Erika in the Sand, Pt. 4

I've only really used a 40 or 50mm lens when shooting models the last few years, preferring to challenge myself with the lighting and angles and situations over using an array of equipment. On this day I casually decided to throw a 24-200mm zoom lens I had found collecting dust on the back of a shelf, not thinking I'd have much use for it. However, since Erika trusted me and we had no real ideas in mind, I put that hulking lens on first and was surprised with the result.

I taught myself photography with a 28-105mm lens over a 15 years ago, and for years never touched another lens. Using the large 24mm zoom was similar to that, and while shooting with it I felt like I was returning to my childhood home after years of being on the road.

I missed being able to get some real distortion in the background, and how it forced me to get much closer in proximity to the model. I always prefer the kind of intimate conversations you can only have one-on-one, and the closer the lens is to the model, I find, the more the model feels as though she's engaged and connected to the camera. At least, that's my experience.
