Where Did All The BioShocks Go?

In a new written article, I look at the current success of major single-player games like Sekiro and Resident Evil 2, examine the response from their publishers, and discuss the fact we haven't had a new BioShock game all generation.

Note: I gotta fix it so the new site plays well with Patreon. That poorly blown up JimQ logo whenever I link articles is horrible.

Indeed. I think the accepted term for the genre is "immersive sim," of which I would classify "shock games" (my term) as a subgenre.

For me as well. The most Deus-eXian game since the first Deus eX (which actually is my favorite game of all time).

Roguelike. Nothing wrong with that, but I personally think that having a carefully designed environment is one of the cornerstones of a Shock Game.

This generation's Bioshock game was "PREY." Seriously. It is my second-favorite game of all time.

Part 2 still gives me nightmares, and not in an interesting way. Also, trying to tie Bioshock 1 and Bioshock Infinite together like that made things less interesting, not more.

Isn't Void Bastards essentially the new Bioshock? As it is made by former Irrational games staff as Irrational itself closed in 2017 with it being restructured into Ghost Story Games.

I didn't mean quality-wise (as I agree, it was stellar), I meant plot-wise. As in, the ending of Burial at Sea Ep. 2 said everything that could ever be said in the world of BioShock, ended all plot threads and just closed this world so it never could be opened again. That's how I read it anyway.

Woot! Another article. 😃 And great points all around. More single-player games please. Games with a distinct end are wonderful. 🙂

How so? From what i remember the first episode was rather underwhelming but the second one was pretty stellar.

An excellent article, Jim. It's good to see some well written work once in a while from people who care. I agree it's been refreshing to see genuinely good games popping up at last, and frankly if it keeps up a while I may even buy a console again!

Good to get another column from you, Jim, especially right after talking about our cultural "pivot to video". I still enjoy your ranting, but I always appreciate your writing.

What about Close to the Sun?

Bioshock series is over. Second part of Burial at Sea completely and utterly ended the series i the way that nothing more could sensibly be added without it feeling like a cheap cash grab, and I'd prefer to never see any new BioShock ever again to seeing a cheap cash grab. Let the BioShock book stay closed.
