Relitigating Steam Refunds (The Jimquisition)

Steam refunds have been a source of low-key controversy over the years since their institution, especially when it comes to smaller indie games.

One such game is Summer of '58, which kicked off the old refund debate yet again. Games on Steam can be returned within two hours of purchase, and Summer of '58 is about 90 minutes long.

You can guess what happened.  So once again let's dive into this issue, and see if we can't find something useful to say.

Why not have the refund policy be something that unlocks at a certain price point? So cheap titles are not refundable and expensive ones are? That wouldn’t be massively different from regular retail.

I had the game on my wishlist already and it got me to go play the game. Mainly because every time I've heard a similar complaint, it was from someone that put out a genuinely mediocre to bad game and couldn't figure out why people that didn't enjoy it returned it. And, this game seemed like it was pretty quality, so I bought it right away. On the one hand, the setting is extremely accurate to the location and era. This is someone that genuinely understood (or, did their research on) Soviet-era culture. And, the game manages tension extremely well. On the other hand, the game is extremely reliant on jump scares and there is just far too many of them as you get to the last part of the game. The game often struggles to communicate what it wants you to do, leaving you wandering from room to room trying to figure out what it wants. And the...uh...reveal in the room where you find the knife really detracts from the story. I won't be returning the game, since I was genuinely impressed with some aspects of it, but I'll be honest....I think people just didn't like the game and that's why they returned it.

Just FYI, Steph blocked OP, so I think this thing is over. Let's hope they seek help and will get better.

At this point I assume you not getting an answer is because we can all see that it will turn into a tirade about using words wrong… except the word was used correctly and it cannot and should not be redefined to mean the opposite of what it is currently understood to mean by everyone except apparently you. Please just stop.

The mad thing is that "pervert" is absolutely intended to have similar connotations to rapist and sex offender in the UK. You're trying to own the equivalent of the word "scumbag". If someone of a certain generation calls you a pervert in England they are basically calling you the worst thing they can think of without swearing or slandering you by actually calling you a rapist or sex-pest.

Been meaning to say this for awhile. You’re looking much better.

You seem not to care about the health or stress of others, based on your comments. Why do you think harrassment is a valid tactic for forcing others to respond to you?

Slimer was amazingly half-transparent.

Um Jammer Lammy! Leave it to LAMMY!

As a consumer, I'm happy for the refund policy. Made use of it a few times when I didn't like a game. Never used it to refund a short game as that is such a dick move. If you're gonna fuck over a small dev, just pirate the damn thing.

Simon Renshaw

Yeahhhh they could very easily implement an "estimated play time" note on the store page and determine the refund window from that. It'd be abused for sure, but i think ultimately it would shake out to be more fair

Tyler Kurth

I think Steam could quite easily allow the developer to mark their game for a "reduced 1h refund window, due to short game length". If the dev so chooses, the game gets another prominent marker, similar to "VR headset required" or "controller recommended". Abuse would be obvious in most cases...

So don't show concern for Steph's health or stress? I'm afraid I don't understand the intention. If you don't care about Steph's health or stress, why are you Subscribed to them on Patreon?

I love a good parasocial relationship as much as the next person, but this is why you have to remind yourself of the reality that parasocial =/= social. Also, I scrolled back to see what your initial comment was, and really? You're commenting every video because you didn't like their use of the word "pervert"? Let it go! Words have nuance!

Here is my stance. Valve had to be FORCED to have a Refund Policy and sadly if people start making it "hard", or worse yet, give them a reason to say, "Look the consumer doesn't WANT a Refund Policy anymore", Valve will jump on that like a Horn-Headed Bobby Kotick Jumps on Shitsmeared Bonuses. My problem with devs of shorter games is if they can't make money on one platform, they need to diversify. I'm Talking Patreon/Ko-Fi/[Insert Third Choice]/Etc OR release on Other Platforms like Itch(dot)io/GoG/Epi... Uh XGP?/Etc. The reality is that there is no such thing as one sizes fits all, if Valve weren't shitstain merchants then they would give a freshly squeezed fudgcicle, but they don't, which means the Dev needs to look for ways to make more $$$. now before peole who obviously never worked in the real world jump on me... This is how it works in the real world. If I want to get paid I need to go where the money is, not jump up and down and say, this isn't working I'm out. I support several game devs on Patreon with Short asf games, that is why they rely on Patreon supporters like me to make it work for them.

You have been spamming comments like this under every post for 2 weeks now. They won't answer. Just stop.

"Pubic Forum"! Bahaha, best descriptor for any comment section on the internet! This will forever be how I see any public forum from this point forward!

Steph, is something wrong? Are you too busy to respond to messages or is something going on with your health? It's got me worried...
