The Abyss (1989) Special Edition - Full Reaction
Added 2023-09-03 08:35:28 +0000 UTC
This one has been requested many times over the past few years! I don't want to spoil too much about the reaction, so you'll have to check it out! I'm glad Carly was able to watch this with me. I know there was a lot of debate on which version to watch, but the general consensus seemed to be that both were great but the Special edition was a favorite? Unfortunately this isn't streaming or able to be rented anywhere, hopefully that changes soon!! Also, there were some technical issues so sorry about the loudness, hopefully it's bearable :) You guys are the best!!
Direct link in case the above player doesn't work.
Find your own copy to follow a long with.
Download this full reaction.
You can currently rent or buy this edition on youtube. I bought it for 14.99... I think rental was 3.99. Just in case anyone is still searching for it.

The digital version of the Special Edition is now available from Amazon Prime Video for purchase at $19.99. Rent not available.
https://www.amazon.com/Abyss-Special-Ed-Harris/dp/B0CGPKH1HY/ref=tmm_aiv_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
The DVD of the Special Edition on Amazon is $9.99, but I don't buy DVDs (or blu ray).
I can stream for free on Hulu, but not the Special Edition. I was looking forward to watching this movie with her reaction, but not sure the $19.99 is worth it.

This movie was finally available for purchase digitally starting January 1st. This movie as well as James Cameron’s True Lies. These two movies were never sold in a Blue Ray format either. I purchased them both on iTunes a couple weeks ago.

This is my second time watching it. The Abyss is a great looking movie with a bunch of uninteresting characters (they try to make them colorful) and a bubble gum story. So I can see why it was a financial failure. And that final act with the aliens was just cringe.

You should definitely watch the making of for this movie. Like many people have said, it almost ended the career of James Cameron, and he almost killed Ed Harris with the weird water breathing suit. It malfunctioned and he almost suffocated.
Not see this movie for a long time, because it’s not been available on DVD, Blu Ray or Streaming for many many years. But I hear JC is working on a remaster and a re release in time for an anniversary

They weren't Marines though they were Navy SEALS. I saw this movie in high school immediately after I talked my parents into putting me in a local Scuba class to get certified. James Cameron as you both are finding out knows how to write and direct incredible films. However, not sure if you know this but he is also very big in deep sea exploration. His wife once said he makes films to fund his deep sea hobbies. He actually dove in a submersible(Called DeepSea Challenger) that he had built for him to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, called Challenger Deep, the deepest known point on earth, He spent 3 hours at the bottom being the first person to ever doing that solo. he also discovered new species while there. There's a really great documentary that he did on this including the actual dive called: Deep Sea Challenge.. It's incredible and I believe available on Prime Video.

Finally got the Special Edition DVD delivered and just finished watching it. I do think I like the ending of the Theatrical release a bit more, as it leaves some things up for interpretation. I had forgotten just how intense this movie is!
This is one of my all time favorite movies - it's what got me into SCUBA diving many years ago. So glad you guys enjoyed it!
BTW - The oxygenated fluorocarbon is very much a real thing. The rat in that scene was actually breathing it (Ed Harris, not so much).

I hope you enjoyed this one. I can't tell since you didn't really say at the end if you loved the movie or not. You two just mentioned aspects of the film and then talked about some special effects you didn't like. By the way, not all modern effects are better.
There is a bit of conflicting tone with this movie, with like 90% of the movie being an edgy survival drama, and 10% being an alien fantasy. I think a more realistic and gritty design for the underwater aliens would have helped with the conflicting tone. But instead we have rainbow stingrays, which do not fit the tone of the rest of the movie.
But I love the overall message of the film, and it's more topical than ever since we still have countries with nuclear weapons that are at odds with each other.

Well, I was finally able to track down a copy of the movie. Excellent reaction ladies!
I’m glad you realized Ed Harris wasn’t in Crimson Tide Cassie! 😂 Though I was a little surprised you knew Micheal Biehn (Kyle Reese in Terminator) was in The Rock. But you didn’t say Ed Harris was the General in it!
The reason you need to decompress when going from one depth to another is Nitrogen gets dissolved into the blood as the pressure increases. If you don’t properly decompress, the nitrogen gets released suddenly, bubbling in your bloodstream causing a condition called “The Bends”. Which can lead to death.
They stated in the film they would have to decompress for two weeks when going back up to the surface. Which is why they couldn’t just put on suits or get in a submersible and head for the surface.
I haven’t seen this film in many years. I really enjoyed watching it again along with you guys!

It’s very refreshing to see two people have a civilised conversation for once instead of not understanding two people can and do have different options. Personally I like the movie and enjoyed watching it again after not seeing it in such a long time but both Terminators, Aliens & True Lies are better movies imo. But I’d but it above Titanic and the two Smurf movies lol.

It appears that the PAL release (Spec Ed) is different to the (Presumably NTSC) one you've watched. It's not a frame rate issue. The scene order is completely different on my disc from about 32 minutes in. On top of that, it's so 'blue' that it's hard to sync properly anyway. Anyone know which version I should, erm, search for to find the one in the reaction?
Edit. It's fine from 45 minutes or so. Weird.

It's about the potential within all human beings for both good and evil. Right now we're seeing a lot of the latter in practice and if we are not careful, we will end up destroying ourselves and/or our home. It's an uncomfortable truth, but one humanity needs to face before it's too late. Fortunately, this film (like.most of Cameron's work) is ultimately a hopeful one.

I use "thriller" to describe it because that what it is. That is it's category: sci-fi action/drama/thriller. Whether you like/don't like to or find it "thrilling" or not doesn't change that. As for my "monologue" (and don't worry, I won't do another one). I was just trying to open your mind to other ways to approach films so that maybe you wouldn't be as disappointed in it because of something that's not really the movie's fault. Sorry I wasted both your time and mine.

So I have been scuba diving but absolutely nowhere this deep. I saw a whale shark off the coast of Hawaii and was not allowed to go. I am a beginner Scuba diver. This was science fiction. James Cameron has made it farther then any man in a machine he built himself. We don't have suits that can go down that far.

There was a small moment, I think you Girls may have missed, that is one of my favorites. After Cat and Sonny save Bud from drowning behind the door that Bud had his fingers stuck in, Bud kisses his Wedding Ring with a loud "Muuaaaw." If he hadn't reached into that toilet to get his wedding ring back, his fingers would have been cut off and he would have died. "Muuaaaw" indeed.
Something to remember ya'll probably realized already... Rat in Zip-Lock Bag = Rat that Floats.
Cassie recognized Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio from The Perfect Storm... but NOBODY has brought up yet that she was Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which Cassie loved. Come on ya'll. ;-)
This was a very Fun Film and a Fun Reaction. Also very Intense. The CPR scene is one the most intense moments I've ever seen on film. Everytime I relive it like the first time, and I am in massive Tears. You really feel the Slaps. Seeing Cat get there just in time to release the Hammer... Another of my favorite moments.
I Highly Recommend watching the Making of Documentary, Under Pressure, that Gabor gave a link to earlier. Some very Real Stuff went on. It was definitely an experience that All Cast & Crew will never forget.
I only wish that ya'll had a better copy of the film, other than the ancient DVD that I assume ya'll watched.
Everyone keeps complaining about The Abyss not being on Blu-ray, and I'm with ya'll. It is pretty ridiculous that The Abyss or True Lies have not found their way on to Blu-ray yet. They never even got an updated DVD release. James Cameron is known to be obsessive, and in my opinion, he has gotten too obsessed with Avatar, and forgotten about his past Catalogue. I hope these films won't be a financial disaster for him, in the long run. Especially since the last two sequels release dates have been pushed to 2029 and 2031.
You Girls were talking about James Cameron "liking" the water. I was reminded of a cameo scene Cameron did in, The Muse (1999), an Albert Brooks comedy, about a "Muse" who makes her rounds inspiring filmmakers in Hollywood. I hope this scene was not Foreshadowing or a Warning Missed.

Last, but not least. The Abyss featured one of the most Sing-A-Longable Road songs ever. "Willin'" written by Lowell George and originally performed by his band, Little Feat. Maybe more recognized as a Linda Ronstadt song, which she covered, and I believe was the version heard in the movie.
Here is Linda Ronstadt, the Most Beautiful Voice Ever, performing Live for everyone...

In the theatrical cut, they cut out the plotline of the aliens threatening the Earth with water before changing their mind. Harris just wakes up in their ship, they play the "I love you" message and bring him up out of the kindness of their hearts. Notebly less impactful IMO

Everyone was peeing in their wetsuits, that was normal. Mary Elizabeth did have her scene out of a wetsuit, being carried by Ed Harris. She may have been told to pee in the water then, but I’ve never heard that anywhere.
Mary Elizabeth saying “We’re not animals!” and walking off set was during the CPR scene, which they did A Lot of takes. But on one particular take, which all the actors knew was going perfectly, right at the end, the cameraman interrupted and said he was out of film.
I wonder if that inspired a scene in True Lies.

What a ride! It was great rewatching this movie with you. I was so hyped up after the live that I was afraid the reaction wouldn't live up to my expectations, but it did not disappoint. On the contrary, it definitely ranks high on my list of most favorite reactions. I loved how this movie kept you on the edge of your seat, shocked you, left you in awe and surprised you multiple times. I think one of Cassie's tells of being really immersed and enjoying a movie is when she starts leaning forward and I saw it a lot.
Poor Viggo, I can't believe Cassie made the same mistake twice confusing him with Ed Harris. 😄 But I'm impressed that she knew Michael Biehn right away, because I think he is not that easy to recognize here. He did a terrific job, and his psychotic performance is probably the most haunting aspect of the movie and may be his best performance. Also, kudos to all the actors, cast and crew in the "I survived The Abyss" club.
Water and the ocean have always captivated Cameron's imagination. He started writing this story when he was a teenager, I believe. Besides THE ABYSS, he also performed like a dozen deep sea dives to the Titanic and all the shots you can see from the wreck in the movie have been made during those. He also did two underwater documentaries, GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS from the Titanic with Bill Paxton, and EXPEDITION BISMARCK about a famous WW2 German battleship, and did a deep sea dive into the Mariana trench, the deepest oceanic trench on Earth. And of course, he led the development of an underwater motion capture photography system for AVATAR 2.
Cassie, now that you've seen almost all James Cameron movies (Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2, True Lies on the channel; Titanic, Avatar off channel), which were your favorites?

I hope so. But I've been hoping for so long now. Both would be instant buy for me despite the hefty price.
(I'm now limited to importing because of a dying local physical media market, that more than doubles the price for a US or UK import due to shipping and VAT. Sadly, Disney quit in 2016, no more Fox releases either since Disney bought them, Universal quit in 2022, Sony and Warner in 2023. Only Paramount is left and probably not for long. 😔)

@Stick Figure Studios LOL, I should’ve expected one of your monologues. The title and my expectations weren’t the only issues. It just wasn’t that exciting, and I’m not the only one who thinks that. Personally speaking, whenever I approach a movie (or any work of art) there are three questions I ask myself that I find helpful in attempting to best understand/appreciate the work (these come from the famous poet/playwright/theatre critic Johann Wolfgang von Goethe).
1. What was the artist trying to achieve?
2. Did they achieve it?
3. Was it worth doing?
Stick Figure Studios
2023-09-03 16:32:18 +0000 UTC
You'd be forgiven for thinking it, of course, but not for continuing ng to blame the film for not being what you imagined. That's not the movie's problem. That's a "you" problem. A good movie-watcher has to be open to the experience that a film wants to provide them with (one of the things I love about Cassie is that she goes into movies very open-minded). In this case, Cameron wasn't interested in making a "scary monster movie" but an intense underwater sci-fi action/thriller/love story. Nothing wrong with that. Even the name "The Abyss" doesn't itself suggest anything monstrous (an abyss is just a massive void, a space). If the title had been something like "Leviathan" or "Alien" and there had been no monster, that I could understand being disappointed by. As it is, I don't think this is a case of a movie and/or it's publicity being misleading, but of imposing misguided expectations on it. I sometimes think that incorrect expectations are responsible for more disappointment in good movies than anything else.

I saw this theatrically back in 1989 and thought it was a great film with a weak ending. Doing some research into it, I read about what was cut out for the theatrical release and was like 'hey, I want to see THAT ending.' When the special edition came out a few years later and finished the ending, it turned a great film with a weak ending into a fantastic film.
Since you obviously have a physical copy of the film, I highly recommend watching the making-of documentary. This was a notoriously difficult film to produce.

I think the peeing part was a reasonable request. If I remember correctly, they had to do some decompression steps when leaving the tank they shot in. So, going out, removing the suit, then suiting up again and going down would have meant a lot of downtime for everyone else.
Then again it was a daunting experience for everyone. Cameron is usually pushing his actors to the limits and then some. I think the scene where Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio snapped and walked off set was the CPR, where she has been lying on the cold floor soaking wet with a ripped shirt and Ed Harris bouncing on her chest and slapping her for hours, and Cameron asking for take after take. She refuses to talk about the movie too.

7 years now. A 4K transfer has been confirmed by several people, including Cameron himself back in 2016 and even before that a new HD transfer has been allegedly prepared around 2008-2010. Neither of them were ever released on physical or any digital platform, apart from some HDTV screenings.
There are indeed more rumors than ever for the past 1-2 years, but it is September now and still no announcement has been made.

The making of this movie is as interesting as the movie itself. They filmed this in an unused nuclear power plant and filled it up with water in order to film the entire movie underwater. Chemical bruns, the set breaking needing dam builders to fix it. People almost drowning ed Harris having a full on breakdown and a lot more problems made this shoot an infamous one in the history of Hollywood.

Totally Armageddon vibes. Even though Deep Impact was the Way Better Movie, I still like Armageddon, for this reason. Seeing a bunch of Roughnecks, who most people look at and think they're just dumb grunts, get the chance to prove themselves and save the world. I work with guys like this everyday.

It's not an ethical question. It is stealing pure and simple. The movie is available to purchase, and at a reasonable cost. You know this, that is why you are trying to justify it with "renting True Lies or Avatar which I already own", but that doesn't get the money to the people who should get it, it is just a way to clear your conscience.
That said, I would have no problem pirating it, or any movie not (edit-having) some kind of digital or "not terrible transfer" sale.

@Stick Figure Studios Sure but after all, it is James Cameron coming off of The Terminator and Aliens. And with a title like 'The Abyss', you'd be forgiven for thinking that there would at least be some scary element in this. Yet there was none of that.

@Michael Lynch I didn't say it was bad. It's definitely more on the overrated, slightly boring side. It is emotional.. to a fault, I'd say. The back and forth between Bud and the aliens, and them showing him the letter.. straight up corny IMO.
Admittedly, it's been a while since I last saw it, so I don't remember everything. But what was "on the edge of your seat" about this? I remember it to be pretty uneventful.

the production team were all suffering horrific conditions without exaggeration. only the force of will of james cameron kept this thing afloat (badumtis). in particular, mary elizabeth mastrantonio physical challenges during the resuscitation scene bordered on abuse. even how grueling the conditions were, to cameron's credit he kept everyone safe. it is still a great feat of filmmaking and far from a bad movie.

I've heard James Cameron was and is the biggest dick to work for. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio said that while the were filming in the water if they had to pee Cameron would make them just pee in the water. She finally blew up at him and screamed, "We are not animals!!", and stormed off set.

Ok okay ok. Did you know James Cameron has made $62,659,277,645.45 (at the end of it all) off of The Abyss since its release all over the world in 1989, across all continents, from Europe to (Ru)ssia to the Americas. Ok, I may have inflated that amount a bit, but it looks a little better in my opinion. I mean, between all the slashes and hacking of it’s gross worth, there’s a great “video” to show still.
Larry Darrell
2023-09-03 12:23:24 +0000 UTC
Ok. Did you know that when filming The Abyss, James Cameron shot so much feet of film, that the (ru)ntime of the Slashed raw VIDEO added up to a total of Slashed 6,265,927,764,545 seconds, before being put together the right way. That’s some High Quality filmmaking, right there.
Seriously, but not Seriously. Ok.
Larry Darrell
2023-09-03 12:22:28 +0000 UTC
On the FilmSITE, where James Cameron shot The Abyss, near OK Point, South Carolina, (ru)nning water RIPped through giant water hoses (this is all detailed on a great behind the scenes VIDEO more accurately) which HACKed through the landscape, filling a couple water tanks with not approximately but assuredly, 6,265,927,764,545 gallons of water.
Also seriously, but not seriously, if John Milius or even James Cameron wanted to make Red Dawn 2: We Take the Fight to Them, and they wanted to film in Russia, I think it would be a fairly Safe filmSite. I’ve had no problems scouting locations there, myself. No land mines whatsoever. No Torrential downpours.

I don't see an ethical dilemma. If they won't provide a reasonably priced, easy to access option it is their loss.
IMHO renting a different movie would not support the people who worked on this one. It would also mislead the studio about the preferences of the audience. The best way to show your appreciation and demand for the movie is to watch it or buy it if (or when) it becomes available again. Only this would benefit the actual creators with the royalties and send the proper signals to the studio.

Well that's totally bogus, I can't rent it anywhere on either YT or Amazon Prime! Well, looks like I'm just gonna have to wait for the YT edit of this reaction, which is really a bummer, I really wanted to watch this full length reaction! I haven't seen this movie in years, since some on here are giving you fun facts and trivia, you know that breathable liquid that's in this, it is real! How I know is because that same breathable liquid, according to the doctor who spoke to my father, was the same breathable liquid that saved my life when I was 4 years old when I had my first breathing attack in my sleep because of my asthma, crazy stuff! Anyway, I hope someday I can watch the full length, for now I'm content with the YT edit eventually! Hope you and Carly enjoyed watching it, despite I'm sure this movie gave the both of you a bad case of claustrophobia in a few scenes and same with thalasophobia (fear of deep water) lol! Have a happy Sunday, love and support, [virtual hug] God bless you, Carly, and your family! P.S. it's September my birthday month, and in 20 days I'll be turning 35, whoa lol! Love and support🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

I have an ethical question for you guys. There is no streaming version of this movie, and as far as I can tell, there's no good reason why Cameron/production company doesn't have a rentable version available. Pigeonholing the consumer into purchasing a $20 DVD that I don't want in this digital age is unreasonable in my opinion. What do you think about downloading the torrented version and giving Cameron/20th century fox some money by renting True Lies or Avatar which I already own as a workaround?

Looks like this may be an unpopular opinion on here but I couldn't stand the special edition's humans bad, must save planet subplot when I first saw it. Takes away the simplicity and mystery of the original version. I liked not knowing why they were here. Adds corny dialog between Virgil and the aliens and the whole sequence feels slapped on and unfinished. That being said, I've been waiting for this reaction for a long time so I'll give this edition another chance, maybe it'll land better this time around.

I am so excited. This is definitely one of my favorite movies. James Cameron is just amazing. So glad Carly got to watch this with you. I remember that scene where they were trapped in that sub, and they have to swim back to base had me on the edge of my seat in the theater so long ago. Hmm, neither version is available is Australia. This has been an issue with a number of Cameron films. I think it has to do with Fox using local distributors and Disney being it’s normal charming self. Apple thinks I should watch Sunshine instead which is never a bad idea.

I can't believe it's finally here! I've been waiting for this moment for so long. It has been in my personal top 10 requested movies for a long time.
I'm so glad you decided to watch the longer cut. I have seen the theatrical first in TV and thought it was an okay movie. But it was the Special Edition cut that made me fell in love with it and consider this cut to be one of, if not the best movies of Cameron. The SE version is actually much closer to his original vision but at the time of its release the consensus was that movies longer than 2 hours don't have a chance at box office. So, the studio insisted on a shorter cut, and he also agreed and trimmed it down as much as he could. But the movie was still a financial flop regardless.
The SE restores many scenes that were cut for the theatrical version, which enrich the story and the characters. For example, Bud and Lindsey's relationship is more developed and nuanced, and the crew members have more interactions and personalities that make them feel like a real team. Some of them also have more significant roles in the plot, instead of being just background characters. It also restores a whole subplot about the cold war tensions. This aspect was largely cut from the theatrical version, but it is essential to understand the motivations and actions of the characters, as well as the significance of the NTI storyline which has been heavily reduced to simply them being there. I think without these, the ending of the theatrical cut just lacks any emotional impact or resolution.
If you are interested in the behind-the-scenes challenges, you should check out UNDER PRESSURE: THE MAKING OF THE ABYSS. This hour-long documentary reveals how the crew faced unprecedented difficulties and dangers while shooting underwater. The making of this movie is a fascinating story of its own and was one of the most ambitious and demanding movies ever made.
I think it is featured on the DVD release, but here is a YT version: https://youtu.be/YctOKgWVn9E

Yeah, I gotta skip this one. One of the most disappointing movies I've seen. It sold me dreams, mostly because of its name. 'The Abyss' is one of the coldest titles ever. I will never forget seeing this in the theater at age 12 with no idea whatsoever of what to expect. I was blown away. The claustrophobia, the tension, the emotion, the special effects (it's difficult to articulate just how mind-blowing that water tentacle was at the time; one of the first photo-realistic CGI effects ever used in a movie). I loved it... and then years later I saw the special edition and loved it even more. It's a vastly superior product. This was my first James Cameron film (and, for my money it's still his best work) as well as my introduction to Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. THE ABYSS is one of my all-time favorite films and I've been wanting a reaction to it since I first discovered this channel. I predict you both loved it (I'm so glad Carly joined you).
