LILLIAS IN RED
I once again had the distinct pleasure of working with Lillias Right this month at the Madonna Inn, which is her favorite place to shoot on the Central Coast. It’s a timeless, classically designed hotel designed to echo the Victorian era, while also sporting many themes and design elements from the time it was created in the 1960s.
This time she reserved a bright red room with red velvet wallpaper. All the furniture in the room was made of red velvet, and even the wooden beams overhead were crimson and solid. We shot several set-ups in that room, squeezing in three different sets in less than 45 minutes, which was almost a record for me. With famous models Mika Lovely and Carolyn Jean in the room with us, I continually became distracted chatting with all three of them while first one and then all of them were in various forms of undress.
The set presented today was simply in the living room area of the large room, which sported a beautiful red chair that we were all in love with. Lillias gave me the option of several pieces of clothing for her to wear, and of course I picked out the sheerest thing possible, a see-through dress that was loose and flowy on her voluptuous frame.
I positioned her near the chair and shot away, knowing it wouldn’t take much to capture good images with all these elements present. I experimented with my Lensbaby for a bit, adding some funky blur effects, but Lillias, in her strong way, said she didn’t like them as much as I did, so I opted for my mirror effect using my f1.4 50mm.
I knew we were both on a time crunch, so I just clicked away as fast as possible, relying on my instincts and gut, trusting that at this point I would capture quality images without exerting too much stress and effort on myself. Thankfully, though she can be a bit of a tough sell from time to time, she really liked what we ended up with.
After plenty of standing images, I had her sit down in the red, fluffy chair and we continued to shoot several more until it was time to move on. As conversations and nudity fulled the room, I stopped for half a second to ponder what my quieter, more shy and reflective self would think of the life I currently live.
