Runaway Jury (2003) - Full Reaction

I couldn't get away from the courtroom! I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately but we really loved this one!! It was so entertaining and connective and smart! I need to see everything Gene Hackman has ever done now.

And another connection from Definitely, Maybe (2008), the bad guy that burned Cusack's apartment was the guy running for governor in the Ryan Reynolds rom-com.

The beginning you Canadians crack me up.. Isn't a jury summons like a fairy tale thing ha.. I get called nearly every other year. If you pay taxes and a registered voter you're time will come... And Rachel Weisz I knew her most from the Mummy, Enemy at the Gates and this movie, but anymore I think most people know her cause she's married to James Bond( Daniel Craig).

I was so happy to see you all playing this that I finally had to become a patron. I love courtroom movies, and when I saw the last three films, I knew it was time. The Rainmaker, Anatomy of a Murder, 12 Angry Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird. All are great and some of my favorites. You all might have seen Anatomy of a Murder; that sticks in my mind for some reason.

I want to thank you for doing this channel and for yours and Carly's time. Whenever you drop a new review, I tell my ex-wife I have a date night with two gorgeous blonds to watch a movie. The first time I told her this, she gave me a skeptical side eye glare. Loved it. Love you both, mean it. Matt

Cassie, I have been put in the jury pool 5 times over the years, and never selected. I am not at all someone any lawyer wants on a jury 😂. Not all cases get one of these jury selection experts... They are expensive. Just for expensive or high profile cases. Also, I was a private investigator from 1991-1993, and mostly did divorce cases, and workers comp cases. Lots of spy work 🙄 and I could find out a lot of info about people in a relatively short time. The Internet has made all that elementary these days...

Cassie, if you like court room dramas try On The Basis Of Sex (2018) about the early life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Or for a court room drama that's a little spicier try Wild Things (1998) with Bill Murray, Kevin Bacon and Neve Campbell.

I don't think any has mentioned Hoosiers with Gene Hackman. A sports movie that would check all of Cassie's boxes. A little-known movie he was in that I saw in the theaters was Narrow Margin (1990). Really enjoyed that one. He was also in another Courtroom drama in Class Action. As far as Dustin Hoffman goes, I'll stand on rooftops praising Kramer vs. Kramer and Finding Neverland.

I would have preferred they kept Big Tobacco as the defendant, like in the Novel. The Lawsuit in the film didn't make a lot of sense to me. They hardly spent anytime on the facts of the case, which didn't help. With a Hot Button issue like this, I felt they could have tried a little harder to try and sway the viewing audience to the side of the plaintiff. I know the main focus of the film was the Jury tampering and swinging, but if you didn't believe the plaintiff's case was solid, then the final verdict doesn't feel very comfortable. In the End, it seemed like the verdict was purely based on the Emotions of the Jurors. This is the complete opposite of the lessons learned in 12 Angry Men, which I thought were pretty good.
Recommendations...

The Book is about a Widow suing Big Tobacco over the death of her husband, who died of Lung Cancer. This film was trying to get made for many years, and then The Insider (1999) came out. Making another movie about going after Big Tobacco and having the verdict be shocking, doesn't work now. So they changed it to Gun Manufacturers. Also, Columbine had happened recently.
I would have preferred they kept Big Tobacco as the defendant, as well.

Might I suggest that you watch Jury Duty on Amazon. Not as a reaction, but a fun thing for you and your hubby. It is hilarious. Note, I’m not talking Pauly Shore, lol. This and JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG were my two top picks from the preliminary polls, so after seeing them both lose their respective poll, and RUNAWAY JURY having already been beaten on few other polls, it made me very happy today reading it is picked up for a reaction after all.
I always liked this movie, even though it seems to be underrated by many. It is not a typical courtroom drama, but rather a clever combination of courtroom, heist and conspiracy thriller. But behind the suspense and surprise twists that keep the viewer engaged and entertained, there are also some deeper themes that make you think about the flaws and vulnerabilities of the US legal system, and of course the controversy of guns. This latter aspect is an interesting deviation from the novel which I believe focused on the tobacco industry. I think this adaptation makes the movie more relevant and engaging for the modern audience but given the dividing nature of this topic in the USA, it might also alienate some people. Also, this part of the movie may be its weakest aspect not having enough attention or detail.
I think this is my favorite reaction from Witness Week, it was a pleasure seeing the excitement, enthusiasm and astonishment. Although just this morning I commented that KINDERGARTEN COP is my most awaited reaction for the week, it may have a hard job surpassing this one. 😃
Talking about the tobacco industry reminded me of another underrated movie that surprisingly has almost no support in Popcorn Requests: THANK YOU FOR SMOKING (2005), starring Aaron Eckhart, which explores the controversies surrounding the tobacco industry.

Great movie and even better reaction. I don't know why, but I was keyed into her reaction to Dustin Hoffman the entire movie, but she only mentioned his name in the intro and the outro, so I wasn't sure during the movie that she recognized him. But she did, oh yes, she did.

always LOVED the cast in this one, and didn’t know until after it came out that Hackman and Hoffman were former classmates and roommates who had never acted on screen together; the director added their scene late as a wish fulfillment after they’d already shot everything else; on the subject of Hackman, Enemy of the State has already been recommended and I second that…recommend you watch with Carly as it will REALLY make you think

For me, seeing Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman together in this was like seeing Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat. Powerhouse actors playing off each other.
Everyone is suggesting excellent Gene Hackman movies to include. 👍 Some additional gems:
THE FRENCH CONNECTION II (1975) Sequel
UNDER FIRE (1983) Journalism in conflict zone
NO WAY OUT (1987) Conspiracy, cover up
THE PACKAGE (1989) Assassination plan
CLASS ACTION (1991) Courtroom drama
THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995) Western quickdraw competition
THE CHAMBER (1996) Death row legal drama
TWILIGHT (1998) Film noire style detective story
HEIST (2001) Self-explanatory 😁

Yeah, Hackman is one our greatest actors, a legend. He's still alive, but has been retired for many years and his presence is sorely missed on our screens. Not every movie with him is worth seeing, but he is always good. Maybe this will inspire you to move up your viewing of SUPERMAN 2? Looking forward to seeing this reaction. I was confident you would like this one. It's a very good movie. I've never read the John Grisham book upon which it is based, but my wife has and she told me something interesting about it. Apparently it wasn't guns in the original story but cigarettes that they were going after. Have a hard time imagining how that could work, but she says she actually preferred it to the movie (which she still likes).
