I OBJECT POLL A (courtroom/lawyer)

Courtroom/Lawyer Poll!! This is in my top 3 genres I think! Can’t wait for these! I will take the top 3 winners from both Poll A and Poll B for a final poll!

Make sure to vote on Poll B as well!

Comments

Ahhh, Thoko, evidence to support my theory. The obvious challenge you youngsters face is that the film inventory just keeps growing. So, the younger you are, the more of an uphill climb it is to “catch up.” No way you can see everything, so just listen to me. 😜 But, seriously, I hope you will look into classic older films at some point. I think Cassie’s experience doing so has been very positive.

Junior

I was born in 1985 and I simply haven't watched many movies that were released before my childhood or even before my birth

Thoko

How could The Verdict do so poorly in this poll? I’m guessing too many of the people voting simply never saw it.

Junior

Runaway Jury is another great courtroom drama.

Colin Gutierrez

Philadelphia has a great performance by Tom Hanks, but as a courtroom drama it falls short. The opposition is both comically evil and inept, even though they are supposedly the biggest law firm in town.

sourcreamus

You know, my choice will not win this one, but if nothing else, these polls remind me of some classics I need to watch again. I haven't seen some of these movies in literally decades, but I have seen every one of them, on both polls, multiple times. They are all good choices, so I really can't lose this poll!

TheGuy

Cass and I will take this into consideration.

Norrin Radd

The Verdict is one of Paul Newman's finest performances. It came out four years before he won his only Oscar for his reprisal of the character, Fast Eddie Felson, from "The Hustler". He won his Oscar for "The Color of Money" playing opposite a young Tom Cruise.

Timothy Fox

OMG! So many good ones! I voted to Lincoln Lawyer, but my 2nd fave is Pelican Brief. They are ALL good, so which ever one makes, I'll be happy.

Robert Nelson

How is THAT fair? The one with the most votes wins, period.

Craig Russell

This is one of my favorite Paul Newman movies. I guess it technically isn’t a courtroom movie as there aren’t any courtroom scenes but the final meeting with Wilford Brimley is a tour de force moment that feels like one. Glad you brought it up.

Michael and Phyllis Selby

You win . . . wish I had thought to say this

2-Can

Another Paul Newman courtroom film for consideration is Absence of Malice (a great Wilford Brimley role, too). Also, Breaker Morant for a military court martial.

2-Can

Cassie, in the interest of being fair to everyone, after the poll closes you and I should discuss which movie you should ultimately choose.

Norrin Radd

Ah, that stinks, kudos for the update

Andrew Hogan

Kevin, I believe you are exactly right.

Shawn Kildal

Philadelphia is a very well made movie it was made by the same director who made silence of the lambs

MatthewBrown74m

Ah the Pelican brief is on this pole. Love it. Judgement at Nuremburg just should be included, and the Client is most intriguing.

Roger Wayne Alms

And the classic, "Witness for the Prosecution" with Charles Laughton.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

"...And Justice For All" starring Al Pacino is pretty good. ("No! You're out of order!! This whole courtroom is out of order!!!")

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

Primal Fear IMO

John Cranberry

Come on Primal Fear!!! 💪🏻

Norrin Radd

That would be in the Journalism/Investigative category… Which is actually the category that The Pelican Brief belongs in, but since it’s John Grisham it always gets saddled with the Lawyer category. I’m not complaining. I’m voting for it too.

Larry Darrell

figures, my movies never win these polls.

zynjams

The Rainmaker is kind of a more comedic remake of The Verdict

Kevin Charley

I voted for Pelican Brief. Very interesting plot and I love the cast. Lot of good movies on there though. I'm also surprised All the President's Men isn't one of the choices.

Johnny

I am really hoping for Presumed Innocent or The Verdict. They are 2 of my all-time favorites regardless of categories. Can't be mad though since Philadelphia is a great movie as well and one that Cassie would love.

Shawn Kildal

It's on the other poll. It's currently in 3rd place

Shawn Kildal

She has a reaction to 12 Angry Men ready for you to watch

Shawn Kildal

the rainmaker should have made the list

zynjams

I'm a fan of Pelican Brief. Excellent cast. Briskly paced. Still VERY relevant today. Holds your interest from beginning to end.

Clear Light

Philadelphia is one hell of an emotional movie, so powerful

S Elphick

Another great candidate would be Breaker Morant with Edward Woodward and Bryan Brown.

Tom Holman

Another list of great movies.. All of them should be on her "must watch" list. My vote goes to "Philadelphia" because of Tom Hanks (Best Actor Oscar winner - his acceptance speech is amazing, too) and Denzel Washington's performances.

Kevin

One notable absence: In the Name of the Father (1993), starring Daniel Day Lewis. His performance is, as always, amazing.

Paul Deaconu

Looks like you're gonna get some more Denz...

Mikey Mike

Let's go Primal Fear! Edward Norton's performance alone makes this well worth watching!

Art of Free Speech

Agreed... Primal Fear is AWESOME, but worth watching even just for Norton's performance.

Art of Free Speech

You forgot The Trail of the Chicago 7.

Joe M

The first actor to do that was Spencer Tracy

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Difficult to ignore the star power of Tom Hanks and Denzel.

Robin Craft

Loved that one. Talk about an all star cast. Montgomery Clift made me tear up in that movie. Not just his performance, but him in general at that time. His story and death was more tragic than Marilyn Monroe's.

Zane From Canada

I voted for Philadelphia because it was the back to back Best Actor Oscar award for Tom Hanks who is only the second actor in history to accomplish that. The first was in the 1930’s Tom’s second Best Actor was the following year with Forrest Gump

Tara

Judgement at Nuremberg is one of the most important films ever made, and it’s also an engrossing drama, with a cast that spans the entire history of cinema, from Spencer Tracy to Judy Garland to a young, pre-Kirk William Shatner. Knowing that Cassie has seen Schindler’s List tells me she can handle this material. What’s remarkable about the film is how smart and restrained it is: it’s dramatic but not melodramatic, because it doesn’t need to be, letting the real-life horrors speak for themselves. It’s actually a better film than Schindler’s List; it’s one of the best films made about the aftermath of WWII, and it’s very timely as it concerns the extent to which we can or should hold the powerful accountable for their actions. Having seen her reaction to Twelve Angry Men and sensing her strong sense of justice and morality I think Cassie will be riveted by this film.

jdj830

Phenomenal film.

Stick Figure Studios

Best courtroom drama I've ever seen.

Stick Figure Studios

Very good film.

Stick Figure Studios

THE VERDICT is the best courtroom drama I've ever seen, so naturally it's not winning. Sone other good films on here though: PRIMAL FEAR, PRESUMED INNOCENT, JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG... all worth watching.

Stick Figure Studios

I'm guessing not enough people have seen Judgement at Nuremberg but it’s one of the best courtroom dramas (won Oscar for Best Picture) with an all star cast including Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Judy Garland, Maximilian Schell, Marlene Dietrich, etc.

dlb737

I'm honestly not really into courtroom movies, but I vote for Philiadelphia because I've heard people talk about that movie a lot, looks like it's in the lead lol!😁

Wesley White

Primal Fear is my favorite of that list. Edward Norton even got an Academy Award nomination for his role. Although Philadelphia and The Client are also classics.

Blake Evans

A fun one would be the 1957 version of Witness for the Prosecution with Charles Laughton.

KDW 57

Seriously you're not voting for presumed innocent?

rakesh

Pelican and Philadelphia are must see 90s movies (both Denzel too!)

Odd Thomas

She already watched it and it's on the channel!

Tyler Foster

I am not a fan of Primal Fear.... and IMO the best movie on this list (without any question) is "Presumed Innocent" which is a courtroom classic. It's total underappreciation will almost certainly mean it has no chance here, but it is one of the greatest courtroom dramas ever conceived, from a classic novel by Scott Turow. "Philadelphia" is also a truly great movie, but (again IMO) is isn't a great COURTROOM movie. All of the best stuff in that film happens outside the proceedings.

Cliff Endicott

I am sad not to see Anatomy of a Murder on the list. Great cast, lots of courtroom drama

Jay

While the film I would watch is Judgement at Nuremberg I would feel guilty if our lady of the popcorn committed suicide after watching it... So I have gone with primal fear, partly to watch Cassie jump out of her skin and partly for the excellent performances

James Moy

Great movie for sure. Haven't seen it in years...I should remedy that.

Matt Rose

I'm guessing not enough people have seen The Verdict. It has to be the best movie on the list.

Kevin Charley

It would call for a sustained series of objections, I agree.

Mike LL

No I would be against shoehorning Mr. Smith into a courtroom poll. I'm all for Mr. Smith, no need for the shoehorning.

Mike LL

The Verdict with Paul Newman as an aging lawyer taking one last shot against great odds, an absolute winner. American Film Institute AFI has it ranked #4 on its list of TOP Legal dramas. Film received 5 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best actor (Newman) Also stars Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden. Recommend highly.

Marc Peterson

100%. I'd especially love a Dog Day Afternoon reaction.

Henry Graham

It says choose all that apply, unfortunately I can only choose one.

fish_thefilmcollector

I'm spoiled by Bosch and I know what a Connelly-based TV show can look like, that's the problem. Still hoping for a crossover in Bosch Legacy though - it's not like the LL show is complete ass, but it's kinda ass. It's certainly successful but..

Martin Nicholls

My money’s on Erin Brockovich winning the final poll. Although I expect Philadelphia to be a close second, which hopefully means Cassie will watch both. 🤞🏻🍿

Luke Godfrey

I do quite enjoy the Neflix series. If you can get past some of the performances, the story is very good. Very courtroomy.

Mike LL

so many great choices. I really do hope you do the client at some point. and all who didn't vote for it should as well.

Mike Stevenson

You can make a case (pardon the pun 😉) for every movie in both polls. Great choices.

Robin Craft

Definitely The Lincoln Lawyer!

Jacob Colson

No. It was a pillowcase pull, but only an alternate. Then it lost on a pillowcase poll, maybe against 300, then lost badly on a runner up poll.

Gábor Árki

I just started watching the show on Netflix but it’s not grabbing me so far. I did enjoy the movie though.

brooke atkins

Wow these are all great choices Cassie. I have seen them all except presumed innocent. I need to watch that soon. Honestly Cassie you really need to watch all of these. I’m sure you’ll get around to it eventually. I’m gonna be happy with whatever wins. Looks like the best movie is winning so far. We shall see.

brooke atkins

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is superb. Hopefully she gets around to it at some point.

Matt Rose

It's been mentioned quite a few times but I don't think it was ever specifically 'on deck' for viewing. I could be wrong. I think she'd like it. Action, romance, adventure, and Queen. You can't go wrong....unless you watch the sequels.

Matt Rose

Very off topic, but, am I crazy or was Highlander supposed to be watched months ago?

Andrew Hogan

Ahh, see that's good. Cover all the bases. 👍

Zane From Canada

Lucky for you, the reaction is already up and available.

Gábor Árki

Yep.... Julia and Denzel are great but I don't recall any courtroom scenes in this. Definitely a suspense/thriller.

Robin Craft

Quite a few I haven't seen from these and a few I did and liked. But I have to go with JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, which I think is the most powerful and important, and may be the best movie from this poll. Even though I don't have much hope for it winning or even making it to the final poll.

Gábor Árki

My pick is Witness for the Prosecution. Superior cast and screenplay.

Bill Hayden

High Crimes and Civil action are also good ones.

Edgar Gonzalez

She did call it a Courtroom/Lawyer poll so she covered her bases, lol.

Cole Jennett

Going with Judgement at Nuremberg. History side of me is very strong with this one

Bill Maurer

It would be a crime to only watch 1 movie from these 2 polls

Kim Brink

Cassie has to do a whole Sidney Lumet director watchthrough. Gotta see Network, Verdict, Dog day Afternoon, Serpico, Murder on the Orient Express and more.

AC5555

Anatomy of a Murder is better than all of those.

Terry Wood

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen most of these movies. But I’m starting to get confused on which ones which! Especially all the ones based on Grisham novels! 😂

Robert da Spruce

Excellent bunch of choices. 👍 Does The Pelican Brief qualify for this poll? It's an excellent movie with a theme around the law, lawyers, and judges. But it's more of a mystery/thriller than it is a courtroom drama.

Zane From Canada

She has.

AC5555

And Cassie makes me eat my words because The Rainmaker is in the other poll. I won't edit and modify my too quick words. I did miss that there were two polls. Bless Cassie, we ARE not worthy!

Mike LL

Nuremberg is such a crucial one. Huge huge historical topic that shouldn’t be skipped.

AC5555

Just posted.

Robin Craft

i think she already watched 12 Angry Men

Jimmy Reyes

Hahaha I just watched Philadelphia yesterday. I’d add Witness for the Prosecution, Amistad, Oppenheimer, The Accused, and Sergeant Rutledge. Also sorta courtroom: Mr Smith goes to Washington

AC5555

Watched!😊

Cole Jennett

She's already watched it

Kevin Charley

She's already watched it

Kevin Charley

Thank you very much for putting a classic courtroom movie on the poll, Judgement at Nuremberg. It has as much chance of winning as of my flying to the moon, but it was the thought that counts, and it is very much appreciated. I voted for The Verdict and The Lincoln Lawyer. Both are excellent. I really enjoy Matthew McConaughey's performance and Paul Newman's is a real meaty actor's actor performance. I guess I am saying I voted for the performances. I would have voted for The Rainmaker. That one is a corker. For goodness sakes, people, don't let Philadelphia win. smh. It's always the movies I don't want to win. But I've won a few. Win some, lose some. 😂 More like, win one, lose a bunch. 😂😂😂😂

Mike LL

I'm also troubled that "12 Angry Men" didn't make the list.

George Haselden

A poll of films featuring courtroom drama and "My Cousin Vinny" isn't on the list? For shame!!!

George Haselden

Where is Poll B?

Adam Doyle

I just wanted to leave an unrelated comment after watching your watching of Airplane: you need to also watch Blazing Saddles and A Fish Called Wanda if you haven't already. Also, Monty Python's Life of Brian.

B.J. Wilson

The Verdict is probably the greatest performance ever given by Paul Newman. As Sidney Lumet described it, the one where he gave most of himself to a role.

Henry Graham

A lot of great movies here. Giving my vote to The Pelican Brief because it's underrated. It's definitely not a courtroom drama though. More of a mystery/thriller.

JayF

Ooh, Lincoln Lawyer, wub some Michael Connelly (TV series is ass, but the movie aint). Also: objection, leading.

Martin Nicholls

I've only seen 3 or 4 of these. Primal fear is my vote 🔥

Louis Chapman

Wow, lots of great movies on this list.

Uncle Phoenix

Unfortunately I don't know any of these films 😅
