State Of Sterling 5/31/2019 (A Patreodcast)

Been a while since I gave you an update on all things Sterling, so here's another podcast of stuff and news! We talk about some current and upcoming improvements to The Jimquisition, some budget and audience stuff, I chat about Gotham for no reason, and lots of other stuff.

Thanks as always, seriously, for your continued and support and patronage and content sharing and all the good stuff you do. Especially now, as I work on some biiiiig Jimquisition episodes, I can only acknowledge I can't do it without ya!

Just about all your audio for the past few years has sounded just fine, with some of the podium bits having some reverb, but the only issues I've ever noticed on your podcast and gameplay-voiceover content is sounding a bit muffled on some videos. Maybe the reverb is your telltale heart?

Twit In A Hat

On that last point, absolutely. Some people who complain about the negativity can't even hide how they are trying to indirectly defend "AAA" bullshit and just want me to stop criticizing their favorite companies.

<i>"It's got only three knobs [....] but that's three knobs too many..."</i> - <b>Jim Sterling's Achilles heel (2019)</b> It sounds fine to me, but I confess I have extremely low standards when it comes to audio quality. I apologize for not having anything more helpful to offer. I've ruined my ears (and my brain) with black metal, scary power electronics and noise music. I was thinking about what you were saying in regards to syncing social media, fan-sharing and what have you. I feel a little guilty about this, because I don't use Twitter, Facebook, etc and I really don't want or need to. I think that's why I've tried to be a consistent Patreon funder, because I'm a veritable Diogenes in regards to networking. I want to support you in any way I can so I'm glad I can do so financially, but I'm an internet barbarian to whom social media is akin to far-flung heathenism. Also, did I hear you mention that a couple of people stopped funding you because they decided you were <i>[/said in as shrill and virginal a voice possible]</i> "an SJW"? So they only just noticed that you're a fairly liberal sort of chap, then? Imagine leading the life of somebody like that. Absolutely harrowing.

It's always sounded good, but I have a decent sound system with knobs on the front and all that-- is it possible that others were listening to you on shitty speakers and/or their phones? Cheers!

I'm not an audio expert, but it sounds OK to me. I will echo Chris' sentiment about the distortion on the laugh, however... If I may state: as a hobbyist game developer, I find it entertaining, humorous and surprisingly relaxing to watch your Old School Jimpressions, Squirty Plays/Direct to Video and Best of Steam Greenlight videos, to the point where I will often just have the playlist for them set to shuffle in the background as I work on my own project. Aside from frequently snickering at your ill-fated antics while playing the games, I also find them rather informative (often in the category of "what not to do") and instructional in a "what would I do to improve this game" sort of way. In one of your recent "Asking Sterling" podcasts(?) you stated how detrimental those types of vids are to your channel, so I just wanted to give some positive feedback to show that at least one person appreciates them (possibly to an unhealthy degree) as a valuable as well as an entertaining resource. Furthermore... In addition to the reasons you've stated, do you think that perhaps those requesting more positive videos on your channel are subconsciously asking for more leniency/amiableness towards "AAA" (or "AAA"-adjacent) games? I notice that the majority of your positivity leans towards less mainstream fare (recently Lapis x Labyrinth, A Plague Tale) which naysayers may not even be inclined to watch.

For the budget, would you consider creating a monthly transparency report like the one NCH Productions makes?

Wait I have done work for Rev! I want to caption it!

I've only ever been following you after I got back into more video games news stuff and got to your channel through that Angry Joe Worst Games List that had your bit on Slaughtering Grounds. But even with less time than others I think this year so far has been your strongest. Your work with the Jimquisitions, the Industry Bullshit and the Jimpressions have been superb. Personally watch all your stuff(besides Boglinwatch, sorry) and even all your positive Jimpressions besides the Yoshi one because I really did not care at all. Still keep up your amazing work, while I miss the old days of so many bad steam games, I rather have your current output, because it is so worth it. Even the Trailer Reactions, I would never watch them done by any other personality but yours.

If it sounds great, that's great! Thank you.

Sorry to hear about the revenue dip... If I could afford more, I would give more, but I work at a stinkin' coffee shot for minimum wage. Ugh.

Trevor Bond

I don't notice anything with the audio, I'm afraid. It sounds great to me. No popping. I've liked everything you've done of late.

Adrian Ceroni

Always Wonderful to hear whats going on. Sorry to hear about the dip in patreon revenue increased my pledge a bit hope it helps. Cheers.

Besides what you already noticed and what Chris pointed out the audio sounds great. As with everything it will take some time to get things keyed in but again already notice a much clearer sound. Thought the laugh sounded awesome by the way.

Morgan LeFay Dethen

I think the audio sounds really good. All the power of Jim seduction in audio form. People really wrote in exit surveys that they stopped their Patreon support because you're an SJW? Really shows how that term has lost all possible meaning in the world... I'm sorry that the positive Jimquisition videos don't do as well as the negative ones. Personally, I love 'em. I was really excited to check out your thoughts on A Plague Tale: Innocence, as it really interested me, and I'm super glad you loved it. I can't wait to play it whenever it goes on sale.

Matt

Thanks Jim

HA, I used to work for Rev, I am so sad a job like that never came up in the queue.

EmmiJade

Thank you for the heads up. I've found the clip light on the board, so I can be aware of that in future. I'll see what I can fiddle with to sort the bass out, too. Thanks! I suck at audio, ha.

Jim Sterling

Thanks Jim very cool.
