Final Fantasy VII NFTs? Square Enix didn't so much miss the point of that game as deliberately laugh in its face!
Weeeeell, sort of… Yeah, you could get a rare item in an MMO or even have whole leveled-up characters that you could either just give away or sell (on, say, EBay until they shut that sort of stuff down) with the idea of, hopefully for the purchaser's sake, transferring it to the purchaser, but… It wouldn’t mean anything outside of the game in question and we didn’t have unalterable “tokens” that were meant to ostensibly represent those items/characters that you used to transfer ownership. But I see what you’re trying to say (like, the CS:GO “skinonomy”) so…OK. 🧙♂️ Yoooou shaaaall paaaass! 😉

The irony is that we've had non-fungible tokens in games since, well, since the first MMOs. No crypto or pog-collecting required!
It literally just means a numbered token that represents a unique asset. Which is okay in a small community or great to represent your unique character but utterly pointless as something you buy or trade.

Hearing NFT-bros squeal in a desperate attempt to show that they are still somehow relevant is music to my ears. "Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!" 😈🦇
