[YT Edit] Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for KKBB which will premiere shortly! We swapped places with Christmas Vacation, so that one will be tomorrow!

[YT Edit] Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Comments

I think part of it is the movie isn't available for free on any streaming platforms I could find. If it is, please let me know where I can find it!

Maisie

This is one of my favorite comedies. It's so well done.

John Neiberger

I wouldn't say it faded from peoples' minds so much as it never entered. It's one of those movies that is well or highly regarded by those who have seen them, but which somehow never broke through. As another (albeit different) example of the genre: The 13th Warrior (1999). And for another example of a movie's title working against it, I submit the Coen Brothers' zany screwball comedy Intolerable Cruelty (2003). You would not be mistaken in guessing I'd be happy to see a reaction to both movies. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

It's great, very funny and a good detective story. Very much in line with Shane Black's other mismatched "buddy cop" movies: Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and The Nice Guys. Just funny characters who start off disliking each other but who come together to solve a mystery. If you liked those other movies, you'll probably like this as well. The title is pretty bad though, no argument there.

Stranger2Reality

It did well with critics from the get, but a lot of people still haven't seen it. Interesting how close the YT numbers on the channel correlate with box office numbers.

Chris Thom

Strangely enough, I've never seen the film, which means I'm going to have to wait to watch it with Wifey in the next few days before I watch Cassie's reaction (hence no comments from me). I like Val Kilmer and Robert Downey jr, but I never had the urge to watch this one and didn't even know RDJ was in it till recently. Maybe it's the title, which if you think about it, is a bit childish and silly. I'm throwing Hail Marys here.

Clarence Newman

I was also surprised it didn't get more comments on here. Weird how so many people here voted for it and then don't seem to have shown up for it. It's a great movie, but like you said, maybe it's just not one many people have seen or think about.

Stranger2Reality

So far KKBB is off to a very slow start on YT. KKBB is another of those movies that seem to fade from people's minds, and it never seems to be shown on basic cable channels. Cassie's has a number of movies in the last few months that have lower view counts than I would have expected.

Joe

Top Secret and Real Genius seem good "Pick-a-flick" choices, probably the only way they get watched on the channel unless we get a Val Kilmer poll.

Joe

I think his talent for comedy was very evident in Tombstone. Top Secret is worth a watch.

Clarence Newman

Good point.

Clay F

Thunderheart isn't exactly a comedy though. Val Kilmer is in tons of fantastic movies and he's great in them, but for people who are surprised at how funny he is, they should watch Top Secret and Real Genius. Those were his first two movies and both are hilarious. Top Secret is by the same guys who did Airplane and The Naked Gun, and as much as I love those movies, Top Secret is probably funnier than either of them (it's why it is Weird Al's favorite movie). Real Genius is more of a "typical" comedy, but is still hilarious and has its surreal elements to it. But you really can't go wrong just watching a bunch of Val Kilmer movies. A couple of my favorite underrated movies of his are The Salton Sea and Felon. A more mainstream movie of his that Cassie would probably like (if she hasn't seen it already) is The Saint. It's like James Bond meets romance.

Stranger2Reality

I also like Val Kilmer as the lead in THUNDERHEART (1992) [RT=90%]. Has redemption, which Cassie tends to want.

Clay F

I second this. Real Genius is an underrated gem. I watched it again recently for review/reaction and it has aged quite well (unlike a few 80's comedies I might mention).

Michael Siegel

@Happy - Rethink King Ralph. (spoiler) The whole monarchy is killed off and an American takes over Great Britain, what more could you want.

Mike Lemon

King Ralph. It doesn't seem to have earned many accolades, but John Goodman and Peter O'Toole must be good for some laughs. I've never seen it. As a good republican, I preferred to see Goodman as Acting President. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Cassie, in response to your comment "who knew Val Kilmer was so funny" you really, really need to watch his first two movies, Top Secret and Real Genius, as they're two absolutely hilarious films. I guarantee you'll love those movies.

Stranger2Reality

One of the first ten or so movies I ever remember seeing. That and King John? Or something like that? The dad from Roseanne finds out he's in line to be king?

Chris Thom

I remember being halfway through the Ally McBeal series and starting to struggle with it when RDJ turned up. Not only did he give Calista Flockhart an interesting love interest to play off, his character and personality on its own elevated every episode. I only knew him from "Chaplin" to that point and I'd never even watched that, so it was quite a discovery for me.

Clarence Newman

Shane Black has written a couple movies like this one, with The Nice Guys being the other one he directed, as well as The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis and Daman Wayans, which Black wrote and Tony Scott directed. Of course Black's first foray into these mismatched characters teaming up for a detective case was Lethal Weapon. Cassie has already seen Lethal Weapon and this, so she'd probably also appreciate The Last Boy Scout and The Nice Guys.

Stranger2Reality

Following Uncle Buck and RDJ in this movie, here's a semi-recommendation for Back to School (1986). (Y'all can consider it a consolation prize for (not getting) DS9. :-P )

Happy Hanukkah

As I commented in the Extra Butter chat in the Community tab, I am glad that Robert Downey, Jr. pulled out of his troubles 20 years ago. I like him as an actor. A talented guy.

Clay F

By the way, RDJ is singing the song in the credits.

Trevor Rotan

Like Black's previously directed film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), The Nice Guys takes inspiration from Brett Halliday, namely his novel Blue Murder. Black initially wrote a version of the script along with Anthony Bagarozzi in 2001 which established the characters but otherwise was vastly different.

Devilfrog

Glad you loved it. One of my favorites. I THINK I was the one to first recommend this to you.

Matt Rose

Reminds me quite a bit of the nice guys with Russell, Crowe, and that other guy

Thomas Thompson

"Who taught you math?!"
