Runaway Jury (2003) - Full Reaction

I couldn't get away from the courtroom! I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately but we really loved this one!! It was so entertaining and connective and smart! I need to see everything Gene Hackman has ever done now.

Runaway Jury (2003) - Full Reaction

Comments

And another connection from Definitely, Maybe (2008), the bad guy that burned Cusack's apartment was the guy running for governor in the Ryan Reynolds rom-com.

crazyivan

No you cannot sue the hammer company when the hammer is used improperly.

PennyFlowers

The beginning you Canadians crack me up.. Isn't a jury summons like a fairy tale thing ha.. I get called nearly every other year. If you pay taxes and a registered voter you're time will come... And Rachel Weisz I knew her most from the Mummy, Enemy at the Gates and this movie, but anymore I think most people know her cause she's married to James Bond( Daniel Craig).

Ryan Towell

Serendipity is my favorite Cusack movie. Full disclosure, I'm still really mainly there for Kate. My heavens, I love that woman.

David Collins

I was so happy to see you all playing this that I finally had to become a patron. I love courtroom movies, and when I saw the last three films, I knew it was time. The Rainmaker, Anatomy of a Murder, 12 Angry Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird. All are great and some of my favorites. You all might have seen Anatomy of a Murder; that sticks in my mind for some reason.

Eddie Perkins

Papillon (1973) great movie and true

Eddie Perkins

Rachel Weisz was in a fabulous movie called Denial (2016) based on a true story where she takes on a Holocaust Denier

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

I want to thank you for doing this channel and for yours and Carly's time. Whenever you drop a new review, I tell my ex-wife I have a date night with two gorgeous blonds to watch a movie. The first time I told her this, she gave me a skeptical side eye glare. Loved it. Love you both, mean it. Matt

Matt Mabry

hahaha i forgot about that!

Cassie

haha we knew it is real, it just seems like one of those things you hear about but never actually see!

Cassie

no way!!! wow!

Cassie

I'm sure I'll watch this eventually, and I'm sure the reaction will be great, but right now I'm a little tapped out on jury stuff since I just did a month and a half on a jury trial for a bloody and gruesome double homicide. I'm looking forward to kindergarten Cop!!!😂🤣👍🏻

'Pappy' Johnston

Right, "Rene has never been sexier. ", I always like her. I hope they get too Lethal Weapon 4 soon!

Greggory Shaw

And a jury of your peers is so false, every professional type finds a way not to serve on a jury :(

Greggory Shaw

They really need to watch Red Dawn!

Greggory Shaw

"John Cusack - he's the guy from Serendipity" may be the most triggering thing I've ever heard. It's like saying "Anthony Hopkins - the guy from Mission Impossible 2" lol

Odd Thomas

Grosse Point Blank is my favourite Cusack movie! Highly recommend!

Odd Thomas

All these courtroom movies but you haven't watched JFK with Kevin Costner, which is pretty much the daddy of courtroom movies!

Odd Thomas

Cassie, I have been put in the jury pool 5 times over the years, and never selected. I am not at all someone any lawyer wants on a jury 😂. Not all cases get one of these jury selection experts... They are expensive. Just for expensive or high profile cases. Also, I was a private investigator from 1991-1993, and mostly did divorce cases, and workers comp cases. Lots of spy work 🙄 and I could find out a lot of info about people in a relatively short time. The Internet has made all that elementary these days...

Jon Johns

This is such an astute comment Cole.

Jon Johns

I think James Bond has a crush on her too 😂😉

Jon Johns

Cassie would enjoy GPB, but would she like it more after watching another of his 1980's 'high school' rom coms?

Jon Johns

I agree, but I have a question, do you subscribe to the idea that Enemy of the State is an unofficial sequel to The Conversation?

Jon Johns

Just hoping that you would watch this one, Grosse Point Blank next ;) ??? Have you ever been to New Orleans, great place to visit!

Greggory Shaw

Fun Fact, Hoffman and Hackman were roommates when attending actors school, and this was the first movie they acted together in

rtt143

I you love Gene Hackman then you should definitely watch „The Birdcage“ and „Heartbrakers“, where he also shows his comedic side. They are both very funny!

Steve Arnold

If you Love Hackman, check out “The Conversation “……. It’s brilliant and his best film in my opinion. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and nominated for best picture!

Eric Galdes

She has talked about seeing it Shawn

Cole Jennett

Hoosiers isn't in Cassie's Letterboxd as a movie she's seen

Shawn Kildal

They are too sweet and innocent for Wild Things but it would be awesome lol

Priscila

Curious… since Carly watched this with Cassie, does that mean She didn’t watch Red Dawn? That would be a great film for them to watch together. It’s a Family/Sibling Film. Also the ultimate “What would you do?” Conversation.

Larry Darrell

I completely forgot about Narrow Margin, even though I own the dvd. Like No Way Out, a really good suspense movie.

Kirk & Dawn VanWinkle

Cassie, if you like court room dramas try On The Basis Of Sex (2018) about the early life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Or for a court room drama that's a little spicier try Wild Things (1998) with Bill Murray, Kevin Bacon and Neve Campbell.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

She’s seen Hoosiers.

Tim Raths

aw look a dummy who doesnt understand why we have a second amendment. its ok im sure you make up for your stupidity with misplaced self righteousness. tell us again how people you dont like have 'little dicks' im sure thats very convincing. maybe you can also call people who are more informed than you 'fat' that sounds like a good plan.

rubberkidney

I don't think any has mentioned Hoosiers with Gene Hackman. A sports movie that would check all of Cassie's boxes. A little-known movie he was in that I saw in the theaters was Narrow Margin (1990). Really enjoyed that one. He was also in another Courtroom drama in Class Action. As far as Dustin Hoffman goes, I'll stand on rooftops praising Kramer vs. Kramer and Finding Neverland.

Shawn Kildal

Another great Cusack film....1408! "It's an evil ----ing room."

Jacob Colson

I would have preferred they kept Big Tobacco as the defendant, like in the Novel. The Lawsuit in the film didn't make a lot of sense to me. They hardly spent anytime on the facts of the case, which didn't help. With a Hot Button issue like this, I felt they could have tried a little harder to try and sway the viewing audience to the side of the plaintiff. I know the main focus of the film was the Jury tampering and swinging, but if you didn't believe the plaintiff's case was solid, then the final verdict doesn't feel very comfortable. In the End, it seemed like the verdict was purely based on the Emotions of the Jurors. This is the complete opposite of the lessons learned in 12 Angry Men, which I thought were pretty good. Recommendations... John Cusack The Sure Thing (1985) Eight Men Out (1988) Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) Gene Hackman The Poseidon Adventure (1972) The Conversation (1974) The Birdcage (1996) Dustin Hoffman (I just couldn't narrow it to 3. I really tried) Little Big Man (1970) Papillon (1973) All the President's Men (1976) Marathon Man (1976) Kramer vs Kramer (1979) Tootsie (1982) Hero (1992)

Larry Darrell

Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman were good friends and even were roommates at one point when they were young and struggling actors. Rachel Weisz is married to your new favorite Bond, Daniel Craig. I've also had a crush on her for years.

Michael Weiner

The Book is about a Widow suing Big Tobacco over the death of her husband, who died of Lung Cancer. This film was trying to get made for many years, and then The Insider (1999) came out. Making another movie about going after Big Tobacco and having the verdict be shocking, doesn't work now. So they changed it to Gun Manufacturers. Also, Columbine had happened recently. I would have preferred they kept Big Tobacco as the defendant, as well.

Larry Darrell

One Fine Day (1996). Great Flick.

Larry Darrell

sorry in advance to Cassie for the YT comment section on this reaction due to comments like this from men suffering from LDE

SeanATX

I have to agree with the people who suggested NO WAY OUT as a great Gene Hackman film. Him and Kevin Costner with suspense equal to that of CRIMSON TIDE. Awesome movie!

Kirk & Dawn VanWinkle

Thanks for the info. Yeah I totally must’ve missed it.

Michael Lynch

@3:00

Jyn Jilly

Such a great movie. Love the twists and turns. Also the CEO of the gun company was the Bishop in Primal Fear.

Blake Evans

Did she mention it? I don’t recall her mentioning it. I must’ve missed it.

Michael Lynch

Did you not watch the first 3 minutes of this?

Jyn Jilly

How could you not recognize Dustin Hoffman from Rain Man? You just saw it.

Michael Lynch

First time watching. Now I know where the idea for, Bull came from. Intriguing movie. Loaded with great actors. Great Reaction, Ladies. Carly was a surprise. I wasn't expecting to see her. Carly is always a good addition. It kept me guessing. I didn't know how it was going to play out. Good movie.

Rick Williams

I used to have that ranked super high on my request list , but watched a reaction to it through a female lens, and realized, that it is a total guy’s movie. Never occurred to me how little a woman would like it until I saw a woman react to it.🤷‍♂️

Cole Jennett

Might I suggest that you watch Jury Duty on Amazon. Not as a reaction, but a fun thing for you and your hubby. It is hilarious. Note, I’m not talking Pauly Shore, lol. It’s a reality show where everyone is an actor accept for one guy, who thinks he’s part of a documentary on Jury Duty. It is hilarious, I’d recommend it to everyone.

Cole Jennett

Hackman in Get Shorty. Great comedy with Rene Russo, Danny deVito, John Travolta. Rene has never been sexier. Travolta never been cooler. Great comedy for you both to watch. I think you would both enjoy.

Brian McGovern

Yes...I thought that was funny too. Since I've been summoned twice, I can assure them that it is indeed real.

Walter

High Fidelity for a dark-ish romantic comedy with Cusack. Very underrated and the perfect amount of Jack Black.

Lyle Morgan

I remember this one not being one of my favorites and haven’t seen it in a long while. I felt at the time that it got kinda preachy. I’m watching tonight and gonna see if time has changed it for me.

Larry Darrell

It was one of the more bizarre things they’ve ever said. Civics teachers everywhere wept. One wonders how they thought juries were seated. 😆

Just Plain Bob

The one I voted for 😁♥️

Keith Jones

If you like Cusack please get onto Grosse Point Blank. Prob his best film.

mattosh79

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet...

Steve Mercier

pffff hahaha relax

shaneth138

@Stick: hah, suggesting the same movie within a single minute. I'm not even surprised anymore.

Gábor Árki

Great film!!

nick bell

This and JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG were my two top picks from the preliminary polls, so after seeing them both lose their respective poll, and RUNAWAY JURY having already been beaten on few other polls, it made me very happy today reading it is picked up for a reaction after all. I always liked this movie, even though it seems to be underrated by many. It is not a typical courtroom drama, but rather a clever combination of courtroom, heist and conspiracy thriller. But behind the suspense and surprise twists that keep the viewer engaged and entertained, there are also some deeper themes that make you think about the flaws and vulnerabilities of the US legal system, and of course the controversy of guns. This latter aspect is an interesting deviation from the novel which I believe focused on the tobacco industry. I think this adaptation makes the movie more relevant and engaging for the modern audience but given the dividing nature of this topic in the USA, it might also alienate some people. Also, this part of the movie may be its weakest aspect not having enough attention or detail. I think this is my favorite reaction from Witness Week, it was a pleasure seeing the excitement, enthusiasm and astonishment. Although just this morning I commented that KINDERGARTEN COP is my most awaited reaction for the week, it may have a hard job surpassing this one. 😃 Talking about the tobacco industry reminded me of another underrated movie that surprisingly has almost no support in Popcorn Requests: THANK YOU FOR SMOKING (2005), starring Aaron Eckhart, which explores the controversies surrounding the tobacco industry.

Gábor Árki

No Way Out - has Kevin Costner as well as Gene . He was also in Bonnie & Clyde which should be on one of your lists

John Drake

This is one of my fave courtroom dramas and I love the twist at the end.

Colin Gutierrez

I'm only at the beginning but.. did they just ask if jury duty is real..? lol

Jyn Jilly

Given your shared love of John Cusack, I'm going to throw out another suggestion for Being John Malkovich, and you can follow it with its quasi-sequel Adaptation, starring another PiB fave Nicolas Cage!

Henry Graham

Great movie and even better reaction. I don't know why, but I was keyed into her reaction to Dustin Hoffman the entire movie, but she only mentioned his name in the intro and the outro, so I wasn't sure during the movie that she recognized him. But she did, oh yes, she did.

Mike LL

We have absolutely made Cassie aware of THE VERDICT, because in the YouTube live chat of ERIN B, she mentioned THE VERDICT as one more courtroom movie that she has yet to see. One fine day.

Mike LL

Lol well if that isn't telling.

aarswft

He was going to make espresso. 😂

Zane From Canada

You saw hin in Young Frankenstein

Matt Mabry

spaced on HEARTBREAKERS. Pretty funny film. I'll add it.

Matt Rose

always LOVED the cast in this one, and didn’t know until after it came out that Hackman and Hoffman were former classmates and roommates who had never acted on screen together; the director added their scene late as a wish fulfillment after they’d already shot everything else; on the subject of Hackman, Enemy of the State has already been recommended and I second that…recommend you watch with Carly as it will REALLY make you think

JL_83

For me, seeing Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman together in this was like seeing Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat. Powerhouse actors playing off each other. Everyone is suggesting excellent Gene Hackman movies to include. 👍 Some additional gems: THE FRENCH CONNECTION II (1975) Sequel UNDER FIRE (1983) Journalism in conflict zone NO WAY OUT (1987) Conspiracy, cover up THE PACKAGE (1989) Assassination plan CLASS ACTION (1991) Courtroom drama THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995) Western quickdraw competition THE CHAMBER (1996) Death row legal drama TWILIGHT (1998) Film noire style detective story HEIST (2001) Self-explanatory 😁

Zane From Canada

A Gene Hackman fan? The French Connection is a must see. The greatest car chase of all time.

Charlie Burton

Love Runaway Jury!! Great cast, engaging dialogue and have I mentioned Rachel Weiz is a Hollywood crush of mine?

Robin Craft

Oh yeah, HEARTBREAKERS (2001) is one of my favorites.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

She still needs to see SUPERMAN II though.

Stick Figure Studios

Great list. Also, maybe HEARTBREAKERS for February

Gábor Árki

THE VERDICT is my favorite courtoom movie.

Stick Figure Studios

A very well made movie, but a bit too one-sidedly preachy for my taste.

David Crabtree

SCARECROW is another Hackman classic... and I think he's really funny in HEARTBREAKERS.

Stick Figure Studios

Yes... Mississippi Burning with Willem Dafoe is so good. Based on a sad part of American history.

Robin Craft

GROSSE POINT BLANK is great. SERENDIPITY not so much (though Cassie would probably like it).

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, Hackman is one our greatest actors, a legend. He's still alive, but has been retired for many years and his presence is sorely missed on our screens. Not every movie with him is worth seeing, but he is always good. Maybe this will inspire you to move up your viewing of SUPERMAN 2? Looking forward to seeing this reaction. I was confident you would like this one. It's a very good movie. I've never read the John Grisham book upon which it is based, but my wife has and she told me something interesting about it. Apparently it wasn't guns in the original story but cigarettes that they were going after. Have a hard time imagining how that could work, but she says she actually preferred it to the movie (which she still likes).

Stick Figure Studios

This movie is currently free on YouTube, bee tee dubs.

aarswft

Gene Hackman and Robin Williams are hilarious in The Birdcage… watch when you need a good laugh. If you can’t get away from the courtroom… may I suggest The Rainmaker for both Cassie and Carly

Tara

If you are digging John Cusack I would love you to watch Grosse Point Blank. Serendipity is good, but shouldn’t be his identifier, imo

Cole Jennett

Yep, I second ABSENCE OF MALICE (1981).

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Bachman was great in Bonnie and Clyde and won the Academy Award for The French Connection.

Michael and Phyllis Selby

I have never seen this, looks like I have a way to kill my afternoon now!! On another note, have you seen Judge Dredd, technically fits the courtroom theme. I'm not sure what is better Stallone saying "I am the law" or rob Schneider mocking him for it 🤣

Bubba Fett

she's seen it and reacted to it.

Matt Rose

As I’ve commented on Erin Brockovich, I also recommend A CIVIL ACTION (1998) starring John Travolta and Robert Duvall.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

It's impossible to watch multiple Gene Hackman movies and not become a fan. I wholeheartedly support the quest to watch more of his movies. 🍿

Pickupthepieces76

Ah, yes. You need to see Superman from 1978. You’ll love it because Gene Hackman is the “greatest criminal mind” Lex Luthor. But you’ll also fall for Christopher Reeve as Superman.

Matthew Hines

fun courtroom drama with good actors, but the attempts to destroy the 2nd amendment by the 'good guys' is actually disgusting.

rubberkidney

I love that you called an audible and added another to Witness Week. There are still so many good one’s left to do!

Cole Jennett

Yes! I WAS having kind of a not great day, now I have this to look forward to when I get home from work. Yeah Gene Hackman is great in everything he's in, good guy or bad guy, he's always amazing. Personally, for me, he's always Lex Luthor and ROYAL TENENBAUM!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Pair that one up with ABSENCE OF MALICE for a great Newman double feature.

Matt Rose

Also ABSOLUTE POWER

Anne-Marie Curtis

Another great courtroom drama that didn’t get much love in the polls is THE VERDICT (1982) starring Paul Newman.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

If you're really wanting some prime Gene Hackman: MISSISSIPPI BURNING THE FRENCH CONNECTION THE BIRDCAGE THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS THE CONVERSATION THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE GET SHORTY HEARTBREAKERS (added per comments below)

Matt Rose

Yes Gene Hackman was one of the greats. I recommend the Royal Tennenbaums and Enemy of the State!
