FOREIGN MOVIE POLL 1 of 2

Thank you all so much for all your suggestions last week about options for a foreign movie poll! There was so many we are going to do TWO polls, then the top 2 of each to go on to a final champions poll! I think these are going to be fun!

Go vote on the other poll here!

Comments

I would like to thank everyone who voted for Tampopo. I pulled it out of a hat recommending it. I didn't think a lot of people would know the movie. Of course "it can't win" but you know... it's nice to see it on the list 🙂

Em McG

Godzilla Minus One is stunning. A movie to make you fall to your knees clawing at the air... at the majesty of it all. The leviathan come to life. Kurosawa is good too of course.

Mannygogou

Kung Fu Hustle is the follow up from the director who had a big hit with Shaolin Soccer which was the more comedic of the two titles. I'll mention an anecdote - my sister who is a nurse works night shift and we had a family get-together at her house - but she has to sneak away to get some sleep... Then a few minutes later we hear a lot of crazed laughter coming out of her room - you see I had bought her a copy of Kung Fu Hustle and she put it on while in bed. The family runs over to see what the commotion was about, "sister you're supposed to be sleeping!" we chide her, LoL. Yes film maker Stephen Chow is a fan of cinema. At the time of its release, Shaolin Soccer became the most successful film in the history of Hong Kong cinema... before it was topped by his follow up Kung Fu Hustle. It's best to watch both then for sure the viewer understands that Kung Fu Hustle is a comedy. It's set in the 1940s. It's a comedy set inside mayhem.

Mannygogou

Foreign Film category is a tough vote since I assume that many haven't seen most of the titles. I've heard of 7 out of the 10 titles and only seen 4 of them. Gojira, Ran, Tampopo and Kung-Fu Hustle. I'm going back in time to check out the other poll hahaha...

Mannygogou

@ jdj830 what a terrible projection based off of nothing not to mention a crappy attitude to have towards fellow Patreons here.

Paul Browne

I just watched G-1 and it totally lived up to the hype. Fantastic watch, and made on a comparative shoestring I walked out of the laest Hollywood offering 20 minutes into it....made for 10x times the budget.

Paul Browne

I doubt it. They're campy and fun movies, but I'd rather not have a reaction slot go to waste on one of those movies, when there are much better choices.

Aaron Mann

Godzilla came in 2nd, there is one thing I have to say to that https://youtu.be/j2iUQ6sta_c?si=Ined-Oqe_Xxe0hWL (The Godzilla Theme From King of The Monsters)

Zachary K.

Old, new, somewhere in-between, I don't discriminate. There's just movies I like and movies I don't like.

Richard Maurer

probably not.

Richard Maurer

It would be interesting to hear her take on the American version after watching the original, but there's so many other things that would be better worth her time.

Lawrance Bernabo

I wonder if Cassie and Carly are going to watch the really campy Godzilla/Kaiju movies from the 60s and 70s? Like the ones from MST3k?

Kyle Prince

No, but Someone told me about it and I thought it was interesting. Why was it banned in Spain for 20 30 years?

Kyle Prince

No one? Speak for yourself; it's a great film. BTW, Franco wasn't a movie critic.

S M

If Train to Busan doesn't win...I mean i know its winning but if it doesn't win. There's nothing i can do about it but it needs to win. Such a great film.

Don

Should've split it between modern and classics! Looks like No one is interested in La Dolce Vita! Franco banned it in Spain when he was alive.

Kyle Prince

Gojira and Godzilla (Raymond Burr) are practically two different movies. And since the Burr version is a American creation it shouldn't even qualify for a foreign movie poll.

Richard Maurer

That’s music to my ears

Dan M

It's SO good.

Brent Petty

Kurosawa was a friend of Ishiro Honda and a admirer of his Gojira films. There's even a rumor that Kurosawa wanted to make a Gojira film himself. So seeing as Gojira is the ONLY classic that has a chance of winning and has Kurosawa's stamp of approval, you might want to think about voting for it.

Richard Maurer

Gojira is the only chance for a classic film to win at this point.

Richard Maurer

I’ve been wanting to watch Train to Busan, so if it wins I’ll gladly watch it with you.

Ramah Mustangs

Such a lovely little film.

Stick Figure Studios

try the Japanese film "Shall We Dance". They made an american remake with Richard Gere that is pretty good, but it loses a bit of context when taken out of the stiff, conservative Japanese company man setting of the original. I think you and Carley would love it.

Patrick Dillon

I voted for the top 3

Clay F

Sorry if my above statement seemed over the top, but jdj830 referring to incels made me laugh. Film nerds calling other film nerds nerds is funny to me.

Richard Maurer

@jdj830: I've maintained for a long time that there's a portion of the patrons that love to see Cassie squirm at the most provocative content possible. I'm convinced that is at least partially contributing to these particular movies leading the polls (recency bias and just inexperience with foreign cinema likely being other factors).

Stick Figure Studios

Lol, you guys have your own set of limiting bias, but can't see it. You're as bad as the new films only people, in your own special way.

Richard Maurer

Regarding your name: You will soon receive a cease and desist letter from Toho studios.

Timothy Williams

Calling Gojira, a film that started a 70 year spanning series of films a " big franchise entry" is absurd.

Richard Maurer

ahh no wonder

Bryan Lee Brumbeloe

Absolutely agree. The American version doesn't belong in a foreign film poll anyway.

Richard Maurer

As long as it is the original Gojira and not the American version with Raymond Burr. Not bad, but not the original.

Timothy Williams

To the people who are upset that a classic foreign film isn't winning - be realistic, Gojira is the only classic that stands a chance. So how about throwing your vote over to Gojira?

Richard Maurer

That’s really cool!

Dan M

Actually Gojira is one of my top choices for the Classic Horror poll. I' m a major Godzilla fan, having seen every G film at least once.

Richard Maurer

I guess Gojira is as close to a Classic Horror movie as you can get
not quite what you were thinking though, I suspect

Dan M

No, never watch the trailer.

Ike

Have you ever seen the trailer?

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, she's got a ways to go with Hitchcock, but she's seen about half of Spielberg's oeuvre at this point.

Stick Figure Studios

Still, ya gotta love Raymond Burr. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

DREAMS is stunning. It was actually my first Kurosawa.

Stick Figure Studios

Hey, I recommended PLAY TIME, but nobody cared. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

The movie has no internal consistency or logic... Bad editing, storyboarding whatever it was... I just find it very jarring.

ShazD

Film bros imo are Tarkovsky fans

AC5555

You could widen your horizons. I used to see very few. Now 65 to 70 percent of want I watch every month is foreign, classic Hollywood era or arthouse. My Letterboxd total movie viewing listing is 2,400+ total movies watched.

AC5555

Kurosawa

AC5555

Definitely would take dolce vita or 8 1/2 over that

AC5555

Old movies!

AC5555

For some of us it’s dolce vita and ran that will never get another chance. 😿😿😿

AC5555

I just hope she commits to watching as much of different directors’ filmographies eventually. I’ve seen 90 percent of Hitchcock’s entire filmography for example. Same goes for Spielberg. Cassie hasn’t even scratched the full surface of Hitchcock films and she could go further.

AC5555

He’s made a lot of great ones besides. I personally prefer dreams

AC5555

yeah I’m not a fan of that movie because it’s just morally wrong behavior (for me) 😑. But I know a lot of people like it.

AC5555

yes but I’d rather she ser something far more high traditional art like Ran or Dolce Vita.

AC5555

Yesssssss

AC5555

Ran should’ve been the win instead of all these

AC5555

GODZILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lolđŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

Wesley White

You mean like The Departed?

Richard Maurer

Not really scary - for Cassie. Carly, on the other hand, is the most timid person I've ever seen. Monster Squad would probably scare her.

Richard Maurer

It takes all kinds. But not liking Train to Busan is a little weird, imo.

Richard Maurer

You're right, no need to wait.

Richard Maurer

I'd be happy with any of the 3 front runners, which is the exact opposite of the Request 100-250 Poll, where I didn't want any of the top three to win. Of the top 3 I'd prefer Gojira. Sad to see Let the Right One In isn't in either poll. I would have liked to see how well it would have done.

Richard Maurer

The Intouchables is a phenomenal movie. Not the American version, ugh

James

Traitor!

Richard Maurer

It's the remake though, the one on the list is the Norwegian original with Stellan SkarsgÄrd.

Simmeland

Yeah, It is more fun. Donkeyskin is my personal pick but Cherbourg is the classic.

Jacob King

Bryan Lee Brumbeloe

The French version was first, like I said, all HOLLYWOOD CAN DO ANYMORE IS STEAL OTHERS IDEAS, not come up with their own

John

Surprising there are no French comedies at all, since Hollywood did nothing but remake their best ones for 20 yrs

John

CHERBOURG is great, but I prefer YOUNG GIRLS FROM ROCHEFORT (and I suspect Cassie would like it more too).

Stick Figure Studios

(:-O

Stick Figure Studios

Not to scary? Crazy zombie movie, they will be under their blankets through half the movie.

zynjams

The Intouchables is just "The Upside" in French. I liked it better (in English) with Bryan Cranston, Nicole Kidman, and Kevin Hart.

Dan

This is Todzilla and I didn't even vote for Godzilla, I voted for Kung Fu Hustle đŸŽ€đŸ‘‡

Todzilla

💯 Here I thought I was the only one who hated it by the end

mikethemotormouth

Naturally. Recency bias is real.

Stick Figure Studios

That's always the case but there's something about this poll that makes it painfully obvious. The incels get off on seeing a pretty woman get traumatized. It's so gross. But Cassie maintains her faith in humanity despite it all.

jdj830

It's also not recent enough apparently. Both of the leading titles are post-2000.

Stick Figure Studios

I would also vote for Godzilla minus one

Galen Prenevost

Absolutely.

Stick Figure Studios

It's my favorite Kurosawa.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, I'm surprised that one made it through the screening process.

Stick Figure Studios

Farewell My Concubine

Galen Prenevost

I said I was disappointed, not surprised.

Stick Figure Studios

If she's going to be messed up I'd rather it be with a film that's actually about something and has something profound to say (and Ran is definitely in that category) and not just one of those stylishly nihilistic gorefests all the dudebros come crawling out of the woodwork to vote for in these polls....

jdj830

I don't think she has. I think she would love the 7Up series - tracing a group of British kids throughout their lives with a movie update every seven years. And after she watches Apocalypse Now she needs to see the documentary of its making, Hearts of Darkness.

jdj830

I’d like to nominate Umbrellas of Cherbourg for a future reaction/poll. On this poll I’m okay with Train to Busan winning but my heart is with Godzilla.

Jacob King

New around here are ya?😂

Cole Jennett

With all the great classic foreign films in these two polls, I'm disappointed that the titles leading are a) the most recent and b) the darkest and/or scariest. Sigh. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

Y tu mama tambien was so good

Miguel Tapia

Tampopo is an amazing ode to food.

hurryupmode

You should be aware that Y tu Mama Tambien is quite a racy movie By your standards.

Joseph Scally

Kung Fu Hustle.

Tom Ocasek

La Femme Nikita

OB-Wan222

you and carly are going to love train to busan :P ... it was my personal pick for scary but not too scary October

ExploreWinnipeg

Oh wow. Ran is one of the greatest war movies (and Shakespeare-inspired films) of all time, and La Dolce Vita is one of a lot of your favorite directors' favorite films. Tampopo is quirky and wild and fun and unlike anything else you've seen on this channel. Y Tu Mama Tambien is a groundbreaking work of Mexican cinema and highly entertaining but you should be warned that it's as much about sex as Kill Bill is about violence, so proceed accordingly....

jdj830

Ran is just the most gloriously shot movie on this list. Sweeping epic shots. Kurosawa’s last epic movie.

Ria Grix

It's coming soon to Prime I think, beginning of May is the release in Japan

Chris Retzlaff

When I finally saw the original Japanese Godzilla without all the dumb Raymond Burr stuff, I was amazed that it's a very serious drama, and really, really good.

Dave Sees Movies

Too bad minus one hasn't released yet

Chris Retzlaff

Ran is criminally underrated. My favorite samurai movie and a phenomenal Shakespeare adaptation.

Collin Palmer

Well it is a foreign movie category. People are only going to vote for those that they have seen. I think this was the only way Train to Busan was ever going to be seen on this channel, and it is likely to mess Cassie up. I have only seen it in reactions and it messes me up as well.

Brian McGovern

Norwegian. Starring the Swedish Stellan Skarsgard.

Happy Hanukkah

It seems mostly overlooked today but I maintain it's one of Nolan's best films! He should do more straight genre stuff.

Henry Graham

I cannot express enough how much I want Godzilla to win

Godzilla Jones

I saw Das Boot a long time ago as a kid when I lived in Germany.

Rick Williams

Ran is a magnificent movie. It's a Japanese version of Shakespeare's, King Lear. It's visually stunning.

Bill Hayden

A korean horrorish (not really scary) movie. More so it's a tear jerker

breanna

Ran is so beautifully filmed. Also though, Godzilla and Kung Fu Hustle. Too many good movies.

Rusty Childers

I know Ran would mess Cassie up emotionally, but, damn, is it a good movie.

Tal Moore

Oh, I Love Tampopo. Happy just seeing it in the list.

Uncle Phoenix

Ah, watching the numbers rack up on these polls just depresses me sometimes. Akira Kurosawa made Ran, one of the most visually stunning films ever made, when he was practically blind - but it hasn't got any zombies in it, I guess!

Henry Graham

True but it's available less than a week

Philip G.

Never seen that. Just hear it suggested a ton on pretty much every movie-related channel. Is that Japanese? Like an action thriller?

Chris Thom

A friend of mine regularly attends genre conventions. Each time, before he goes, he asks me if there’s anything I’d like him to get signed for me. I choose from among the various guests and give him a one sheet or other piece of memorabilia to get signed (along with the money, of course). A few years back, he attended a convention at which Haruo Nakajima, the original Godzilla suit actor, was signing. I got an autographed one sheet. Shortly afterwards, Haruo Nakajima passed away. That one sheet is probably my most prized piece of movie memorabilia. PS: After writing the above I remembered that I also got a one sheet for “Night of the Living Dead” signed by George Romero and a one sheet of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” signed by the main cast. So, a three way tie for my favorite piece of memorabilia.

Just Plain Bob

Same

Prophet2272

I’m bummed Tampopo is so far behind. Not only is it the greatest film about food of all time but it’s one of the funniest film of all time

Rosario Cicero

Unfortunately not available to stream yet. Though the original will give context to any of the Godzilla movies she wishes to watch in the future. (Though I doubt it will win)

Prophet2272

Train to Busan finally made a poll, keeping my fingers crossed. 👍

Danny (Icarus)

I would add The Hidden Fortress which is the movie George Lucas Drew inspiration from to make star wars where thestory is told from the perspective of 2 peasants(C3P0 and R2D2)

Ulf Jerlström

Guys, we may never get another chance for Train to Busan, just saying.

Joe

AZKABAN is far and away my favorite of the HP series.

Matt Rose

Yeah I loved Gravity too. One of the best 3d experiences ever at the theater. Did almost throw up at the beginning though. Children of Men made me deeply depressed for like a week. Harry Potter 3 is pure magic.

Chris Thom

Wait Train to Busan? Yes yes yes

Philip G.

Alfonso Cuaron is amazing, and his CHILDREN OF MEN is one of the best dystopian films I've ever seen. Really liked GRAVITY as well.

Matt Rose

Yeah I haven't seen that many either tbh. Which have you seen?

Chris Thom

Would have been my vote too and it's out next week

Philip G.

I say bypass all of these and watch Godzilla Minus 1

Philip G.

Lol.

Chris Thom

Had no idea that was a remake. Is it Swedish? Just guessing because of the cold, snowy setting.

Chris Thom

Y Tu Mama Tambien could be fun if you want to get to know famous directors better. He's one of the best working today. Multiple Oscars. This was one of his first before he got his big break with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Very talented.

Chris Thom

Godzilla then Godzilla minus one

Neil Varma

As a write in candidate: DANGAL, from India. It's the number one film of all time in India for a reason...it's fantastic.

Matt Rose

They would adore THE INTOUCHABLES.

Matt Rose

I wouldn’t call the third most recent out of the ten “not really recent”. The only “not recent” also just happens to be a big franchise entry.

Lance Li

you would love love love love love love THE INTOUCHABLES. I think you'd kinda like it is what I'm saying.

Matt Rose

It would definitely be a hit with the popcorn crew.

Pickupthepieces76

I enjoyed it quite a bit and it's certainly a highlight in the genre.

Pickupthepieces76

i dunno 3 in the lead, 2 are not really recent. Not much in it at this stage.

rakesh

Insomnia was remade in 2002, a Chris Nolan film with Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Worth the watch.

pinkdino99

My choice is The Intouchables (based on a true story); among the leaders, Godzilla. I wonder who saw Rififi here (I did) :-)

René Ferland

it has some great comedic moments. Went into the movie not expecting it and absoultey loved it.

rakesh

Agreed. I’d recommend she see Ran instead.

AC5555

Seriously. It's one of those movies to put on if you're in a bad mood or in a funk, cause it'll immediately lift your spirits and make you very happy.

Stranger2Reality

If we're being serious, Godzilla movies should have their own watchlist, with multiple polls. They are a whole world of awesomeness that no movie reviewer's body of work is complete without.

Joe Jupiter

Kinda in agreement. Nothing special.

rakesh

You might save Train to Busan for October but it’s not necessary

Justtired

I can't agree more. :-)

René Ferland

Train to Busan is horribly overrated

ShazD

I agree. But Godzilla Minus 1 isn’t available yet.

Dan M

Both "Train to Busan" and "Godzilla" are great movies. Going with "Godzilla" to get "Godzilla, Minus One" on the list. Which is an absolutely great, great, great movie !!!!!!

Bill Maurer

All great choices! I’m a huge Akira Kurosawa fan so I have to go with Ran!

Mark Ultimatemusings

Gojira/Godzilla all the way. If you plan on beginning a journey into The Monsterverse”, you need to see how it all started. And yes
it should definitely be the original without Raymond Burr scenes edited in.

Dan M

The Intouchables is one of the all-time feel-good movies and would be a great Cassie and Carly watch!

Above Average Dave

Yay!! So glad Train to Busan made the poll!!

fish_thefilmcollector

Have you ever watched any documentaries as part of this channel?

Matt

All good choices. I think Intouchables is fav of the group. I think you would dig it too.

Ian A

Just make sure its not the Godzilla King of the Monsters version dubbed in English with Raymond Burr inserts

Jacob Wagner

I don't know foreign films. I only recognize two of these names from all the ones listed on both poles. And I have only seen one of them.

Rick Williams

My issue with that film without going into spoilers is that I hated all the main characters. But that’s just me.

AC5555

GOJIRA is a film that everyone should see at least once.

Steven Perez

Maybe. Maybe martial arts and comedy fans go for Kung Fu Hustle!

rakesh

Tampopo is wholesome and charming. It gets my vote. Y Tu Mama Tambien might be a bit too spicy to edit around for YouTube.

Adam Doyle

Kung Fun Hustle is a comedy? I never knew that.

Ike

Kung Fu Hustle FTW Plenty of Gozilla movies. there, not sure that many peopel have seen the 54 version. Would have voted for godzilla minus one, but it's not out as yet

rakesh

These are all winners!

Wes

Man I would love a double feature with original Godzilla followed by G Minus One

Robin T

Y tu mamå también and Ran are a little intense for different reasons for Cassie imo. Idk personally. Dolce Vita is challenging! Highly excited that this poll is happening though!

AC5555

You would absolutely love The Intouchables! Even if it doesn't win, you should give it a look, I guarantee you'll be grinning ear to ear with that movie.

Stranger2Reality

Y Tu Mama También is a fantastic film! And if the number of votes it's got so far is anything to go by, an underrated film at that.

Jake McNulty

And
of course it’s the most recent that’s gonna win.

Lance Li

Y Tu Mamå También is an Alfonso Cuarón masterpiece in my opinion. Pure cinema.

Chip MC

Who doesn’t love tampopo?

Lance Li

Film bros are going to vote for Train to Busan. But there are some very unique, interesting choices here!

Alex Villarreal

Have a brand new copy of Ran, haven’t had a chance to give it a spin yet. This would be a good time too 👍
