There is not much to understand if its not shown right. It sounds like you are filling in the gaps the story doesn't really tell. We barely see any insights, he barely mentions his conflict between Ryo and Haruto and we never know his thoughts when he turns down a girl (and with Sayo, he absolutely rizzed her up - for what?). Of course he shouldn't accept a girl just because she wants him. But he should have a defined personality, show what his motivations are. The show barely shows his motivation for anything. So of course, in consequence, he seems very flat. Except when you are filling in the gaps and coming up with reasons.

He isn't exactly a self insert (although he is bland), or is this like they want the guys watching saying "ah he is so cold. I would apreciate her love and make her happy. I am so much better". Or is this a weird fetish show for people who like seeing girls getting their hearts broken? I mean, mostly Ryo is just there. But sometimes he is rizzing a lot, like when he got Sayo the gift. And then he just goes on with his day casually until he leaves. Sayo even wasted a whole training ark for nothing (seemingly). Where does this go?
