American History X

Comments

wish they woulda included a scene of the principal reading it out at a funeral service so we could see Derek hearing the message and not being consumed by hate. i loved the movie but the ending seemed incomplete

auqie

True

Theo Sebuliba

History repeats itself...

David

wow... that was an amazing film.

Trevor Wright

The dad scene at the end is basically the same argument you hear now about dei, that whole conversation is basically the same if you replace affirmative action with dei now, crazy isn’t it

Theo Sebuliba

The voters don’t know their taste at all

Alex

that’s why i want them to keep choosing bc they have better taste than the patreon members 😂

Alex

same

Alex

😭funny bc it’s been in the polls a lot and lost

Alex

the ocean in the beginning was at night time and very dark and at the ending it’s sunset or sunrise and bright

Alex

A quick suggestion, I think you guys should record with the original subtitles. Added subtitles sometimes are not accurate, randomly translates into different languages, takes too much of screen and in shows with a foreign language added subtitles doesn't work and we dont see the original subtitles you guys see like kimiko's lines in the boys series. I think it would be sooo much better to watch with the original subtitles that you guys are seeing.

I never thought about the ocean question til now. But after Vince asked, I think coupled with the little brothers message about not being angry all the time and the scene of them as toddlers at the beach. It’s about focusing on things you love instead of the things you hate. Y’all brought up the surfboard in the back of their room. Covered up. Overshadowed by the nazi imagery. Imagine if they focused on that surfboard instead in their lives. Innocence doesn’t need to be lost by hate.

jblakk

Alpha dog from 2006 is a great movie too, based on a true story as well

Who

I didn’t realize that was the kid from terminator 2!!!!!!

Who

We got to vote that in the poll next time

Who

that would've have been a terrible ending if that were the case

Frankie

love this movie, i believe yalls analysis was great, id also like to add this movie shows that even though racist people exist, and have done / do terrible things like Derrek did, they can change. People get manipulated into false realities. Then just get led into ignorance.

Frankie

I watched this for the first time years ago and loved it so much but said I would never watch it again because it is so heavy. Rewatched it again with you guys and still the same raw, hard hitting masterpiece it was. Cry so hard at the end.

amy 🤍

This movie is even more relevant now. It seems like most of his talking points in this movie have been repeated by the politicians now. Scary

eboarder4000

If you like this one, “Skin” (2018) is another great watch.

Alexandria

Yes lets go I've been requesting this for months

In "American History X," the ocean symbolizes a sense of escape and potential for redemption for the main character, Derek Vinyard, representing a chance to leave behind his violent past and racist beliefs and start anew, much like how the vastness of the ocean can signify a clean slate or a new beginning. Explanation: Washing away the past: When Derek is finally confronting his hateful ideology, he is often shown near the ocean, where the waves metaphorically symbolize the cleansing of his past actions and the potential to become a better person. Uncharted territory: The vastness of the ocean also represents the unknown, signifying the challenges and uncertainties of Derek's path towards self-improvement and a life free from bigotry. Final scene: The movie's closing scene features Derek looking out at the ocean, which can be interpreted as a hopeful sign that he is finally ready to embrace a new chapter in his life, leaving behind the toxic beliefs that once defined him.

Same here

I almost didn't want to watch this because I knew it was going to be heavy, but I'm glad I did. Very heavy and sadly still relevant.

PokeTheBear

We also watched it in high school in Norway, and the teacher did the same thing. Paused it and warned us. After the movie we had long talks and discussions about messages in the movie and how we interpreted them. It was the best and most important film to watch at the time, and it's just as relevant to this day. It's a movie that sticks with you for a long time. That's for sure.

Slasher

freedom writers next!!!

alex

I have seen this maybe over a dozen times, and it is still disturbingly beautiful. Also, I cried every time at the end.

Mishari budastour

Also idk of anyone mentioned this but the original ending had Derek go home and shave his head which implied he was going back to his old ways. But edward norton refused and made them change it. He thought it would be a horrible message and make the movie pointless.

Kevin Matthew

Yes he has done great job

Josip Buretić

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” This quote in the conclusion to Danny’s paper is from the final stanza to Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address. Perfectly sums up what Derek learned in prison. Especially today, this movie stays incredibly relevant and important to American culture. In the scene when the Vinyard family are discoursing about Rodney King, you could see the same arguments in the summer of 2020 on any Internet forum or social media post after the death of George Floyd. Loved your reaction!

💯

Kamath72

Superb reaction. So pleased you watched this masterpiece. Been hoping to get a classic like this on the channel for a while now.

SavageDiplomat

what a great surprise! can't wait to watch it again with you guys

Gustavo Wellez

Please watch ''Good Will Hunting'' I know yous will love it

Connor Pitman

Wow, didn’t expect this, remember seeing this as a kid. Good movie overall

Eg

So glad y’all are picking on y’all’s own. Had this been in a poll it prob would have lost to happy feet or something 😭😭

Z

Wow amazing choice guys

ShanB

You guys need to keep choosing! It's always a banger! This film is required watching for everyone!

Mark

Omg I haven't seen this film in ages, it's a trauma for me but seeing it again with you will be more enjoyable. I've only just started the video, and I really like your comment about diversifying the content. So let me recommend a film from my own country: France. I recommend Intouchables (2011)! Great movie about friendship beyond differences. It was a hit in France, and allow one of the main actor - Omar Sy - to get a César (like the Oscars in France).

Justine Cbn 📽

My favorite movie of all time🔥

David Lynskey

honestly I feel like it should be shown at some point, Its a pretty important movie, definitely a tough watch though.

Stray

It's wild that Derek was too racist for the Aryan Brotherhood in jail

Kwisatz Haderach

So glad you picked this movie to watch its been one of my choices. Incredible movie and hard to watch but it still is accurate with all the hate going on today. 25th Hour is another incredible Edward Norton movie that not many people react to.

Kevin Matthew

The K word that Derek uses on Murray during the dinner scene is a slur against Jewish people

Kwisatz Haderach

Yeah it’s crazy to see Ethan suplee now compared to back then, like 2 different people

Theo Sebuliba

The big guy in this had a major weight loss dudes a beast now Also when this came out people were thirsty for Norton saying he was sexy in the opening scene 😳 wild

Rolo 19

We watched it in high school too( It was actually Middle School 9th grade). But in Norway. It was completely acceptable. But we also have a bad history with Nazis, so shedding light on their evil doing is a good thing. Teacher paused the film before the headbash and gave students a warning that something extremely brutal is about too happen, so if anyone wanna leave class, they can.

adventure time

About 16-17. Great movies. I think we were old enough for law abiding citizen. But American history x? In school is crazy

Tripp

This is great movie Aldo I hope you will enjoy it.

Josip Buretić

Both great movies. How old were you back than?

Josip Buretić

High school.

Tripp

Was this in middle school or high school

Theo Sebuliba

Yea. That teacher was crazy. I remember her. Because she also let us watch law abiding citizen. Then she was gone. Should not have watched it then.

Tripp

Oh really, that’s crazy, I only saw this movie later on when I was an adult, I never watched this in class

Theo Sebuliba

Can you believe we actually watched this movie in high school. In study hall. Pretty sure that teacher got in trouble. This movie is crazy, disturbing, but real. Great pick!

Tripp

I love that yall are picking movies to watch now. I feel like that’s less stressful than doing polls for every movie you watch. Also a lot less negativity. You can’t please everybody. I don’t like the pick for today but It’s not that serious. I’m gonna enjoy the ride either way. Doesn’t matter what yall watch.

Biglo

Fun Fact: The scene in prison when Edward Norton and Guy Torrey were talking about the lakers and the Celtics that was actually improvised by them 😢

Chase

It was crazy to see the dad from boy meets world or Ethan suplee from this aswell

Theo Sebuliba

I’ve never seen this film before. Who better to watch it for the first time than with the Perfect Mix? I look forward to whatever else you got on the list. We’re in for the long haul.

Aldo Gonzales

It was hard for me to see John Conor as a racist when this first camed out lol

Antonio

Another amazing pick, thank you!!

imperial

Great choice, this movie is rough to watch man, glad you picked it

Theo Sebuliba

You guys really choose better than the poll 😭😭

Kwisatz Haderach

Wow haven’t seen this in a min
