Erin Brockovich (2000) - Full Reaction

Witness Week is off to a great start! I don't think I could ever not like a movie Julia Roberts is in! This story is something else, mixing in the 'based on a true story' angle I love so much. I couldn't stop reading about it. Can't wait for the rest of the week!

Erin Brockovich (2000) - Full Reaction

Comments

I haven't seen the full movie yet, but I need to check it out. Parts of the movie were obviously filmed in the San Fernando Valley (Southern California), where I grew up. I always get nostalgic when I see it.

Stephen Dias

A great Tommy Lee Jones movie (witness type) is The Client. Excellent

Carol Rocha

I know I'm late to the party, but if you didn't notice in the credits or if nobody else pointed it out I'm going to make a suggestions. Go back to the beginning and watch Erin going through her terrible car accident trial and after picking up the children she decides to treat everybody to dinner at the diner [10:07]... the waitress at the diner that waited on them, THAT was the REAL person, Erin Brockovich!

Brad Lowry

Excellent reaction.

Clay F

i love this movie for many reasons. Whats really cool is we know how her life was before this case.. Her networth now is 12 million.

Ryan Towell

You mean "The Dark Knight"..?

Ryan Towell

I had forgotten how good this was. Great reaction.

Eddie Perkins

Whatever you do, do not look up and see what happened with Jorg & Erin. It'll mess up your perfect ending! :)

Philip Alan

Spotlight

Lift Me (Dave)

Fantastic movie, I hope she watches it.

Oisin Clissmann

This is one of your best reactions, and that is quite a feat.

Brent Petty

Oh yeah that's a great movie. The best that both of them have done!

rakesh

I am again going to recommend the movie Out of Sight. It is from the same the director and the best George Clooney movie an best Jennifer Lopez movie.

Gerry

Great reaction! Even though I remember vividly when this movie came out and the Oscars it was nominated for, I had never sat down to watch. Great film and Julia's performance is well deserving of the Oscar. And since every time you react to a movie based on a true story you comment on how much you love them, I have to once again recommend IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, based on the true story of some people imprisoned for a crime they didn't commit. Featuring courtroom scenes, injustice, prison, and more!

SeanATX

I hoped the Pelican Brief would have done better on the pole. It's definitely one she'll like.

David Poray

For more Albert Finney, you'll love Big Fish. It's a romance too!

Odd Thomas

I hope you still get round to The Pelican Brief. It's Julia Roberts AND Denzel! Other JR recommendations are Conspiracy Theory with Mel Gibson, and Flatliners, great 80s thriller about near-death experiences.

Odd Thomas

Great Film! Loved the Reaction. Not really a Courtroom film though. I'd categorize this in the Investigative/Journalism category. These are films that show mainly the events that lead up to a Courtroom, but end before we get there or spend very little time there. The Courtroom is not a main location. In this category you'll also find... All the President's Men (1976) The China Syndrome (1979) Silkwood (1983) Spotlight (2015) The Newsroom (2012) series and combined with the Thriller genre from same writer as The Firm... The Pelican Brief (1993) The Client (1994) and for the In the Courtroom Films... Witness for the Prosecution (1957) Inherit the Wind (1960) Jagged Edge (1985) The Rainmaker (1997) Also, I Recommend two films which show the same story from two different aspects... The Caine Mutiny (1954), shows events leading up to a smaller courtroom sequence in the end The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988), which takes place entirely in the Courtroom. Edit: Just read that William Friedkin's final film before he died on August 7 of this year, was an adaptation of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month. Showtime and Paramount are the production companies on the film, so it will probably be available for streaming soon. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is originally a Stage Play by Herman Wouk, which he adapted from his own 1951 novel, The Caine Mutiny. In this version, WE, the viewing audience are like the Jurors in a court case, only being shown the testimonies of the witnesses involved. I never did this myself, but it might be cool to watch the Court-Martial film first, before seeing the actual events in The Caine Mutiny.

Larry Darrell

I was very impressed by Haywire (2011). An Old-School action spy flick minimal to no CGI, starring Gina Carano in her film debut, doing all her own stunts. Soderbergh filmed the fight scenes very realistically in wide shots, minimal cutting, and no music. Impressive also, to see the full cast list in such a low-budget film, starring an in-experienced MMA Fighter in the Lead role. Gina Carano nailed it, IMO. Soderbergh too.

Larry Darrell

Yes to the Rainmaker (1997) for the Courtroom aspects that Cassie likes. The Pelican Brief (1993), for more Julia Roberts and the Investigative aspects that were seen in Erin Brockovich. Denzel is there too. And Yes to the Client (1994), for more of the Underdog.

Larry Darrell

My #1 Pick for Cassie & Carly. Also, my Favorite film, since I was very, very little. Even before I could talk. I used to call it Nik-Nak Nolias.

Larry Darrell

Afaik YouTube started showing ads even on non-monetized channels. I don't have a personal experience, I have been subscribing to YouTube Premium for a while, but have been reading these complaints in a few places. The viable options are either a YT Premium subscription or whatever adblocker currently works, but I think Google started waging a war against those as well. Or just download the video from Google Drive. PS, related part in their T&C "You grant to YouTube the right to monetize your Content on the Service (and such monetization may include displaying ads on or within Content or charging users a fee for access). This Agreement does not entitle you to any payments."

Gábor Árki

The channel that we post the full reactions to is not monetized. They are all unlisted videos with no ads from our end. We are looking into other options though, sorry for the trouble!

Cassie

It's probably a YouTube thing. They are going hard on commercials so you pay not to see them. I hope Cassie looks at different hosts for the patreon videos, maybe try Rumble.

Mike Lemon

Hi Cassie. I think you need to look into why the full reaction video has commercials being shown. I thought this was not allowed, given it is not a listed video. It makes watching along very difficult since there were A LOT of commercials and makes it go out of sync every time a commercial is shown. Edit: okay, it turns out you are allowed to monetise. It is very frustrating though, you have to pause the video to keep the sync

Brian McGovern

Yes. I assume this was rhetorical question given several other people mention who the waitress was. I guess people do not read all the comments and assume no one ever mentioned it?

Brian McGovern

Question. Did anyone else get commercials when viewing on YOUTUBE? I thought unlisted videos such as this do not get commercials. Second time this has happened. It must be a client based thing. I am watching on an iPad using the YouTube application. I have never been a Julia Roberts fan, especially in her earlier roles, but man she killed it in this.

Brian McGovern

Hey, does anyone know who plays the waitress in the diner? :)

Brent Petty

Out of Sight is SOOOO underappreciated. George Clooney, Ving Rhames, Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle.

Brent Petty

Agreed. Speaking as someone who grew up in Parkersburg, WV, where DuPont did that.

Brent Petty

Yes please! Steel Magnolias is wonderful!

Juley

Great Reaction, Ladies. Welcome back Carly. It seems like it's been forever since you were watching a movie with, Cassie. This was my first time seeing this movie. Julia Roberts always seems to be great in every movie I Have seen her in. Another good legal movie with Julia Roberts is, The Pelican Brief. It also has, Denial Washington.

Rick Williams

Aaron Eckhart did play Harvey Dent in Batman Forever but he was also in Thank you for Smoking as Big Tobacco lobby man Nick Nailor

James Young

Ditto on The Rainmaker. Also, The Client.

Brian Lowery

So happy to see this reaction, and double happy that both of you are here!

Thoko

Don't give up 😊🙂

Björn Karlsson

PG&E is a scumbag company. For profit utilities are notorious for this stuff, but PG&E in particular is a scourge. See also: San Bruno Gas explosion, the Butte Fire and the Camp Fire.

Mitzi McCoy

FYI, the waitress in the diner is the real Erin Brockovich

rtt143

And both movies are based on books by master storyteller John Grisham. :) Cassie did a reaction to The Firm last September. She hit a home run, as usual.

Damon

If you’re looking for a court type suspense film with Julia Roberts, in it, I would suggest the Pelican Brief. I think it’s a really good movie. There’s also the firm with Tom Cruise if you haven’t already seen it. These are not true stories, but there are suspenseful and legal type movies that you may like to watch.

Mary Alice

"the 'based on a true story' angle I love so much." - Perhaps you have heard of a little movie called- Indictment: The McMartin Trial (1995)? It is more than "based on", it *is* a true story (with a little time compression at the end) and I see it suggested here in the comments all the time.

Mike Lemon

So yeah, recent events with the train derailments and the chemical spills. All the chickens dying in the surrounding area days later. Guess who was there??? Yep, Erin.

Matt Mabry

Again, Albert Finney was magical in 'Big Fish'!

Terry Yelmene

Same! He will always be daddy warbucks to me.

brooke atkins

I have been begging for her to watch steel magnolias for 2 years. I know she would be so engrossed in it. Please Cassie!!!

brooke atkins

Another great film with Albert Finney is MILLERS CROSSING...love that movie

nick bell

I'll gladly join Tara's cause and help champion The Rainmaker! *charges forth as The Charge of the Rohirrim plays*

Damon

Another Aaron Eckhart film you would both love, is No Reservations. He stars with Catherine Zeta Jones and Abigail Breslin.

Brian Lowery

Cassie and Carly will also love The Rainmaker.

G

FYI: The waitress in the beginning of the film is the real Erin Brokovitch

James Loveless

PG&E is pacific gas and electric. They’re also responsible for the California wildfires of 2017 in NorCal. Had to evacuate our homes cuz they didn’t maintain power lines

djKENTO

So many great things in this movie but one of my favorites has to be when Erin tells the PG & E lawyers that they had the water brought from a well in Hinkley, and they won't drink it 😆

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Dark Waters (2019)

Chris

Great reaction ladies! It’s been a minute since I watched this film. I forgot how good both Julia and Albert Finney were in this film. Julia even won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role. Yes, PG&E is a real company. They provide Gas and Electricity for 2/3rds of California including my home. I don’t remember this case in real life. But they have had to pay Billions in recent years for fires that may have been caused because of poorly maintained power lines.

Robert da Spruce

This was a great reaction, and I second Tara’s recommendation of The Rainmaker, and want to again remind you of “The Hurricane”. It would qualify for Black History Month. I think both will give you similar feelings to Erin Brockovich. Though I think The Rainmaker is just based on the book by John Grisham, I don’t believe it’s a true story like the other two.

Cole Jennett

And to think… the whole thing started because she was looking at a pro bono real estate file and happened to notice there were medical records in it and was wondering why. If she had shrugged and moved on…

Tara

I first new Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks and the John Huston musical ANNIE.

Stick Figure Studios

And was directed by the same guy.

Stick Figure Studios

Since no one else is going to mention it, I will. This film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, a supremely talented filmmaker (one of my favorites) who got his start doing acclaimed low budget Indie movies like SEX, LIES & VIDEOTAPE and KAFKA, but ended up eventually doing such films as OCEANS ELEVEN/TWELVE/THIRTEEN, MAGIC MIKE 1 & 2, LOGAN LUCKY, CONTAGION and OUT OF SIGHT to name just a few. The year that Julia Roberts was winning her Oscar for portraying Erin Brockovich, Soderbergh actually had two films up for best picture: this one and TRAFFIC. Soderbergh was nominated as best director twice that year (once for each movie) which in itself was a great accomplishment, but what was truly remarkable was that he won for one of them (TRAFFIC). This means that he actually beat himself in competition! When he took the stage he gave one of my favorite speeches anyone has ever given the Academy Awards. Looking forward to this reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

I recall Erin Brockovich being a big deal for the Pacific Gas and Electric corruption and she had national notoriety by the time the movie was being made. I remember she was on Oprah and many other major media. She made a real difference! Great react ladies!

Terry Yelmene

And... Albert Finney in 'Big Fish' was absolutely 'magical'!

Terry Yelmene

I love this movie

Robbie

I'm so glad you both finally got to watch this amazing movie. True story movies don't come better than this one. Cassie, you did a much better job of keeping it together at the end than I did. No matter how many times I've seen this movie, the scene where Erin tells Donner how much the judge is going to make PG&E pay has me crying my eyes out every single time.

Luke Godfrey

Anyone interested you can follow Erin on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ErinBrockovich?t=8rk8UEG9LIVte5QaIL268Q&s=09

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

I’ve met and hung out with Erin a few times, we have mutual friends. She’s a trip. I don’t know enough about the real events to know if the movie’s accurate, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that Julia got Erin pretty close to right, based on my limited experience. If anything, she maybe soft-pedaled the energy a little. Erin is good people if she likes you, and super charming and charismatic, but I’d be scared as hell to get on her bad side. 😂

Brian Harris

Erin Brockovich > Dark Waters

Grad

I hope you 2 get around to North Country 2006 another great court true story

Christopher

Such an engaging reaction. The sisters were so into the story. And I myself had forgotten how engrossing the story actually was. Great start to Witness Week! Next case!

Mike LL

yep she was the waitress at the beginning taking the kids orders

Andrew Rose

You watched oceans 11 I believe. That had Julia Robert’s in it.

Brandon

OMG, the look on Cassie's face when he started revving the motorcycle... LMAO! I thought she was going to jump through the screen and give the guy a beating. Don't know how you ladies kept the waterworks under control. This movie always generates those ninjas with onions for me.

Art of Free Speech

The real Erin has a cameo in the movie

Dioskur

Julia Roberts won her Oscar for this role, just in case anyone didn’t already know :)

JL_83

The real Erin Brickovich played the waitress at the diner in the beginning.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

A personal favorite of mine. Cool story!

Jerrod Acree

Ed Masry is played by Albert Finney who was also the older man in Skyfall who was the caretaker of Bond’s childhood home who helps protect M.

Tara

Pretty similar synopses. In this it was the Pacific Gas & Electric Company poisoning people with chromium. In Dark Waters, it was DuPont poisoning people with teflon.

Zane From Canada

Albert finney is a great guy my dad work with him call him his best buddy lol he was also kincade from skyfall

MatthewBrown74m

Quite a remarkable story. Looking forward to watching your reaction Cassie!

Robert da Spruce

No way! That's a nice little Easter Egg 🍳

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

Cassie, PLEASE, PLEASE add The Rainmaker to Witness week. This has been on your courtroom polls for 2 years. I’ve been patiently waiting… 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Fun Fact: At the beginning of the movie when she takes her kids to the restaurant for dinner. The waitress is the real Erin Brockovich. She wasn’t sure if Julia was the right actress to play her.

Tara

Looking forward to watching the full version - this seems like your kind of movie. In my opinion, Julia Roberts' best performance.

Steve Miller

Knew you'd love this one. On top of being a genuinely good story, the script is full of high energy zingers to keep things lively and entertaining along the way. Roberts is rightly praised for her performance but Albert Finney is the film's secret weapon. Great movie.

Matt Rose

What an underdog story she crushed it made it real,I love Julia Roberts, heck yeah more Julia in the near future Cassie!♡ 'Steel Magnolias' with Sally Fields would be great..

Celeste McAllister

I liked that one too.

Matt Rose

Never seen this. Should I watch it along with a reaction or not? Also the synopsis sounds a lot like Dark Waters/Mark Ruffalo.

AdrianF

Put on your righteous cause cap while watching Erin Brockovich. Have your box of tissues at the ready while watching Philadelphia. And, maybe have an extra thick blanket to shield your eyes while watching Primal Fear. 😁

Zane From Canada

A CIVIL ACTION (1998) starring John Travolta and Robert Duvall is another good one (based on a true story) and right up your alley. P.S. I worked on the environmental site the movie is based on.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

My favourite Julia Roberts movie
