There’s definitely something pathological about Araragi’s savior complex, which absolutely exists. It’s clearly not empathy-driven, or he would have considered how he might handle the reverse situation. If he was the sole cause of a situation in which either he lost an arm, or his friend died, he would choose to lose the arm without hesitation. He wouldn’t even accept the risk of somebody else being harmed. He doesn’t have a strong moral framework, or he would be able to evaluate situations beyond his position in them. He only has a compulsive desire to be actively involved in “helping”. This desire is likely no less important to him than actually achieving a positive outcome, not that he realizes it. Perhaps the most forgiving name for this would be a naive righteousness.
