[YT Edit] Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

Comments

This is one of those classics I hadn't seen. I liked it but it wasn't quite at the level of other classics of that period, like Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind or It's a Wonderful Life. Seeing Smith going around punching people was, well, kinda odd, to say the least. I would have left that on the cutting room floor. The sincerity of Stewart's performance won me over and his simple powerful words. I only wish people like Pelosi or Schumer or Nadler or Biden or Obama sat down and watched this movie and learned from it. They are the Paines and Taylors of the world today, doing everything they can to make themselves filthy rich by preying on the misery of the people.

Yes, Meet John Doe has Cooper and especially Barbara Stanwyck at their best. I think it is a better film than this one.

"You Can't Take It With You" has the added attraction of including Jimmy Stewart; and in a very different role from Mr. Potter, the one and only Lionel Barrymore.

Maria Torres

Not to mention You Can’t Take it With You and Shane!

Marja

I do too!

Maria Torres

Yes, I love that, like Orson Welles and John Ford, he often used the same character actors!

Marja

A bunch of the Capra crew.

After all, one of the sweetest instants is when Saunders obeys Mrs. Smith and calls her "Ma".

Maria Torres

And no one sued you back then for a punch in the nose.

Ditto

Larry Darrell

Oh that's right. Totally forgot about Frankenstein. I think that's one of the few vids on the channel I haven't seen yet. Thank you.

Chris Thom

If you're looking for more Capra, Cassie, check out MEET JOHN DOE β€”Β a great Christmas movie, and one that shows the often stoic Gary Cooper could actually act up a storm when the role called for it.

Oooh, there's a challenge. If 1931 is the farthest back she's taken her time machine, we need some 20's stuff. And The Time Machine itself, of course! That's only from 1960, but she'll pass that on her way back to the 20s.

Clarence Newman

That scene between them when they're formulating the bill and finding out about each other is so lovely, funny and gentle.

Maria Torres

Harvey is a wonderful work.

Maria Torres

And Jefferson Smith hitting the reporters was because people used to take it personally when you besmirched their honor and lied about them.

William Brownlee

In the proposed ending Cassie would have gotten her dream if a happy ending showing Jeff Smith and Saunders together back home.

William Brownlee

Cassie, I am so happy you watched this movie. It might not get as many views, but just think if a fraction of your 400,000 followers see this story. We get so depressed because it seems all our leaders are just corrupt people out for themselves. But like in this movie there are always a few good people who we need to find and help. Human nature hasn't changed in the 80+ years since this movie was made and yes, you may have to adjust to the acting style or speech patterns, but the story is worth it. And I love Saunders. I would marry her if it was possible. She probably came as just as big an optimist as Jefferson Smith, but she had seen things that made her lose faith. She thought at first that Jefferson was a fake, until she saw he was real. She had to come out of that dark tunnel.

William Brownlee

Harvey is a quiet, small story that could never be made in that kind of style today. I hope a lot of people hear about it and give it a chance.

William Brownlee

Cassie was happy that 11 "Angry Men" rejected the bigotry of the 12th one! But Director Sidney Lumet confessed that that scene was "sentimental"-- the word that always got thrown at Frank Capra.

David Fuchs

please watch The Majestic

zynjams

A Jimmy, Stuart poll spirit of St. Louis, HarveyBandolero, etc.

Doc Larry

Wizard of Oz is two months older, Robin Hood was 1938, It Happened On Night was 1934, but Frankenstein is the oldest she reacted to at 1931.

Mike Lemon

I often agree with him: I think, here, for example, we don't really need to see what happens with Clarissa and Jeff: we know. The important thing between them was the softening of Clarissa and the help she gave to Jeff to face the evil and fight it intelligently. The biggest personal thing in the story was the downfall of Senator Paine due to the relationship and final confrontation between him and Jeff - that name is apt, and Rains is able to let us see the emotional pain this whole miserable plot is causing him. We can definitely imagine the destruction of Taylor in that town: no family is going to put up with what was done to their children, and now he's done it to whole groups of families. We can bet that Taylor overplayed his hand and assurance here. Especially now that Paine is broken enough now to speak against him. If Taylor may, if he's lucky, escape being torn to pieces. We don't need to see all that. We know, and Capra knows we do. So he closes the curtain on the person who, really, has done the most growing and changing: Clarissa Saunders.

Maria Torres

Dang 1939. A real throwback. Pretty sure that's the oldest film she's done so far. Or maybe it was the Clark Gable runaway bride one.

Chris Thom

This is the rare time that I will write something: Cassie objected, "Just bc Smith is pure doesn't mean he's naive & childish." Capra's opponents said that the ending (Payne's repentance) is naive. I always wrote abt the inspiration Cassie got from "Wonderful Life." And her discovering that it may be naive-- when she saw the naive Black & White of Pleasantville.

David Fuchs

Pages-yes, they had them in the House & the Senate.

Carol Rocha

Enjoy the Classics, in the 70s there were cartoon information adds how a Bill was passed. Canadian but watched alot of American TV.πŸ™‚ Was a bunch cartoons public service adds on .

Tim C

Claude Rains, who played Mr. Paine, was one of the very great actors of this era. Here, better than I can explain, is a TCM portrait of him narrated by Richard Chamberlain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59OZfYU-CY4

Maria Torres

Your Mr. Smith goes to Washington epilogue was just perfect.

Ria Grix

I forgot to add that Mrs. Smith is Beulah Bondi, who was Ma Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life" and who played Jimmy Stewart's mom a few more times.

Maria Torres

Movies back then always seemed to have clunky endings that just just screech to an end. I like your epilogue additions..😁

Wil Olandria

The lighting on Jimmy’s face when he’s confronting Claude Rains at the end there, is so very beautiful. One of my fave movies. And there were several co-stars who were also in Wonderful Life: Mr. Gower, Uncle Billy and Ma Bailey, plus a few others.

Marja

That's Thomas Mitchell trying to get his hair combed for the talented and funny Jean Arthur. Thomas Mitchell was Uncle Billy in that "It's A Wonderful Life". If you watch "Gone With the Wind", you'll see him as Scarlett's dad. This movie is chockful of those wonderful supporting actors who made these classic movies true classics. Jean Arthur is a favorite actress of mine: sharp, funny, sensitive, with a nice range, weakened by a nervousness which resulted in a lack of self esteem. She should be better known. You can see her at her funny best in "The More the Merrier".

Maria Torres

Or just really miserable

Dan M

You'd have to be heartless to not love Jimmy stewart..

Jeff Rogers

Or just anyone in general.

Stick Figure Studios

He often did that. Once the central conflict/drama was resolved, I guess he felt that nothing more need be said (see also IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT). Anything else is a victory lap.

Stick Figure Studios

Our first PIB notification since Monday. Why does it seem like an eternity? So happy to hear that β€œping”.

Dan M

A great movie. The only thing many people comment on is the abrupt ending. But I heard that Capra didn't think adding another section of the movie to cover what happened after was worth it.

William Brownlee

This movie should be required watching for anyone who wants to go into politics.
