You don’t need to believe the Bond code name theory, This could rather be a branching timeline. So in the continuing bond franchise all movies are canon (with one person, not code name) up to the Craig reboot, whereas here, under the theory, only the Connery films are canon to the Rock story. Similar to the David Gordon Green Halloween films only taking the 1978 original as canon and branching from there.
As to the producer denying it, well, given the Eon ownership of the bond character and the lawyers they employ to protect that, the producer would deny it wouldn’t he.

This is a decent and fun action movie that I've always said had a really good movie hiding inside of it. I really think think if they had centered the movie around Hummel and him trying to get justice for his men it could have been more than just another Michael Bay movie.

This is Pulp Fiction's fault. You don't inject anything into the heart. You have a rib cage. Plus the last thing you want to do is damage your heart by injecting a giant needle into it.

He also turned Dumbledore because he didn't understand it. So he then took the role in Leage of Extradionary Gentelman because he didn't understand it. The movie bombed and he retired from acting.

Y’all should definitely watch Con Air (1997) next. For sure.
Also, did anyone notice Jim Caviezel (Count of Monte Cristo) for a split second as an F-18 Pilot.

He is also doing a screen accent in the Rock and in most of his later films. His natural speech was somewhere in between Bond and this... I wager that strong accent was a (not so) subtle attempt by him to avoid being typecast as 007 in his later career.

A dear friend of mine's husband did his BUDS (SEAL training) in 95, most of the nonspeaking Navy SEALs in this were his instructors hired to advise and act, to this day he and the rest of his class take great joy in watching them "die"! I also was wondering what your reaction to the "prom queen" line (my favorite from this) was going to be...Loved it!

Yes! I was in college in the SF Bay Area when this came out and the amount of times I heard "Welcome to the Rock" whenever we saw or were near Alcatraz Island was ridiculous. If I recall there was a surge in tourism to Alcatraz after this movie released.

I have always loved The Rock. I'm not a big fan of the films of Michael Bay, but this one has always stood as his best (for me, at least). Perfect mix of action, drama, and humor. Sean Connery and Nic Cage together is pure magic. This was a great reaction too - thank you!

"in a way the "Connery's last Bond" angle is probably the only interesting thing about the film anymore. I mean, half of the comments here mention it." I think it has more to do with the fact that they just reacted to Sean Connery in two Bond movies.

Another action movie, another great reaction. This tends to become a sure bet. 🙂 It's kind of fun how this started out as a love movie month but ended with 3 blast action movie reactions in a row.
I myself have mixed feelings towards this movie. Teenage me seeing it for the first time around 2000 absolutely loved it, similarly to other earlier Bay movies like Bad Boys and its sequel, or The Island. But Transformers kind of broke this relationship, being one of the most memorable in theatre disappointments I can remember. After that I kind of got tired of Bay's directing style and in retrospect this also stained his earlier work. Revisiting this movie after more than a decade just confirmed this.
But I think this film might still be his best despite its issues. I really like what they did with Hummel's character. Instead of being the typical one in a dozen, depraved villain, he is essentially an anti-villain with understandable and even sympathetic goals but resorting to unacceptable means. The casting of Ed Harris was a great choice. This is also true for the rest of the main cast, which is probably the main strength of the movie.
As others suggested already, the other two entries of the Nicolas Cage action trifecta would probably make for good reactions too. I'm personally more intrigued by how Cassie would react to all those characters and Cage's hair style in Con Air (1997), but their reaction to the over-the-top acting of Cage and Travolta in Face/Off (1997) could also be entertaining.
As for keeping with the Alcatraz theme, I am also throwing in my support for the Escape from Alcatraz (1979) starring Clint Eastwood.
PS: I'm always equally surprised by how old 90s movies are when you do the math. In my mind those are all "recent", yet a movie made in 1999 is now 24 years old. In comparison, for someone in 1999, that would equal to a movie made in 1975. For example, Jaws, which I always considered to be an "old" movie, even back in the 90s. I guess it means I'm getting old. 👴

Ed Harris is also really great as the lead in the abyss. Directed by James Cameron. It also has Michael Biehn (Reese from terminator) in it. You won’t be disappointed.

Did you recognize Michael Biehn? (Terminator- Sarah Connor's protector/ John Conner's Dad?) He was The lieutenant Commander who was in charge of the seals and got killed in the showers because he....."WOULD NOT GIVE THAT ORDER!" You'll see him play Johnny Ringo in tombstone when you watch that too. 👍🏻🙂
Glad to see you ladies enjoy the movie. Keep up the good work.

Always liked watching this movie as a fun, pulse pounding action flick. As you both pointed out, the paring of Sean Connery and Nic Cage was quite unique but ended up working so well. It is worth noting that Sean Connery's star power continued well into the 90s before his retirement from acting in the early 2000s. Both "Entrapment" and "Finding Forrester" are two of his notable final few films. Such an impressive career!
Amazing reaction as always! This was actually the first movie I was able to watch along fully since I had the DVD handy and the experience was even more enjoyable. Also, "Welcome to the rock", what a line indeed!

Great reaction ladies! That was a lot of fun! Probably my favorite Michael Bay movie.
I know you recognized Claire Forlani from Meet Joe Black, but did you recognize General Hummer’s second in command, Major Baxter? He was played by David Morse. Who you would know as Brutal in the Green Mile.
So glad you guys enjoyed the movie so much! I definitely think you should dive deeper into Sean and Nicholas’s filmography!
My personal recommendations would be Entrapment. Which is a heist movie starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. And for Nicholas. As others have mentioned, Con Air is a fun action flick. But I’d probably recommend for you guys Family Man. A Rom Com/fantasy starring Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni.

some pretty good theories out there about how this is connery as james bond that had been captured and held by the us government. look it up on youtube, its pretty compelling starting with the idea that 'james bond' is a code name and not the actual persons name which is why its played by different people.

Love that movie. Sean Connery was 65 yrs old in that movie and looks amazing. Still has the broad shoulders of his youth when he was a weight lifter in the 1950s. Rising Sun is a movie u should watch. Also the Presidio with a young Mark Harmon.

Great reaction ladies as always also loved Carly’s new hairstyle. As you’ve already watched Hunt For Red October (Connery’s best film imo) and a few of his other good movies. I think a you should check out is Highlander. Also his in a very underrated film called Medicine Man. Never really got the link to James Bond as him playing a spy is completely different to him being an ex S.A.S soldiers. But looking forward to seeing you react to Demolition Man as it’s another great action film but it is a little ridiculous at times but it’s all good fun and if you enjoy it you should check out Face/Off

I guess so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR-G84uF_9Y - I mean, they are the same score, right?). This YouTube video kept popping up for months until I finally watched it. Very well done and intriguing theory breakdown. It's cool to think this movie serves as a sort of unofficial epilogue to the Connery Bond- kind of add a level of distinction to each of the actors' run as 007.

NSNA is not a good movie, though. It has many great elements to it but it's essentially a much lesser remake of THUNDERBALL. I know that the film does have its fans and that's fine...more power to them. I'm not one of them.
Also, I dismiss NSNA out of loyalty to EON productions.
Matt Rose
2023-02-27 18:04:33 +0000 UTC
I know it's just for fun, but it kind of bugs me that in this age of fan theories overwhelming actual film criticism, this movie gets "attached" to the Bond series while an actual, albeit unofficial, Bond movie with Sean Connery like NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN tends to get dismissed. Still, THE ROCK (as enjoyable as it is) isn't really that great of a movie on its own, so in a way the "Connery's last Bond" angle is probably the only interesting thing about the film anymore. I mean, half of the comments here mention it.

You both seemed a little confused as to why so many of the Marines under Hummel's command are apparent psychopaths.
The theory I've come up with is that there were two factions under Hummel's command. The Loyalists, made up of men like Major Baxter who wanted to do right by their dead comrades. These men had served under Hummel for years and likely would've followed him to hell and back. Then you have what I call the Mercenaries. The men who showed up under the command of Captains Frye and Darrow. Who don't care about the cause at all, they're just in it for money. They were likely brought in because despite Hummel probably having a lot of Marines under his command that sympathized with the cause. Couldn't be trusted to be part of his plan for fear they were more loyal to the United States government. The Mercenaries probably make up the bunch that would take pleasure in gutting Goodspeed. While the Loyalists seem to largely make up the early casualties among Hummel's group. The guys guarding the morgue, the trio sent after Goodspeed and Mason in the tunnels and finally Sergeant Crisp. Who made the fatal mistake of betraying Hummel to side with Captains Frye and Darrow. By that point Hummel had no one left on his actual side to go along with his plan of bluffing. Everyone left alive was in the Mercenaries faction and only cared about the money.

Funniest line of the movie is when they say the FBI has changed since Hoover’s death. I worked for more than twenty years performing fraud investigations for the state and worked with the FBI a half dozen times. My experience was that, when they felt it was warranted, they would not hesitate to destroy evidence and they unfailingly acted in their own best interests regardless of little considerations like the law or morality. As an organization it’s been corrupt since it’s inception.

I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize a few of the other actors in this movie, for example, Michael Biegn who played the Navy Seals commander! you'd recognize him from "The Terminator" as Kyle Reese, and as Coropral Dwayne Hicks from "ALIENS" lol! plus I want to take a moment to say thank you to both you and Carly for putting a smile on my face tonight! Really surprised you didn't recognize Leo McGarry from The West Wing who was played by the late John Spencer. I think you were trying to place him though. Also the leader of the Seals team was played by Michael Biehn. You would know him as Reese from the original TERMINATOR and Corporal Hicks in ALIENS. Ed Harris is one of my favorite actors. Great reaction, PiB duo. Love this movie. Possibly Michael Bay's best. Watched it back in the day when it came out with my college friends and left the theater pumped. Ha ha ha. No. There are tunnels but the majority of them are sealed off. If you visit and happen to see the morgue. It's a small building on its way up to the cell house. You can't go In it but the door is see through. From the door if you look straight you can see the drawers for the bodies. If you look to your left there is a door. That door goes down a long way. Originally connecting to the other side of the island but currently the other end is sealed off.
Under the cell house there is another floor not accessible to the public called the citadel built during the Civil War when the island was an army base.

I’m having a really REALLY rough night so this is exactly what I needed right now. I just took 50mg of THC and I pulled my WORLD FAMOUS TSUNAMI POPCORN out of the pan.
That popcorn recipe is soy or teriyaki sauce, sriracha mixed in with the melted butter, and diced up seaweed sheets (i get the wasabi ones) and toss together. I’ll also add wasabi peas or those little hapi rice crackers wrapped in seaweed to change it up.

I was the night security guard on Alcatraz for a few years. The majority of this was not filmed on Alcatraz and most of the events are not even feasible on Alcatraz.
They did film one thing on Alcatraz. The hospital in Alcatraz (located above the cell house) was filmed on location. They covered the walls with a clear plastic coating so not to damage the walls from the action filming. However they forgot to also coat the ceiling. So if you ever do go to Alcatraz and visit the hospital area (only open during night tours) there are still blood splatters from the movie on the ceiling.
