THE NEXT STEP

So much of what is happening in our world is new and uncertain, or at least that’s how we perceive it. But when you think about it logically, every day is new and uncertain. The human mind just seems to fall into patterns that allow us to ignore much of the change. We try to make sense of the chaos, take the path of least resistance, and trudge forward with our unchallenging lives.

But challenge is good. I for one prefer being challenged. I like being shaken out of my safe, protective shell and have my views challenged, if only to have the opportunity to reevaluate, defend, and reinforce my long held beliefs. It’s never a bad thing to question your life, discuss change, or even seek it out.

I know many of my fellow Americans live in constant fear. Fear of food insecurity, fear of the rent coming due, fear of illness with a lack of medical coverage. But we also fear the unknown, the other, the different. It’s human nature. But just because this fear is wired into our brains does not mean we should give into it the way an animal does. We are self-aware, conscious beings. We used our brain to advance our society to the place it is and we can use our brains to evolve past these other challenges. We can do it.

Thank you for always reading my rants. I write them mostly for me, rather than for you. Please just know I care about my fellow Americans, no matter what race or creed you ascribe to, whether you live in the Bible Belt or the Castro District. Whether bleeding red or die-hard blue, we are one nation. We sink or swim together.
