HIPPIE KID

I met McKenzie two years ago when she had just turned 18. She had just started crocheting her own bikinis and was hoping to get some photos of them, so I thought I’d trade her photo shoots for actual bikinis, and she was all for it. There were very long periods of time where I wouldn’t hear from her, then I’d get urgent messages saying she’d want to work together again, which were followed again by long periods of her not responding.

Fast forward two years, and now she’s 20, still dating the same loser guy she’s been involved with since being a young teen, and still insecure and hemming and hawing over what to do and not do in her life. And she’s still making her bikinis. She had messaged me before I left on my Europe trip in July and said to get in touch when I was back, and the day before I left Europe I told her we needed to hang out.

I’ve learned about myself that when I return from long trips, I like to keep busy, even when jetlagged. That first morning after I returned, I was groggy and felt drunk from lack of sleep, but I still arranged to meet up with McKenzie at her place in Arroyo Grande. Why am I like this? Who knows!

With no idea or location, she and I headed to a secret garden she runs, an out-of-the-way place near downtown AG that she can grow things and hide away from the world. Being a hippie kid by nature, she has an intense green thumb and fits in well in such natural environments. She brought a variety of outfits and she took turns changing and swapping out what she’d wear while I sweat profusely in the hot summer sun and tried to stay awake.

It was nice to catch up with her, she’s a good kid and means well, she’s just a bit directionless and is stuck in the small-town mentality that grips many people in my hometown area.

An hour went by quick, and once I knew we had captured quite a lot of images, I called it quits. I knew they weren’t my best images, but I also knew it was good for me to get out and be forced to do something. So please feel free to judge this work as it is, and please let me know what you think!
