The Great Rania, pt. 4

THE GREAT RANIA

Finding models in Greece was incredibly difficult. Europe in general is surprisingly complicated when searching for models. They all want to be paid vast amounts of money, expect full crews of make-up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe designers, organized or rented sets, etc. They don’t have the free-spirited concept of modeling that we do here in the states, and thus you can see the dilemma for a photographer like me that works simply and quickly in a more guerilla-styled theme.

So after months of planning, I had only found one model in the capitol or Greece, the bustling and filthy, fun city of Athens. Oddly, on our second day there I was contact by a longtime supporter and fan of my work, a great photographer named Theo. He offered to take my girlfriend and I to a ate 10:30pm dinner, and who were we to say no to that. Theo turned out to be a great guy, and though at times the language barrier stood in our way, we had a wonderful time. I shared my frustration about the lack of models in the area, and though it was a long shot, he suggested a professional model he followed online: Rania. She was experienced, professional, and gorgeous, and I saw great potential in her.

Sadly, he told me the all this late on the night before our last day in town. So I assumed nothing could ever happen, resigning to the idea of not even messaging Rania. So as my girlfriend and I settled back in our AirBNB for the night, her laying on the sofa trying to make sense of Greek TV, I laid in bed scouring social media. Deciding to give in to curiosity, I messaged Rania as a Hail Mary pass, and almost immediately received a message back from her saying she was very interested in working with me. It was almost 1AM.

I was obviously stunned, and within moments of her response, we had arranged to shoot later that afternoon. I sent her ideas and rough concepts, all of which she loved. It was all so magical and easy. She even asked if she could bring her close friend, Marina, who also had modeled for years. Well duh. “Of Course you can!” 

When they showed up the next day, they could not have been more fun. Marina was quiet and shy and sweet, while Rania was a loud, rambunctious, life of the party. Opinionated and wild, she was comfortable shedding her clothes and inhibitions easily, and both my girlfriend and I marveled at our luck!
