that sense of entitlement. I think folks can mitigate this by how they engage with their audience, and by not acting as though they can give their audience everything they might ever want/need. 2) the bond with the audience becomes so strong/intoxicating that you lose the ability to have private moments. I don’t know for sure because I don’t use any social media besides this and YouTube, but it doesn’t seem like any of you feel the need to document everything from your lives. I mean, Neil and Sarah are raising whole ass children I know basically nothing about, so that speaks to doing a good job with being able to maintain a sphere that the audience doesn’t infiltrate, and where you can have thoughts and experiences where concerns about what your audience don’t prevent you from being present. I can imagine that, if you can avoid those pitfalls, it could be pretty cool in the ways they describe. I personally find it really cool to engage with the other audience members in these communities.

Erm... So I'm not exactly sure what that is. But I just turned on Podcasting in the Patreon settings for audio posts. Not sure if that applies to videos. You wouldn't happen to know how to make this happen? I'm not sure.

Would it be possible for you to generate an RSS Patron podcast feed for Digital Dialects, so we can listen on-the-go?
