[YT Edit] A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

Hey guys! Here is the YT edit for "A Fish Called Wanda" which will premiere shortly. Hope you enjoy!

Here is the full reaction to this movie.

[YT Edit] A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

Comments

I read that a man Ole Bentzen died while laughing too much in the advanced screening of the film

S Elphick

It was Clockwise that gave birth to A Fish Called Wanda. Clockwise worked in Britain but not America, and John Cleese (a) was curious as to why, and (b) wanted to find out why, and contrive a movie that worked in both countries. He was hugely conscious of the American reaction to this film, and nervous about the scene in which he's in the oil barrel, insulting Otto. But it works for 2-3 reasons (my opinion here): 1. Otto is so awful that nobody is on his side 2. We can tell Archie is playing Otto 3. Archie has previously insulted his own compatriots and praised Americans: we don't feel he's anti-American, only anti-Otto (and so is everyone in the audience at this point)

Henry Fitzgerald

fyi there's a new series streaming on Brit Box, docu-fiction all about the real Archie Leach and how he became Cary Grant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40ZjfqCOwbU

Paul Rich

If you liked this one you should really check out Clockwise. In my oppinion one of the Cleeses funniest movies.

Pete Johansson

I never got one of the jokes until now: John Cleese, who wrote the screenplay, named his character "Achie Leach". That was Cary Grant's real name.

David Conroy

My wife watched that movie for the first time with her grandma. Extremely embarrassing for her.

Mike Henderson

Two Kevin Kline movies where he's a lot more likeable, even loveable: • Dave (with Sigourney Weaver) • French Kiss (with Meg Ryan)

Kristin D

I so want someone to react to this! French Kiss is one of my top 2 favorite rom-coms, right next to Overboard. Kline is so brilliant, and he and Ryan have great chemistry.

Kristin D

Cassie would LOVE this movie.

Kristin D

The advent box wasn't for the kids it was for you and Carly!

Ronald Carpenter

27:35 Yes, that is actually based on a real life incident that happened to a friend of John Cleese. He talks about it in this 2001 Michael Parkinson interview at 31:35 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7LFQpHKgpI

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Wonderful reaction. John Cleese and Michael Palin are of Monty Python fame which is an institution in the U.K. I agree with your assessment though JLC does steal the show

LDC7080

17:58 "Did he just *face-push* her?!" I know, right?! That's why she ended up leaving Otto for Archie; Archie Leach would never face-push a woman! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukZDbYWVybs

Happy Hanukkah

If we’re talking about more British comedy then I have to mention Nuns on the run, Monty pythons life of Brian. And the modern classic that is Hot Fuzz.

Don

Walt Whitman, Song of Myself: Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) [And then he drowned in the "Sea" of Galilee.]

Happy Hanukkah

Want more John Cleese? He and Michael Palin steal the show in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I still laugh out loud every time I see this movie. But British humor is not for everyone.

Dan M

I agree…she has the best smile. But I also love her reactions to jump scares (Poltergeist 😂). It’s all good. Complex is better than simplistic.

Dan M

“Dave” is such a great movie. Another great performance from Kevin Kline. And it has everything Cassie and Carly love…comedy, romance, and a good story. Please react to this movie Cassie 🤞

Dan M

A fun watch with Cassie. I hope that those disappointed by the lack of success of The Bishop's Wife are assuaged by this selection. Cassie, John Cleese is (was) one of the top English comedians. If you want to do a change-of-pace TV reaction, Fawlty Towers (12 episodes) is arguably the best sitcom ever. 6:25 You know, Jamie Lee Curtis is reminding me of Carrie Fisher... 24:00 Ken? Where do you see Ken? That's Lionel Joseph, from the African Education Conference. (You might know him better as Louis Winthorpe III.) 28:55 More like ken't ken't ken't, amiright? Ba-dumm-tss.

Happy Hanukkah

Ryan O'Neal passed away?! Oh man! Oh God! [etc] :-) RIP We can even make it a poll, with Love Story, What's Up Doc, Barry Lyndon...

Happy Hanukkah

I love any review where she smiles through it. But then why do I keep suggesting scary movies...I'm complex!

Barry Justice

That would definitely help all of us Yanks.

Barry Justice

I loved your reaction to this movie Cassie! You were so animated and had some great comments 😂 Bravo Signorina!

Dan M

I enjoyed that so much. This was one of those films i had on VHS as a kid and watched over and over. Its is very very British though. Not just that but very very 1980's British humour. One of the funniest moments was George saying "You did well my son" and you being confused as you were sure Ken wasn't George's son. I think if you watch anymore British films those of us on here from the UK should put a slang glossary together for you.

Don

Silverado got my vote.

Michael Labs

He had her at "You're the vulgarian, you F___!"

2-Can

The bit about Otto becoming Minister of Justice was a dig: South Africa was still apartheid when this movie came out, but being widely condemned for it.

David Conroy

I dislike Kevin Kline because he STOLE my teenage crush...Phoebe Cates! I'm sure that Cassie emphasizes with me, because I imagine he's just like Otto in real life. Yes I know that they've been happily married for many years and have several children. But I mean come-on...Otto!!!

Barry Justice

Also starring John Cleese as well.

Patrick Flanagan

This movie is hilarious. When it came out it was a big deal to a certain type of person, of which I am one, because it was the first time two Monty Python members appeared in a mainstream American film. Not a masterpiece perhaps, but one of my favorite comedies of the 1980s. Not sure why your patrons didn’t like it more - maybe it’s a generational thing, or the humor (humour?) is a bit too British for some tastes. In any case I agree it’s one of Jamie Lee Curtis’s finest moments, and I appreciate that she gets to be funny while maintaining her agency and dignity (both of which were a bit compromised in Trading Places and True Lies.) And watching Kevin Kline makes me realize you need to see more of him - check out Dave, his political romantic comedy with Sigourney Weaver from the early 90s that was a kind of spiritual forerunner to The American President. In any case great to see your reaction as usual!

jdj830

I’d like to suggest Paper Moon in honor of Ryan O’Neil who passed today.

Kevin Townsend

Heist? Romantic Comedy? Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan? C’mon!! … Please watch French Kiss. You’re gonna love it I promise.

Andy Perezchica

You might recognize John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick from the Harry Potter movies.

2-Can

John Cleese was, of course, Q in the Brosnan Bonds.

Stephen Malloy

Also In and Out, and Life as a House.

Jeff Rogers

It's John Cleese from Monty Python (and Silverado with Kevin Kline)

Jeff Rogers

I also like Kevin Kline along with Sigourney Weaver in the movie "Dave"

Clayton Johnson

If you liked this one, you should also watch at some point “Fierce Creatures “ , stars the same four actors

David Nesbit

Cassie, please, please, please watch Silverado sooner rather than later. It co-stars Kevin Kline (Otto) as Paden. As much as you hated him in Fish Called Wanda, that’s how much you’ll love him in Silverado. It also features a very young Kevin Costner, Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) and Scott Glenn (Backdraft, Right Stuff and Silence of the Lambs). All that, plus it’s got a great story and excellent direction. One of the great westerns.
