Beasts of the Obrecass Mountains

Hey Strugglers! 

Here are three unique mountainous beasts, with guest art by the talented Kiretop. These creatures offer a slice of the vibrant ecosystem within the Obrecass Mountains, a vast and rugged mountain range within the Strugglerverse. 

Blastland Macaque
Blastland Macaques are hardy monkeys that live within the volcanically active Blastland. They are completely at home amongst the geysers, earthquakes, avalanches, and eruptions that shake their habitat, and can be seen lounging in hot springs or fooling around on cliffsides without a care in the world.
       If attacked, a troop of blastland macaques will retreat to higher ground and pelt the attackers with rocks from above. These monkeys are smart enough to lead creatures into natural hazards such as hidden drops or pools of boiling water.

Hollow Horn
Hollow Horns are a species of mountainous goat that resemble an oversized markhor. True to their name, their massive spiraling horns are hollow and connected to the sinuses, allowing the hollow horn to emit a trumpeting bellow from within the horn itself. They do this when they feel threatened, to warn and rally others in their herd. This extremely loud sound is known to cause avalanches, and locals are careful to avoid spooking hollow horns for this reason.

Dropcat
Dropcats are mountain-dwelling ambush predators that leap from cliffs onto their prey. Like a cross between a flying squirrel and a tiger, the dropcat’s limbs are connected by large folds of skin that act as a parachute, allowing it to swiftly and silently descend from any height without harm to itself. Between its gliding pounce and camouflaged fur patterning, a dropcat is extremely hard to spot before it’s on top of you.
       Once prey has been subdued, dropcats carry it to higher ground and hide it in a cave or crevice for safe dining. If an ambush is unsuccessful, a dropcat doesn’t hesitate to flee just as quickly as it appeared.

Smarty Mumutsu
Smarty Mumutsu is an extraordinary monkey. Many years ago, she was an unremarkable macaque, living an ordinary life of frollicking and foraging with her troop. One day, she wandered into a camp of thieves and was captured. The thieves kept her as a pet, training her to help with their heists, scams, and pickpocketing.
       On one particular heist, Mumutsu unwittingly attuned herself to a headband of intellect and her intelligence was awoken. She returned to her guild with a newfound understanding of the world, and began to rapidly learn and grow beyond the bounds of her former ability. Over time, she learned language, studied the arcane arts, and became a master thief. After seizing control of her guild’s operation, she left to travel the world and expand her experience.
       Eventually, as her intellect burgeoned, she began to yearn for the blissful ignorance of her youth amongst the macaque troop. She packed her gear and traveled back to the cliffs and hot springs of her mountainous origin. Upon arriving, her troop ecstatically welcomed her back into the family. For a time it was as if nothing had ever changed.
       She was a new monkey however, and had outgrown the simple pleasures of her troop. Facing that bitter truth, she decided to venture deeper into the mountains. She resides there now in hermitage, studying her vast library of stolen tomes, and seeking a deeper understanding of magic and the multiverse. Maybe one day, after she has exhausted her thirst for knowledge, she will doff her headband of intellect and return to the wild...
       Smarty Mumutsu can be encountered in a mountain cave near the hot springs of the Blastland. Her home is packed with bookshelves, and it is lavishly decorated from her life of crime. The cave is heavily laden with traps. Multiple hidden escape routes provide points of egress in case of emergency. If pressed, Mumutsu will flee and summon thieves from her guild to aid her in ambushing the players at a later date. Smarty Mumutsu will happily trade knowledge and goods with those who treat her kindly.
