That is what is insidious about this movie is that people like you use the movie to push the incorrect assertions you make.

Government agencies lie to congress and have been caught doing so. Eric Holder was at the center of a scandal where congress was misinformed and he refused to hand over important evidence. And that was during the same presidential term as this movie. So, yeah, I think it is fair to say that it makes zero sense to trust government agencies to tell the truth. A report from these agencies is not evidence. It is heresay and wouldn't even be permitted in court.

Team Roy, by the way. Roy being a bad fit for Pam was not an excuse for Jim to kiss Roy's fiance. The more I've grown up, the more I've realized how much I dislike Jim. He's so disrespectful, invasive and selfish. I now love the episodes where Charles (Idris Elba) comes in and treats Jim like the childish jerk that he is.

I just listened to the first half, she is awesome. The "balls" on these people like Sarah who travel in and out of these countries and do this kind of work is incredible.
In the movie, the contractors say that even an unarmed overflight could have saved them by putting "the fear of God" in the attackers. After surveying expert judgment, the House report came to the opposite conclusion.
"Even if such planes could have been dispatched in a timely manner, it would have been extraordinarily difficult for pilots (even with night vision capability) to identify and overfly attackers in very low light," the report concluded. "The Benghazi attackers demonstrated that they were the sort of experienced fighters that ... might be less fearful of an unarmed overflight."

As for air support, according to the House Armed Services report, the planes in Italy "were configured for training flights." None of them, the report found, were ready to fly a combat mission. Getting them ready couldn't have been accomplished until after the attack was over.
The clear implication in the movie is that air support could have saved two lives but was held up by bureaucratic incompetence. "I called for air support," the officer says, stunned. "They never came."
This is, without a doubt, 100 percent made up. The House Armed Services report found that "the Department of Defense had no armed drones or manned aircraft prepared for combat readily available and nearby on September 11 [when the attack occurred]."

I think they thought they were told to wait.
The report by the House Intelligence Committee (led by Chairman Mike Rogers) said there was no stand-down order given. Mike Rogers (a soldier 1985-89) -- from east Alabama -- a conservative and a Christian, father of three, and married to his wife (Beth) for over 35 years.
Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs while serving in Iraq, stated:
“Committee, after committee, after committee has found that there was no stand-down order,” noting that Gen. Petraeus testified the same.
"[T]hree different committees have looked at this and have never found any evidence of any type of a stand-down order — period. There just wasn’t one.”

Let's talk theory
Do you really believe 2 ex SEALs, 3 former Marines and 1 ex Ranger would voluntarily WAIT while a US Ambassador and others are under attack in a place about a mile away from their annex. What were they doing if they were forbidden to go? Playing Video games? Surfing the web? You had one ex SEAL 400 miles away borrowing a jet just to get to his guys and get in the fight.

Every screenwriter and author worth their salt has read The Power of Myth at least once if not several times. Just a spectacular book. Campbell's work is seminal and his drawing together of archetypical symbols that are present in human cultures which never encountered each other or "bridge cultures" between them points to the fact that we are hard-wired for stories and certain iconic/subconscious images and standalone archetypes (example: there are some form of dragons in virtually every significant culture at all recorded points of human experience from Eurasia to the Americas to Africa, yet these cultures never mixed). Just amazing stuff. The TV series he did with Bill Moyers, while a bit simplistic and overly truncated, is worth a watch. Campbell is a master.

Also, these aren't documentaries. Even the most accurate dramatic portrayal takes such liberties - compressing action, composite characters, leaving out nuance etc. In this instance, the screenwriter and Bay are compressing days, and the last 13+ hours of the final day in country to 2.5 hours. Finally, there are real people in these incidents. Perhaps the hardest thing is to give them depth and build audience empathy for them. This film does that particularly well to the point where, if you don't feel like you know the key characters, you feel like you know enough about them to want them to survive the film.

The quote “All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells are within you” is from Joseph Campbell, author of the book “The Hero With A Thousand Faces”, which outlines the structure of a hero’s journey in storytelling.
His work influenced many creative artists including George Lucas, and Christopher Vogler, whose memo at Disney on “The Hero With A Thousand Faces” led to the creation of “Beauty And The Beast”, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King”.
In this film “Boon” reads the book “The Power Of Myth” which is an adaptation of a series of interviews about myth and its power with Joseph Campbell. This quote seems a reminder that the team is in a situation fraught with possibility and danger. And that they will soon need all their experience, wisdom, and grit to keep themselves and others safe.

Rick, respectively, no armed air support was available for an order to be given.
No matter what the heroes on the ground thought, no stand-down order was given -- that is based on more than the testimony of a CIA official.

"The Outpost" is right up there in my estimation with this with a last 90 minutes that are an adrenaline-soaked non-stop engagement. Recounts an actual battle in an indefensible position where American forces are completely outnumbered. The director, Rod Lurie, is also an Army vet.

It's also accurate as it gets on the chaos of being on the ground in a real-time engagement where everyone is a potential enemy combatant and that awful snapping sound of rounds hitting danger close is a constant. Until it isn't. And then it is again.

On the one hand you have the testimony of a CIA official who has every reason to say there was no stand down order to protect his career. Then on the other hand you have the testimony of several ex-military who were there protecting the civilian government workers who have nothing to gain by lying. No armed air support was available because the order was never given to send any.

This film is inaccurate- there was no stand down order given, no armed air support was available, and there was nothing effective the US government could have done that night.
The film is accurate in portraying how difficult to secure US officials in a dangerous environment, and how for the hero contractors, it was impossible to create a safe environment for the ambassador or CIA officers.

Just think through the issue. 2 Seals, 1 Ranger and 3 Marines WAITED over 25 minutes to aid the US Ambassador and staff. They WAITED on their own. We're they sleeping? Playing Video games, watching movies? What was the reason for them delaying 20 + minutes before leaving the annex.

It might also be something worth mentioning that the station chief “Bob”, in the movie, was actually a mash-up of two different people. There was a “Bob”, but also a GRS team leader who was there coordinating between “Bob” and the operators. Could have been either of them that may have said to “stand down”, but in all the chaos, I don’t doubt that a lot was probably said in the confusion.
I don’t believe the real “Bob” was all that innocent though, as it was revealed in a recent interview with a former CIA targeter, named Sarah Adams, who worked in Benghazi there at the annex (her and the real Boon have been investigating the attack on their own time and dollar to identify individuals responsible for the attack), that when Bob initially called the Feb 17 commander for help, the commander refused to send anyone. So he basically lied to the GRS operators the whole time that Feb 17 was going to help in any capacity.
The interview is a two part podcast on the Shawn Ryan Show on YouTube. There is also a interview from last month, with the real Oz where he recounts the incident. Sarah Adams also revealed that while the attack was taking place, the president, was apparently busy meeting Beyoncé and Jay-Z…

But that was a good movie, while maybe a tiny bit melodramatic. Combat scenes were really cool. Quite reminiscent of BLACKHAWK DOWN, which is a better film IMO. But that's Ridley Scott vs Michael Bay, what would you expect. This was better than I expected and Bay did very well here.

The CIA station chief said he told them to wait, because he was trying to coordinate with the local militia (Feb 17th). This seems like a situation where both sides could be correct, since serially telling someone to wait could involve multiple instances of telling them to stand-down until he thought they were ready to be supported. They eventually did go, but by then it was too late for the ambassador. Frankly, I'm not sure a stand-down order would have been wrong in that situation - he was responsible for over two dozen people and a lot of special equipment and records, he would want to be sure his top security personnel weren't being lured out into an ambush either at the other site or along the way there. As it was, they arrived after the first wave of attackers had left, who knows how the night would have unfolded if they had gotten there mid-attack - maybe better, maybe worse for us. The bigger question was why the lack of response - the official investigation found that there was no stand-down order issued to the military forces available to respond but did not address why there were no contingencies ready in such a heightened threat level. The interesting thing about the movie is that it doesn't really point fingers about the failure to respond. It basically shows the military biding options while they gathered more information, and it pays brief note to the initial reports that this was not a terrorist attack but a demonstration (about a youtube video, IIRC) that got out of hand. Michael Bay rightly gets credit for focusing on the effects of any of the decisions up to and during the attack on the people there who had to deal with the consequences, rather than the causes for why the situation was what it was (and I couldn't agree more about Pearl Harbor), which makes this movie such a stand-out.

(1) Contrary to the movie, no stand-down order was given.
(2) Contrary to the movie, no armed air support was available.
(3) Contrary to the implication in the movie, there was nothing effective the US government could have done that night.
Positives:
(1) The movie does an exceptional job at portraying how difficult to secure US officials in a dangerous environment, and how from the perspective of the hero contractors, it was impossible to create a safe environment for the ambassador or CIA officers.
(2) The movie does an admirable job humanizing the Libyans.

But, why was help not sent from Italy? The title tells you all you need to know, 13 hours. There could have been armed aircraft overhead in a couple of hours. There were drones overhead. Were they armed? Sicily is 500 miles north. Aviano Air Base is a little over 1,000 miles north. Help could have been sent.

Great job Cassie. The true stories are always the hardest. Those were real people fighting for their lives. And some died. It was a bad move the ambassador going there with just two body guards. You don't send or let a person like that go into a dangerous area like that. He became target number 1. And then once it hit the fan you just don't sit there watching it go down from a drone. You send help. There was help only a couple hours away in Italy. But, no help was sent. There were drones overhead. Armed drones could have been used to provide some fire power.

I feel one of the things they got right was the comradery between everyone. We use humor so we don't just break down. It's part of why some veterans have a hard time adjusting to civilian life. Just remember. This is a movie meant to entertain you. NOT a documentary. This movie is based (loosely) on a book. One very important thing to remember is the CIA Chief testified under oath he never told anyone to stand down. I assume it was put in for drama. It sucks that in today's world we have to rely on private contracting for security. These guys probably made close to $150,000 a year being a security contractor. We lost so many good guys in the military because of the massive paydays these guys get. They take the same risks we do, but get paid well over 150k?? Sign me up! The whole situation over there was about as messed up as possible. We couldn't fly in air support or troops because 1. It's a long way from any air base and very short notice. 2. Libya was and is a failed state. Every bad guy with a ground to air missile launcher would be shooting at any aircraft entering Libya. It's a great movie, but Michael Bay directed it and isn't exactly known for his historically accurate movies. I'm looking at you 2001 Pearl Harbor...

Sure but which is the greater disservice, embellishing and/or changing the facts of the story for whatever reason, or not telling any story and letting those men's sacrifice go unsung? I don't know.. maybe we shouldn't say anything if we're not going to be 100 percent truthful about all aspects of a story. I have not seen the movie, nor do I know anything about the facts behind this event. I just notice your comment about this being inaccurate. This is one of my pet peeves about these Based on True Events movies. Why do they feel the need to change some of the details? If the story is fascinating enough to have made a movie about it, then why the need to change some of the details? Surely it does a dis service to the actual people and to the events as they happened? It feels like rewriting history. I have never understood it.

I’ve always wondered if the real guys had watched The Office before, possibly even while they were in Benghazi on down time, and if they could ever had imagined that Jim and Roy would be playing them in a movie one day.

This movie always gets me... I don't know why people get upset about this movie. I know they say its propaganda and its not accurate but then so is most every war movie ever made. If you're watching this and taking something political away from it then you completely missed the point. It's not about politics, it's about the men who served and died in some far away place doing what they could to help their country. If you're reading anything else into it.. left or right.. then you're doing those men who gave their blood, their sweat, and their very lives to protect americans in a hostile place a huge disservice. Just my humble opinion as an army veteran and an american.

First, I would love to say Cassie, from both me and my wife, thank you for being a kind, empathetic soul.
Second, to all of my brothers and sisters who have served, past and present, American or allied, thank you for the sacrifices you made.
Finally, I know that there is controversy around this movie for a number of reasons. The biggest being why no American support arrived. What I will say is this. Without an absolute doubt. Those men who were on the ground and had to hold the line, they are heroes. Rest Easy to Glen, Rone, Sean, and Chris.

Few seem to watch this one although until recently it wasn't really available widely on streaming services being on more niche paramount. On an outside note. The actor for Glen (Tobie Stevens) is spectacular in Black Sails, I know you don't do series but would be worth it and it's relatively short. 4 seasons averaging 10 episodes each.

I am so excited to watch this reaction later tonight! As an unapologetic fan of Michael Bay (I adore Armageddon, The Rock, Transformers), this film is on another level for Bay as a filmmaker. You can tell he truly respected the material he was adapting for the screen.

Maybe once other reactors see PiB reacting to it, some of them will check it out. I've seen trends like that.

What I take most out of this movie/story is 6 guys (later a 7th) who all risked their lives for American citizens they barely knew. The guy I am most impressed with is Glen Doherty. He was about 400 miles away when this attack happened. Yet, he led the way in stealing/borrowing/hijacking whatever you want to call it, a private just to get to Benghazi to help his team out.
All I can say is read the book. The book was written by Mitchell Zuckoff, NY Times best selling author and Boston Globe reporter.

Having been shot at, this one was as real as it gets. I think it's Michael Bay's best work. Should've received multiple Oscar noms. Just a great piece of film-making that makes viewers feel the chaos and fear of being in this kind of battle. Brave watch, Cassie - thank you!

Looking forward to watching this tonight! John Krasinski was fantastic! I listened to some of the interviews from the operators that were there. Really breaks your heart for what they had to go through.
Edit: Loved this reaction! Thanks for doing this movie! Here’s some historical tie ins… Gaddafi was the man responsible for the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident where two Libyan Su-22 aircraft fired upon two U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcats. The F-14s shot down both Libyan aircraft. This fight was part of the inspiration for the Top Gun movie.
