I, Robot (2004) - Full Reaction

I'm not going to spoil too much of the reaction here, but watching this was crazy with how far we've come with AI over the past year! Hope you enjoy :)

I, Robot (2004) - Full Reaction

Comments

If you like "I, Robot" you'll enjoy "Stealth". Another one that makes you think twice about robots/AI. I highly recommend "Stealth" - action-packed, entertaining, and VERY good!!!

David Livingston

Bright Angel, Miss Cassie - you are the good in humanity. We appreciate all your hard work and heartfelt commentary.

Clifton Owens

This movie definitely doesnt do the books justice, but I do actually see where they tried to take material from several of the I-robot short stories,... here is a synopsis of the short stories in I-robot https://www.britannica.com/biography/Isaac-Asimov. R Daneel Olivaw and his partner Elijah the mistrusting cop,... so they kind of pulled that into this movie as well,... but the books are much better. His early books were written as stand alones, (the short stories were sometimes published in some magazines) but he pulled them all together later,... I did enjoy Cassies reaction to the movie, so watching it this time was more enjoyable than the first time I watched it. I was so critical of the movie because I had enjoyed the books so much and it barely resembles what he wrote at all,...

ENC SW DV Rush

"Bicentennial Man"!!! (1999, Robin Williams, Sam Neill!!)

Riley

did anybody else switch to working at home for a time? I remember having to drive through rush hour traffic for work. After a couple of years without needing to drive I sometimes have the urge to go out at rush hour for no reason just to experience fighting traffic! Hahaha remember when you had to do that? lol

Mannygogou

Does this make you realize how crazy it is that we drive our own vehicles? There will be a time when "taking manual control of a car" is the crazy idea, lol

Mannygogou

I’m a huge fan of ‘I, Robot’! The movie’s visuals are breathtaking, creating a technological atmosphere that’s captivating. Will Smith’s performance is outstanding, adding a unique charm to the storyline. What’s truly impressive is how this movie was so ahead of its time. It’s a shining example of innovative filmmaking!

StaticBlaster

Check out Independence day.

Steve

Hi Cassie. The full reaction link for download is not there. Can you please fix it? Thanks!

RX2904

Sorry, but I felt that Independence Day was lacking on just about every level. As far as I, Robot needing to be much more intelligent, I disagree It was a sci-fi action movie that happened to be more thought-provoking than most others of the genre. I know some have said they wanted something else out of a movie called "I, Robot," but I feel like if one's opinion of a movie is wholly dependent on its title, then that seems a little silly.

WastedPo

Keith, I could only hope that someone like you who loves Caves Of Steel would make it. I’ve often thought of my dream casting for the movie, and if both in their prime, I would want Harrison Ford for the cop and Ryan Gosling for the robot. If only that could have ever happened!

Mike LL

Mike, I too love "Caves of Steel" 1953 a brilliant SciFi Buddy Cop book. It is the book I most want to see made into a movie, may need to win the lottery, move to Hollywood and do it myself to make sure they don't butcher it!

Keith Jones

You ain't ever seen bad boys 2?

Eric Wallace

I enjoyed most Asimov stories but Will Smith? I cannot stand him, never could so I have to pass on this. I hope they remake it with a real actor.

thansen

Independence is exactly as it should be be - a big dumb fun blockbuster. But I, Robot should have been much more intelligent. It's like watching Blade Rubber directed by Roland Emmerich

Hail to the King

I've always really liked "I, Robot," and I'm glad you appreciated it too. I've never understood the general disdain people seem to have for it, while much less compelling Will Smith vehicles like Independence Day are beloved.

WastedPo

Thanks man! 10 days ost surgery I feel way better than I expected

Robert Holmes

First watch for me. Some cool concepts but it was really puffed up with a lot of the action. I will say that as dependent on CGI as the movie was, I thought the CGI held up fairly well for the time. I also was reminded of Minority Report with some of the production design and aesthetics in the first act. But on the whole it doesn't compare favorably to MR, especially the reveal in the third act. Funny to see this is set in 2035!

SeanATX

Just a little jokey joke 😊 Hopefully, Cassie won’t be offended

Robert da Spruce

For the ultimate movie in this theme of AI taking over, Cassie needs to go back to 2001 : A Space Odyssey. Hall is the original rogue AI.

L A Lou Peña

I think Cassie is forgetting The Terminator. Most of modern AI fears are expressed in The Terminator when "Skynet became self-aware" at 2:14am in August... then in a gravely voice... "It began learning at an exponential rate. In a panic they tried to pull the plug." It was game over man... Anyone who didn't have two million sunblock was going to have a really bad day...! Earlier than that there was the computer A.I. Joshua in "Wargames" it simulated "Thermo-nuclear war." The AI pondered the insanity of war. Also let's not forget... now in a mysterious voice... "We don't know who struck first. But we did this, we scorched the sky. In a desperate attempt to deprive the machines of the energy from the sun, humans did this!" Morpheus gestures at the dark madness as he explains the origins of The Matrix. Cue eerie transformation music.

Mannygogou

I think that whole pie was for him, that's why he stuck his spoon in it. i wasn't really focused on the pie situation but it makes sense that she only bakes it for him and also he took the whole thing when he left. She only said "put that on a plate" but she didn't say not to take it. I assume the deal is he gets the whole pie. But was it apple? I prefer peach 🙂 oh... ah... there's no way that was the middle of the pie, it was as close to the edge without being the edge crust - but that's probably just me.

Mannygogou

Yes it is. A lot of people are not really thinking about how many jobs AI will take from people.

Rick Williams

Alan Tudyk was also the Racist Phillies manager in 42 who hurled racial insults at Jackie during that game. He's a very versatile actor.

L A Lou Peña

A better movie about AI: 'AI: Artificial Intelligence' by Spielberg. Or Ex Machina. Or Upgrade.

Odd Thomas

Will Smith was on the downslope before The Slap, lbh. I think the last decent one was I Am Legend.

Odd Thomas

Awww... don't be mean!

Terry Yelmene

Please watch the Legend of Bagger Vance.

mattosh79

"Real steel" was a favourite movie of my multiple nephews, and I always enjoyed it. I think I had the same thought during that same reaction. It's like if "Rocky" and Wall-e" or "Big Hero Six" had a baby you would get "Real Steel". But it has also crossed my mind recently for a couple of other reasons: * Hugh Jackman's back catalogue has a bunch of movies that would be right up PiB's alley, with "Real Steel" being one of them. * An underrated movie about family issues directed by Shawn Levy. It would be enjoyed by Cassie and Carly, another movie of his I would really like them to see is "This is where I leave you". They have form with Shawn Levy with the "Night at the Museum" movies and the "Cheaper by the Dozen" (they haven't reacted to these movies but they have seen them and mention them in other reactions.

Mojo One Thousand

It's funny that Cassie mentioned that Will Smith looked like "Neo" from "The Matrix". It would have been because "The Matrix" was still a hot topic at time "I, Robot" was made. But more importantly, Will Smith was first offered the role of "Neo" but turned it down as he didn't understand the story. So, there is a universe out there where Will Smith was "Neo".

Mojo One Thousand

You also saw Will Smith in Independence Day.

Shawn Kildal

Wash (Alan Tudyk) from Firefly was the voice of Sonny in this movie.

Shawn Kildal

Ah yes, the first of... (checks notes) ...SEVEN times that Alan Tudyk has voiced a robot or AI. So far.

Robin T

This was a good movie and a fun reaction. - I never noticed the Pie thing until you pointed it out. It was weird and my grandmother would probably leap across the table if I stuck my spoon into the middle of a pie like that! - Also uncomfortable how “Det. Spooner” (Will Smith) just walked into Dr. Calvin’s home, poured himself a drink and just sat down. The best and somewhat haunting part of this film for me was Dr. Lanning’s posthumous speech about the “ghosts in the machine.” I thought it was beautifully written and well delivered - a series of questions about ‘when does consciousness begin?’ within & among machines. Sad, but thought provoking.

Ike

I wish Cassie had a second channel that explored behind the scenes, creators, and source material. If she did, I'd recommend she watch Bill Moyers interview of Isaac Asimov. The man was one of the last real Polymaths. He wrote/edited about 500 books in sci-fi, mystery, fantasy, chemistry, astronomy, math, a guide to the bible (that's freakin massive), and so many amazing short stories. His short story The Last Question is my favorite. There's only two downsides to the man. One, Apple butchered his Foundation Series. Second, the man was disgustingly misogynistic.

Andrew Ramos

Hang in there buddy! Full recovery ahead, I can see it now!

Andrew Ramos

Ok but you do need to watch Bedazzled.

Ryan Rothenbach

I read a discussion about layoffs in the gaming industry where a majority of the posts where in the style of "I wouldn't mind playing an AI generated game as long as it's entertaining". That was surprising to me.

Grad

Robots are definitely taking over the world. Sonny can wink. Cassie can’t. Need I say more 😉

Robert da Spruce

Wow, that was Alan Tudyk. He did a great job.

Uncle Phoenix

If you ever want to get into another show I highly recommend Westworld (2016) on HBO with Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. Its one of my all time favorites when it comes to the concept of AI and robots. It goes into what is the nature of consciousness and are robots able to have consciousness and if so, does that make them more human than human? Season 1 is perfect and you can stop there, but the rest are pretty good too.

Blake Evans

Good movie. Makes you think. AI will take jobs from people. An they are already making AI that can learn and improve. How will that end up? It makes you worry. Can will control AI as it learns and grows? Great Reaction Cassie.

Rick Williams

Forgot to mention to my comment above with AI how long before we can say chat GPT show me a movie watch along in the style of popcorn in bed with this movie.. ...😱. Just kidding . Your irreplaceable. 😃

Canadianant

A few comments. Well I agree with some of the other comments above that this wasn't one of Will's best, it was a fun enough watch along with you but is far from the hard sci-fi that it was originally written as. They really "popcorned " this up (no offense). It's a lot more actiony than say ex machina. As far as Will Smith goes it is kind of an interesting case and that due to the slap heard around the world he has kind of fallen off in the public conscious a bit. I mean it's his life to live and I try my best to separate people's work as an actor. Quite frankly his home life situation is quite bizarre at this point as for whatever reason and his boiling over seemed bizarre. That being said he's had a ton of huge movies over the years if that's funny that you say that maybe he wasn't as big as you thought. Looking at IMDb he has 15 movies over the 200 million dollar box office point with lots of huge ones in there. Independence Day bad boys ,(1+2) enemy of the State , men in black (1,2+3). I robot was big . Lots of others. For a lot of years he was one of the biggest stars on the planet.

Canadianant

I liked it, alright. I remember when I first saw Blade Runner when I was 20, and I loved that movie; I also love The Terminator. I remember thinking, if this ever happens, we are screwed. Well, here we are. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) is a good movie. I just watched M3GAN (2022). That was funny and a little spooky. Robots aren't a new idea. They go all the way back to the silent era. If you ever want to watch an excellent silent movie, check out the pre-code sci-fi "Metropolis (1927)."

Eddie Perkins

I had the great pleasure of meeting and speaking with Issac Asimov several times in the '70s. He was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met.

Agrippa

Excellent. You hit the nail on the head about it being an action flick but also very deep.

Timothy Williams

Very underrated SciFi

Russell Teo

Thanks for the diversion of a movie I haven’t seen in a while! I’m a long time lurker. On 1/14 I underwent a dual lung transplant at Univ of Utah and will be hospitalized for a few weeks so I’m looking forward to catching up!!

Robert Holmes

Independence Day is the major blockbuster starring Will Smith. This isn't my favorite Will Smith or Robot/AI based scifi movie but still enjoyable. The premise is interesting. Don't worry though. Humanity is not close to creating autonomous, self thinking AI just yet.

Eric

Will Smith recommendation- Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)- Smith, Matt Damon, and Charlize Theron, with Jack Lemmon. It's one of those sports movies that really isn't.

Mike Lemon

I am glad you eventually reacted to I Robot. In your comments afterwards you mentioned a few movies that are AI themed. I want to suggest one. During Rocky II, you blurted out a comment during the championship fight. You said " Why does this sport exist? " There is a movie where society eventually asked the same question and rectified it. It's a movie called Real Steal starring Hugh Jackman. Your first reaction may be this is a lot of High Concept Fluff but you will be surprised by the quality of the story. It even has some of the elements that you look for, including a love story or two. Really enjoyed your progression of realization in your reaction. Thumbs Up!!!

L A Lou Peña

Seriously.

Stick Figure Studios

And DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and KISS KISS BANG BANG. This was easily the worst movie on that poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Sorry Joe, this has been one of the best 1-2 months stretches of great film reacts PiB has ever had!!!

Terry Yelmene

This is a tough call. I saw this movie when it came out and despite never even reading the source material on which it's based (which I understand it bears very little resemblance to), still thought it was lousy and have no desire to watch it again. Consequently, I will probably skip this one and just wait for the YouTube edit where I can just get the "highlights" (along with your reaction of course). Still mad that this beat films like DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and KISS KISS BANG BANG in the poll, but then again, while I have often been disappointed by the Patreon community's votes in the past, more often than not they can still pick a good movie whereas the YT results almost always go for the dumbest aimed-at-the-lowest-common-denominator tripe. Oh, well. Looking forward to seeing what wins your romance poll (my vote is for SINGING IN THE RAIN; probably the greatest music I'll ever to come out of Hollywood and one that I've been pushing for a reaction to for a long time).

Stick Figure Studios

"I too, have a distrust of robots." "V.I.K.I.'s very BIG and GLOWY!" "This movie came out in what...the early 2000's? It probably seemed A LOT crazier than it does right now... because THAT DEOSN'T SEEM THAT CRAZY!!! DOES IT!?! ~ PiB Cassie No Cassie, it definitely doesn't. Did you know Elon Musk has a robotics company? I'm just say'n!

Terry Yelmene

Strongly agree. Big time.

Clay F

Regarding the intro- well on the one hand 5 years ago millions of people would have agreed that Will Smith was one of the most famous actors of all time. Today millions of people know his wife is sleeping around. And then they put all their crap out in the open with that Red Table Talk nonsense. Jada seems to have broken him and for that I feel sorry for him. On the other hand he seems like a pretty crappy guy himself. And crazy but not so crazy he was able to assault someone on live television and nothing happened. They even let him go on to give a speech afterwards. So...mixed opinions. Fresh Prince was great though!

My_Cousin_Mose

I think I remember OCC making a Motorcyle for this movie. That's all I got

nick bell

saw this a long time ago and barely remember it, so should be an interesting reaction

JL_83

please watch a decent movie soon. Good god

Joe

Amen. I had not read Asimov when this movie first came out and I still hated it. Will Smith acts like Will Smith. The story is very shallow. Having now read Asimov’s work, it’s even worse. The “lessons” to be derived from the film are the opposite of the author’s intention. To me, it’s similar to what they did with Richard Matheson's masterpiece “I Am Legend.” Hollywood is just too stupid to understand the works of these great authors and too greedy for easy money to care.

Just Plain Bob

Great commentary. I have never seen this movie, after reading reviews, for all of the reasons you stated. Not sure that I can resist watching Cassie's reaction, though (I definitely could not pass it up if it were a sisters watch).

Steve Miller

To answer your question of who voices Sonny, it was none other than Alan Tudyk, who voiced the similar K2-SO in Rogue One.

aarswft

Love the deep dive into Asimov. My favorite Asimov story is the "relativity of wrongness" story. For those who don't know what that is, in 1989, Asimov was writing an English Lit student who criticized Asimov for thinking he knew a great deal, pointing out what we think is true inevitably turns out to be wrong. Asimov responded: "John, when people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together." He continued with: "The basic trouble, you see, is that people think that "right" and "wrong" are absolute; that everything that isn't perfectly and completely right is totally and equally wrong. However, I don't think that's so.

Art of Free Speech

I saw this when it came out ( WOW 20 years ago!) and I remember liking it but now Will Smiths character comes off ( and since Will Smith is not REALLY an actor in my book, more of a character) as, well, Will Smith. Snarky, bravado, womanizing, close-minded,unwilling to communicate clearly ( or maybe unable). Just unlikable to me. The story is however interesting since it is Asimov. Sadly the robot comes off as more human and intelligent than the humans. Although Will Smiths characters guilt over being saved made HIM more human. No adult would choose to be saved from death and have a child die. No matter how much logic would say it was best choice.

Anthony Perez

It's a crime this won out over Lost in Translation

Hail to the King

In the 1940's and 1950's, Issac Asimov was a prolific short story science fiction writer, wrote stories for all the science fiction magazines. He looked around at all the cliched stories of "mad robot on the loose" and wrote a series of short stories that told about the development of humanistic robots, that by rule could not harm humans. In these stores, he laid down his Three Laws of Robotics. He coined the term positronic brain, the term that was used about Data in Star Trek. Tasha Yar explicitly mentioned "Asimov's dream of a positronic brain" in an early STTNG episode. Asimov also coined the word “robotics”, the word first appeared in Asimov's story Runaround in 1942. Those short stories were collected in a book titled I, Robot. The stories explored the problems of developing intelligent robots and the technical and social problems that might result. Mature and intelligent science fiction concepts. They led to a series of robot novels that Asimov later incorporated into his sci-fi classic Foundation series of stories and novels. A new generation of authors have expanded Asimov's work and written new Robot and Foundation novels, now a shared universe. These novels have millions of copies in print and have had a huge influence on science fiction to this day, all beginning with these stories collected in I, Robot. These movie idiots bought the rights to the title and made this movie about, yes, "killer robot on the loose", the complete antithesis of the author's intentions. The mature, thoughtful and intelligent science fiction concepts that Asimov wrote about in his robot stories were reduced to the lowest common denominator idea that would appeal to a general movie audience. The makers of I, Robot should be ashamed that they couldn't come up with a more intelligent idea based on the works of one of the most celebrated and revered sci-fi authors. I've never been able to give this movie an objective watch because I am such a huge fan of Issac Asimov. In his first full robot novel, a cop who resented robots, much like Will Smith in this movie, was given a robot partner to solve a murder case and they had to learn how to work together. That would have made a much better movie than the one made out of I, Robot. This is PiB so I guess I will have to watch along with Cassie and give this one an objective watch for the first time, that is what she deserves.

Mike LL

I think people voted for I, Robot because it has Alan Tudyk, and everyone knows you love him. Not that you would recognise him in the movie.

Brian McGovern

I’m excited to see if you realize that Sonny is Wash from Firefly.

djKENTO

I have zero recollection of this movie, except for the fact that when we went to see it in the cinema, my friend thought that the title was suggesting the robot character's name, like his first name was Ian or something. Subsequently, we only ever referred to this film as Ian Robot.
