Star Trek: The Original Series - Key Epi's (S1E22, S2E15)

I'm surprised at how much of a feel I have for these characters after only 4 episodes, I'm glad I watched one more so I could see more Scotty!! I really liked Space Seed (ffoorreesshhaaddoowwiinnngg??) and Tribbles was fun! To the movies we go, infinity and beyond ;)

The episodes I watched in this one are:

You can watch the previous two episodes here: "The City on the Edge of Forever" & "Amok Time"

Star Trek: The Original Series - Key Epi's (S1E22, S2E15)

Yeah there's no way, no matter how much she likes it. Watching all of a 7 season show just doesn't fit the format of this channel. I do agree though that "bonus content" is a fair way to describe the TNG movies. Not really the original cast movies - those really are their own thing, distinct from the series, and many have grown up with them or otherwise come to love them who have never seen TOS. But the TNG movies don't really stand on their own and probably aren't worth watching without spending more time on the show. Personally I'm hoping for at least 12 eps, 8 at an absolute bare minimum (assuming they'll divide into videos in multiples of 4).

Fun Facts: James Montgomery Doohan, the Canadian actor and author who portrayed Scotty, was not only a distinguished veteran of World War II but also a survivor of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, during which he sustained injuries from friendly fire. Remarkably, he concealed the loss of part of his index finger throughout his appearances in the TV and film series.

Larry

I sympathise with the sentiment but, on balance, I think she should watch the 1st one. I do wonder if anyone would notice if she skipped the 5th.

James UK

I would gladly trade the first and 5th movie for 2 more episodes each

Shawn Kildal

Yes. 3 is a weak film, but not watching it would leave a gap. So unlike 5, there is an argument for watching it.

David Conroy

Agree. Skipping Star Trek 3 would leave Cassie confused about Star Trek 4 and would also nullify a huge emotional component of Star Trek 6.

Just Plain Bob

Well said, Steve.

Mike LL

I don’t think there’s any chance she will be watching all of TNG no matter how much she likes it up to that point. I’d expect her to do just that, watch a select few and carry on with those movies.🤷‍♂️

Cole Jennett

Good job getting a taste of the original Star Trek. With the movies I recommend watching them in order. But, 2, 3 and 4 are one story. So, watching just 2 and 4 as some have suggested would be confusing to you.

Rick Williams

I think it would be cruel to have her watch all of TNG.

thansen

You are right Mike. As Herodotus, born in 484 B.C. insisted, “There is nothing new under the Sun” As most realize, it is very difficult to come up with new ideas, but it is very possible to remind the world of something it already knows in a refreshing and compelling way. Star Trek brought a lot of ideas previously expressed well in written science fiction to mass audiences. And no doubt fueled the imagination of many hoping to contribute to a positive vision of the future.

Steve Holton

On to the movies now. There are different views on the first. It’s far from my favourite. 2, 3 & 4 are a continuing story. 5 is the weakest and 6 is one of the best. Enjoy!

James UK

I think you’re right. But the The Motion Picture is going to be a slugfest for me. What is it - 8 hours long? 🙂 jk

Ike

I hope no one convinces her to do TNG this way. I couldn't even imagine cutting that series up into 10 or even 20 episodes. It wouldn't do the series justice and Cassie would miss so much. It should be all or nothing. The movies of TOS and TNG are bonus content. Don't skip the main event just to get to the bonus content.

Andrew Ramos

I agree, I think she's really gonna like Star Trek 4, it was actually the first movie of the franchise I saw as a kid and I loved it. I've never considered myself a Trekkie but I'm kind of on a mission to watch every episode of every show now lol.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Like others have said, Klingon characters look different in the movies. From what I understand this is because most of the aliens in Star Trek look so similar to humans. They didn’t explain the change until the 5th Star Trek TV show in the early 2000s. You just gotta go “okay these are Klingon now” and move on hahaha.

djKENTO

Yeah, your probably right that could be went it started to change. It’s just most if not all the show I watched during that time period was new stories every week.

Dean Holt

I first noticed a move away from episodic television around the time that X Files was first broadcast. There were some shows, such as Dallas and other soap operas, that had overarching stories, but they were few and far between. After X Files, it became the norm to tell extended stories that built on each other. Most genre tv today even includes a show “bible” describing the rules of the universe in which it’s taking place and outlining where the story will go over the course of multiple seasons. Perhaps the most well known story bible was for Carnivale. Too bad it was canceled before the show runner had an opportunity to see his vision fully realized.

Just Plain Bob

The TNG and DS9 are my top two shows as well lol. And yes I love that DS9 episode it’s done brilliantly re visiting the old tv show. Not sure about yourself but from the original movies I think she’s going to enjoy The 4th one the most. Personally it’s probably by 3rd favourite behind 6 and 2. But 2,3 and 4 do make an excellent trilogy.

Dean Holt

Glad you’ve like your Trek journey so far. Tbh most TV shows back then and in the 80s / 90s when I was a kid and in my teens where episodic. And it’s one of the many reasons I enjoyed The Mandalorian as most shows now unfortunately you just get one long story throughout the season. But yes you will definitely meet the Klingons again especially if you plan on watching all the movies, but they do look a bit different lol and you might notice a couple of very famous actors playing them.

Dean Holt

Well if its a poll we'll see but 2, 4 and 6 are my picks.

rakesh

One of the things I love is that the stories run the gamut. The four that were viewed are fairly "friendly" but there are some like Balance of Terror that are more tense and serious, and there are some like Charlie X and Return of the Archons that are really WEIRD and surprisingly scary. I hope you will continue revisiting the series. I know many of us patrons would enjoy going along for the ride.

BRT

There is really nothing really original in this series, lol, as much as I love it. In the 1950's to early sixties there was a TV show called Wagon Train about a group of settlers moving across country and each episode they would encounter different characters, towns, and situations. Endless story possibilities. When Gene Rodenberry pitched this series, he called it "Wagon Train to the stars". Endless story possibilities, but nothing really original, lol.

Mike LL

I just don't see Cassie "skipping" the first movie in a series. Our gal don't roll that way.

Mike LL

Thank you so much for giving Star Trek a chance! A sixty year old television show - this could have gone either way you know, lol. I loved rewatching these with you [and don’t take this the wrong way], with someone of your generation. I think many of us feel validated - “If Cassie likes it, maybe it actually was a great, timeless show.” 🤔 Thanks Again! Elated that you enjoyed it.

Ike

Many trekkie fans don't know that DeForest Kelley had a pretty good career in the westerns before Star Trek. He was great in Warlock with Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn.

Roger Freeman

Couldn’t agree more. I’m just always afraid to say it. lol

Ike

I’m hoping she just goes straight in with the second one. As the Motion Picture imo is the worst Trek film. Yes I even think it’s worse than the 5th one, it’s mainly because it’s just a heavenly flush out tv episode and feels like half the film is just shots of the crew and ship with the trek score playing.

Dean Holt

Yeah now I got the bug too, been bingeing this show all week. I'm sure I watched a lot of these episodes when I was a kid but just randomly whenever I would stay up later than I was supposed to. I remember my mom saying she used to love this show too (this and the Twilight Zone), and she told me my grandma had a big crush on Ricardo Montalban (Khan) lol, him and Cesar Romero (the Joker in the Batman TV show) because they were Latin, my grandma was Mexican and there weren't that many latins on American TV. Also, when you see the Klingons again in the movies you'll notice a very distinct change in their character design, their foreheads have big ridges, and I love how they dealt with that continuity error, kind of comically, in an episode of Deep Space 9 (my second favorite Star Trek series after Next Generation) where the crew is literally IN this episode and Warf, who is Klingon, just kind of dismisses the difference by saying something like, "It's a long story. We don't talk about it with outsiders."

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Hey! In watching your intro, I have to say that you need to remember that you're watching the remastered versions which have a lot of modern special effects added in, especially with the space scenes where you see exterior shots of the ship and of other planets.

Kevin Barberie

I know a lot of people really liked The Trouble with Tribbles, but even as a kid, I never liked it. There is at least one reference to them in the movies though,... I did enjoy seeing Cassie laugh at the pure silliness of the episode however. I do think it was good to show the byplay between the different characters. And yes, Beam me up Scotty is a reference to the Original Star Trek series. Scotty was the Chieft Engineering Officer and usually ran the transporters when other crew members didnt. As an Engineering officer in the show - he was supposed to be an engineering genius often obtaining better results than expected. As for Spock and Bones - they often sparred verbally. Space Seed will be an important episode to have watched so you have a reference later. One thing that no one has really mentioned is that the ST communicators was actually an inspiration for the modern day early flip phones. As always another great reaction,... By the way - Buzz Lightyear and Star Trek have nothing in common although it may have spoofed a little bit of ST just as Galaxy Quest did.

Also, it's been such a long time since I last watched the Tribbles episode, I can't believe I completely forgot that William Schallert was in it.

Stick Figure Studios

There is even more to that story. He was a lieutenant of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division and successfully led his men through the beach and is credited with taking out two German snipers. Later, after they secured their position, he has been shot 6 times by friendly fire. One took off his finger, four injured his leg, and one aimed at his chest was stopped by a cigarette case.

Gábor Árki

Awesome that you are connecting with these characters. I assume you are spacing the movies out. Maybe watch an episode in between movies or something to enhance the bonding experience.

Pickupthepieces76

I love that you laugh at the corniness. It brings me pleasure! Haha!

Philip Alan

"Directors Cut" all the way.

Stick Figure Studios

I am so pleased to see you getting to like these characters. The crew is a big part of the appeal of STAR TREK and the actors themselves do a phenomenal job portraying them. Theyr chemistry is palpable. The stories are good and they will continue to be good when you get to the movies (which, for me, is what TREK is really all about; those were my introduction to this universe as a youngster), but the production design and particularly the special effects are going to take a tremendous leap forward in the films. I cannot wait for you to see them. You'll hear more about opinions about them as you announce each one and I have plenty of my own, but I'll hold off on sharing them for now. I will only echo the sentiment that you watch the "Directors Edition" of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. It is the vastly superior version of the film .

Stick Figure Studios

"Casualty" means either killed or injured. James Doohan (Scotty) went ashore at Juno Beach on D-Day. He was injured in a friendly-fire incident, and lost a finger. I enjoy trying to spot it in these episodes.

Ben Livingstone

Most Star Trek shows are very character driven. Knowing how much Cassie can empathize with well written characters, this is what I was hoping for when recommending a couple of episodes to be watch first, before the movies. 🙂🖖 Cassie, if you do react to the first movie, THE MOTION PICTURE, I recommend watching the DIRECTOR'S EDITION. It is a much better version than the theatrical one. That was released in a hurry and had many flaws in the effects, sound, editing, etc. The director's cut fixes many of these problems, improves the pacing of the movie, polishes the editing throughout, and most importantly restores a key scene. It is the definitive version to watch.
