Goldfinger (1964) - Full Reaction

We are having fun with Bond so far! Since SC is my first James Bond, it's now hard to imagine anyone else playing him! I def had to google some stuff after this, skin suffocation??? I can't decide if I liked FRWL or this one better. I think I liked Bond more in this but the plot better in FRWL!

Goldfinger (1964) - Full Reaction

Comments

Bond does NOT utter that famous line; "Bond, James Bond", in four movies; 'From Russia With Love', 'Thunderball, 'You Only Lives Twice' and 'Quantum of Solace'.

JPDotCom23

This was the first Bond movie I ever watched. As a kid I loved all the gadgets and of course the car is amazing. My grandma was from England and she loved the James Bond movies, especially Sean Connery’s. Thanks for the great reaction.

Ramah Mustangs

He says Bond, James Bond actually in the first one you all skipped when you first meet him [Dr. No]

Larry Darrell

That is an interesting point. Don't we give credit to a guy who is seeking to playing a spy for acting like a spy to get the role. In any case, Cassie has made it clear they are doing this one off. I just wish they would add Thunderball. When you watch Mike Meyers make fun of Bond movies with Austin Powers movies a lot of that is coming from Thunderball.

Richard Bourne

Lazenby told some real corkers to get the role. But that's exactly the stuff that we need in a Bond actor. Wit and Confidence.

ArsTropica

There was a concern about the violence& 007's license to kill, so humor was inserted whenever possible, lightening the mood; that is why all the jokes.

Steve H

Ok, there is a character named “Pussy Galore” and a henchman named “Oddjob” who kills people and cuts the heads off of statues all by throwing his Hat, which has a sharp metal razor brim. So Yes, it is OK to Laugh. It is Meant to be Fun. Here are words spoken by Guy Hamilton, the Director of Goldfinger - “Mr. Big (Goldfinger), somebody who, wants all the gold in the world, and is prepared to get some gangsters, and gas everybody. I mean, if you believe that, monkeys can fly. You’ve got to take it with a wonderful pinch of salt.” To talk about the Barn scene, which did get some laughter of disbelief at the shock of her strangling him until Bond fought his way into a kiss that turned into making out in the hay. Firstly, James Bond has many skills, but perhaps his best, most natural skill is his charm and charisma. He knows this and its effect on women. (Side note: I know it’s funny and seems unrealistic, but I knew someone with a Prowess in Seduction. My old roommate could and would Bed, 2 to 3 out of every 10 women that he met, within 0 to 3 days of meeting them. Not just women of a certain type either, but all types, all maturities and all classes. I would regularly see women looking at him from afar and then some would even approach him first. He could make dates with a stranger in under 3 minutes. It was like he had a Gift. Now, I am not supporting this way of life, nor do I condone it in any way. I am just saying, I was a witness.) So, Bond is certainly aware of his Prowess or Gift. He uses this as a weapon at times, to either disarm or even Turn an adversary over to his side. It doesn't always work, as you may see one day in a later Sean Connery Bond film. At the time of the Barn scene, Bond is being held captive by a Madman who, in less than 24 hours is going to Murder 60,000 innocent people and explode an atomic device inside of Fort Knox, creating economic chaos in the West. Bond does not know where the Bomb is and is led to believe that if anyone was to try and intercept the Bomb before it arrives at Fort Knox, it just may explode in an even worse location. He found out just before, that his Note for the CIA and tracking device were not discovered and destroyed. Bond looking a bit discouraged now, as Pussy, dressed in a revealing blouse, takes his arm and smilingly says, “Well, how ‘bout it handsome? Don’t you think it’s time we got to know each other socially?” This “New Ms. Galore” reveals an opportunity that Bond had thought before, might be an impossibility. Pussy says, “I’m completely defenseless.” Bond says, “So am I.” But, Perhaps Not. James Bond is alone and disarmed. If he was to break free and escape, he could lose Goldfinger and the plan could change, possibly for the worse. He must get word to the CIA and warn them, without Goldfinger finding out. He needs an Ally. “What would it take for you to see things my way?” Bond asks Pussy. “A lot more than you’ve got.” That’s a challenge for James Bond, and ultimately is his only option if he wants to save 60,000 innocent lives. He learns fast it won’t be easy. After all, she is “quite a girl.” James Bond jumps on Pussy and forces himself on her as she is resisting, only to end up making out. Out of context and seen through the lens of today or any day really, this is ridiculous to some and disturbing to others. But in the context of this film, James Bond was at the end of his rope and used his only available weapon to disarm and Turn an Enemy into an Ally. And It Worked. I mean really, how else could it have gone? He realized his female captor was resisting, and stopped, then apologized to her. And began thinking of another way to stop Goldfinger and Pussy from murdering 60,000 innocent lives, by the next morning, that doesn’t involve force towards his Female Captor, Pussy. I’m assuming beating her up until she agreed to help would not have been better than just forcing a make out session with her, but I could be wrong. What I do know for sure, is that it is all meant to be Fun and you shouldn’t forget that Pinch of Salt. And maybe a Spoon Full of Sugar as well. I’ll end with a couple quotes from Honor Blackman. On the name Pussy Galore, “It's very much tongue-in-cheek, isn't it? I mean, if you're so po-faced that you have to take that seriously, well, bad luck. But it was very funny.” And on Sean Connery, “I mean he is… I think without a doubt the sexiest man I ever met. He has a natural authority, charisma… he’s very virile.” I think she may of had Fun.

Larry Darrell

Also greatest line ever lol! "pussy did turn good"-Carly... yes I'm ten...

Tonio

I guess the best way to look at it is that these are the reason you have Mission Impossible, if they could have done back then what we could do now you wouldn't even know who Tom Cruise was. Of course that goes for like Fast and the Furious and any kind of spy drama. But it all goes back to casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, rear window. They had to rely more on suspense because they couldn't do the big booms.

Tonio

Yes, IN LIKE FLINT, and OUR MAN FLINT, are two classics with James Coburn as the character/hero Flint. Fun movies. I would classify them under Romance/Adventure.

Jorge De La Torriente

Goldfinger, the Man with the Golden Gun, Goldeneye and Goldmember. Wait. Has anyone seen in like Flint or any of the Matt Helm movies?

Martin Carter

Great reaction !!! Looking for to many, many more

Bill Maurer

Yep there is a good reason, they asked him to come back and he turned them down. OHMSS is one of the best films in the series, it has everything a bond film should have, as well as an emotional depth missing from a lot.

John Adams

@Gary David Holbrook, of course you can skip the ones out you have no interest in. I do know that very well from Octobers as someone who has nearly zero interest in horror movies. My whole point was that it does matter if there is such entry on the schedule once a month or once a week. I personally would love seeing Bond once a week but would be very unhappy getting MCU with the same pace, so I understand where this proposal was coming from.

Gábor Árki

Great Reaction to a Classic Bond Film ! Nice work Ladies :) can’t wait For the next one 👍🏼

Steve Hickman

Watching Sean Connery in these movies makes it hard to picture him as Harrison Ford’s bumbling father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade I laugh every time I see that movie when he says: They’re trying to kill us and Indy replys It happens to me all the time.

Tara

Also, the DB10 from SPECTRE is pretty freaking cool.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree, but it's not happening.

Stick Figure Studios

I'd love it if she watched THUNDERBALL too, but not in place of OHMSS. Despite it's issues, it's a pretty important entry and she wants to see every actor who played Bond, so she's doing OHMSS. Better just accept it.

Stick Figure Studios

Lazenby was a model not an actor and he lied to get the part. I couldn't stand when he broke the 4th wall the the beginning of the movie and they threw in some momentoes from the SC films to try and build a continuety, which it did not for me.

Richard Bourne

This was a fun Sunday afternoon watch! Looking forward to watching more. Brosnan was definitely my Bond, but you can’t not but celebrate the swagger that Sean Connery bought to the franchise!

Biggman83

My middle name is Sean because of this guy and my mom's crush on him.

Scott Macaulay

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is VERY important. It is the Anchor that holds ALL the James Bond Films together. Even Daniel Craig’s.

Larry Darrell

The first alpine scene is entering the Furka Pass even though the tracker claims they're near Lake Geneva. It's really 160+ miles away. The shot shows the old Belvedere Hotel and the Rhone glacier which is at about the same level as the hotel. 60 years later that glacier has receded significantly from the road. The spot where Tilly aims poorly now has a marker celebrating the movie scene. Goldfinger's Swiss foundry is really the Pilatus aircraft factory in Stans, and some of those buildings are still in use.

Bert Towle

I’m glad everyone is enjoying these but I can’t wait till we get to Daniel Craig

TinCan Cosmanaut

It's a tossup between the V8 Vantage and the DBS from OHMSS. I always felt the classic DB5 was overrated.

Matt Rose

While I agree that she should see THUNDERBALL, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE is an essential Bond film. It's arguably one of the best entries in the franchise, even with Lazenby in the lead (and I don't think he's all that bad).

Matt Rose

George Lazenby played Bond for only one movie and I think there is good reason for that. Although Telly Savalas (of Kojack fame, and "Who Loves'ya Baby" .. catchy but a bit creepy) gave an interesting take on Blofed, it was a weird plot and the one Bond movie where the 4th wall was broken at the beginning, which I did not like. I would suggest a poll to put "Thunderball" up against "Her Magesty's Secret Service" as I thnk you won't miss much not seeing the latter.

Richard Bourne

You should take your time and work your way thru all bond movies in order.

Captain Caveman

fun fact - When James tells Felix "they got a lot closer to you in Jamaica", that's a direct reference to events in Dr. No

Patrick Egan

Plus, Shirley and this song have a special place in my heart because she performed it when she guest-starred on the Muppet Show :)

Patrick Egan

Yes was extreme... up there with the submarine Lotus from The Spy who Loved Me.

Richard Bourne

For Your Eyes Only is easily my favorite of the Roger Moore movies. IIRC, it was a deliberate attempt to scale things back after the insanity of Moonraker.

Patrick Egan

No worries. I get where you’re coming from. I wasn’t offended or anything.

Robert da Spruce

The main title sequences are also an opportunity to set up some of the story themes and imagery of the upcoming adventure... especially since Daniel Kleinman took over doing them from GOLDENEYE on.

Stick Figure Studios

I get it. Sorry, didn't mean to Rant. This was just a point I had been wanting to make and no one else had made it yet. Saw an opportunity to explain a little of the Significance of the Main Titles Sequence. They will probably end up talking through all of them anyways, just like you said. They talked through the whole Footloose intro, and I didn't hear a word of them. I just get the feeling they don't think of Music the same way as me. If you Girls ever read this, I of course, still Luv ya. Perhaps by the end of your Bond Journey, the Music will have made an impression. In a Later film that you will see, there will be a Major Call Back to an earlier Bond Song.

Larry Darrell

The Fountainbleau. It's also the setting for the Jerry Lewis film THE BELLBOY.

Stick Figure Studios

Ah, yes. The V8 Vantage. It even makes an appearance in NO TIME TO DIE.

Stick Figure Studios

It was just a little joke. It was just a little reference to all the flack they got when they were discussing the snacks they were eating in one of the reactions. I guess people were upset that they were missing key moments of the film. So, I was just joking that the song would be a good time to discuss such things I actually enjoy the songs.

Robert da Spruce

The Bond Songs and Main Title Sequence are all part of the James Bond Experience and Fun of it all. Not really meant to be talked over, but instead talked about. Just my opinion. Even recently, during the Craig films, there was big talk about who would be doing the Bond Song for each film, and what it would sound like. They were written specifically for the film, and the anticipation of waiting to see what kind of song the Artist performs (did they use the Title of the Movie or not) during the Main Title Sequence, especially Maurice Binder's, who did every one from Thunderball to License to Kill, is one of the Funner parts of each film. There is even a documentary on Amazon now, The Sound of 007 (2022), which praises the Music, Scores and Songs of the James Bond films. Many of which were Top 40 Hits.

Larry Darrell

I wonder, does anyone else think that Cassie and Carly would love “Vision Quest (1985)”?

Uncle Phoenix

I think Our We is Bigger than your we.

Larry Darrell

Casino Royale (1967) is an influence in style and tone as well for Austin Powers.

Larry Darrell

The Aston Martin from The Living Daylights is my favourite Bond car

Odd Thomas

OK, here is one thing that helps make the movie "Goldfinger" so iconic, and that's the theme song sung by Shirley Bassey. This song was a regular on AM radio back in the 60's, but on top of that, it has maintained it' popular longevity throughout the years. Just check out the audience reception that Shirley Bassey receives when she sings "Goldfinger" in 1998. We know quality when we hear it! GOLDFINGER (1998) - Shirley Bassey (1998 Viva Diva TV Special) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oG6aavxyt8

Gary David Holbrook

My Shean Connery accshent is flawlesh.

Alex Villarreal

Fun reaction to a fun movie. A number of the older Bond movies have women with interesting names. Bond is known for being a ladies man and maintaining his calm.

Rick Williams

That was a good one. Goldfinger established the classic Bond movie conventions we have since come to expect. A shame not to do Thunderball because it was really huge. Gert Frobe who played Goldfinger didn't speak English. Harold Sakata, Oddjob, was a Korean wrestling star. I am kind surprised Cassie and Carly did not have more of a reaction to the character name "Pussy Galore"... gez, the 60s. A a kid in the 70s I actually stayed at the Miami hotel. It was really nice.

Richard Bourne

GOLD FINGA! Bah BAH bah!

Odd Thomas

Great reaction ladies! Watching y'all watch some of my favorite films is kinda like taking a nephew or niece to visit Disney World for the first time. Such a joy to see it through your eyes. A quick note regarding the absurdity of the Bond films: that's the nature of almost all action films. It's why such things don't happen in real life. Take your favorite action franchise for example - Mission Impossible. There's no way Ethan Hunt could cling to the top of a bullet train or the side of an airplane by his fingertips, if not for the "magic" of CGI. And as for the Bond villains seeming "cartoon-ish", they absolutely are. But then it was the most recent Mission Impossible movie that gave us a villain whose motivation for killing a good portion of the world's population was that it would bring people together. Pretty absurd. The truth is, regardless of era, these films have to be accepted in the spirit in which they were intended to be enjoyed properly. Thankfully, that's the spirit y'all have obviously adopted. Can't wait to continue to follow your journey through the Bond franchise. Cheers!

Just Plain Bob

Fun reaction ladies! And yes, the opening intro song for James Bond movies are always long. A perfect opportunity for extended snack discussions though! 😀 Looking forward to going on the Bond journey along with you guys!

Robert da Spruce

Gabor Arki, where in the heck are you coming from?! "Overwhelm(ing) people not interested in that specific movie series"? When I last checked, my friend, I don't remember you stating that anyone was holding a Walther PPK to your head. Guess what, you can always decide, completely on your own, what you choose to watch and what not to watch.

Gary David Holbrook

'Live and let Die' has a killer boat scene, pun intended :)

Celeste McAllister

It dates me, but I had a crush on Emma Peele when I was in high school. When your old crushes like Diana Rigg and Raquel Welch pass away you begin to feel old.😢

resinmonkey .

@Gabor Maybe they were trying to avoid a Batman 89 situation again. They know some viewers place older films close to their heart and they didn't want to offend anybody. Like you said though, as they progress through the series, they'll get more familiar and comfortable with it.

Nismo

I was also pleased that they were more amused by the sexism than offended. They are really approaching these films with the right attitude.

Stick Figure Studios

You might be interested in some Canadian connections to Goldfinger, beside the mention of Newfoundland that you noticed. Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny was born in Kitchener Ontario and raised in Toronto. Cec Linder (Felix) was born in Poland but raised in Timmons Ontario, and was active in Canadian Radio and Television. During part of World War Two, Ian Fleming was at Camp X (Now Intrepid Park in Whitby Ont.) where spies were trained and gadgets tested, and the people he met there influenced the characterization of Bond. In 1928 the St James Square Presbyterian Church merged with the Bond Street Congregational Church to form the St James-Bond United Church in Toronto. The story goes that Fleming stayed with a friend who lived across the street from the church.

Ted Little

I don't know which "we" you're referring to, but it doesn't include those of us who are actual Bond fans, who can see past the dated aspects of an old movie to its true quality and who have great interest in Bond movies made even before Daniel Craig came along. Based on the ladies' reaction, they seem to be enjoying these films too, so maybe they can just keep going at their current pace.

Stick Figure Studios

Whenever I saw her, I would say to myself, "It's Lady Holiday!"

Stick Figure Studios

He didn’t know James Bond would listen to his speech. He was basically telling (bragging I think) to people he knows will be dead and no longer a threat.

James1035

Whose this we you are talking about? The Craig movies are the ones I’m looking forward to the least

James1035

"Already so James Bondy!" Carly was right. This was the first James Bondy one! Loved this reaction. Look forward so much to more Bond movie reactions. Two points. This movie score is one of my all time favorites. You can always tell a John Barry score by the way it sounds, so some of his other films, Mary Queen of Scots, Body Heat, and even Somewhere in Time reminded me of his Bond scores. I liked how Cassie and Carly laughed at the rampant sexism in the film, and didn't clutch pearls. It is all in fun and not meant to be taken in an overly serious manner.

Mike LL

That is true. But maybe all the controls to seal off the room were inside the room? Anyway, it was probably mainly done as exposition for the audience.

Gábor Árki

Bond... James Bond is actually in Dr. No, lol... they just didn't redo it in the second movie

Jason Dolan

There was no reason for the fake speech though because they were already all gathered in the room and he could have gassed them without ever going in to meet them. I think Richard Maibaum just liked the scene from the book and wanted to keep it even though he had altered the plot.

Brad P

As much as I like Bond and enjoy their reaction, I'm supporting this idea in general. Reacting to only one movie of a franchise per month seems like a good compromise between keeping up the pace but not overwhelm people not interested in that specific movie series.

Gábor Árki

Yes when I was a kid I had the little Goldfinger car that shot plastic missiles out the front, had little rotating license plates, and had a bullet proof shield come out of the back hood just like the movie car. The next year, in 1965 when Thunderball came out, I was the youngest of the five children in our family, so my father only took my two oldest brothers to the theater to see Thunderball. Why? Because the ticket price was an astronomical $3! This was when the average movie ticket price was $1. They jacked up the prices for the new Bond film and they had lines around the block at the movie theaters!

Mike LL

i can’t make any promises but i can say that i’m pretty sure i’ll go back and watch dr number!

Cassie

Yes, Matt, I think this reaction will be quite popular on YouTube, showing the great interest and fan love for these movies.

Mike LL

Yes, my whole life, whenever I saw Diana Rigg, I would say to myself, there is Emma Peel of The Avengers! 💗💗💗 Beautiful bad ass woman!

Mike LL

Well said. Some Bond movies were more serious than others, but all had moments of humor. It is OK to laugh at the outlandishness sometimes.

Mike LL

I think it is more a Galaxy Quest situation. They have seen more than enough of the sixties Bond aesthetic to be into Austin Powers. They could do those at any time. Same for Star Trek. No need to wait!!

Mike LL

A View to a Kill is good if you are into Senior Citizen Bond. I'll be more into Spy Who Loved and For Your Eyes. Bring on Moore, Roger Moore after that George guy.

Mike LL

'We'? I think 'Some of us' would have been more appropriate considering that many of us on here are huge Bond fans and would be thrilled if she did them once per week. I respect your opinion, though.

Matt Rose

Lazenby was the victim of having a terrible manager who did two things: gave him incredibly bad advice and demanded too much from EON for George to continue. What George says in his documentary about 'just walking away' is re-writing history. Fun documentary, though.

Matt Rose

7 years old, classmate's birthday party, Hostess took us to see Mary Poppins, but it was sold out, what to do??? Let's watch Goldfinger, oops. My first theater experience and we had no idea about Pussy Galore, we were still getting Cootie shots if a girl touched us. Great experience for young boys, the gadgets were groundbreaking, the "Special Effects" were fantastic, we all ran out and got the associated toys, they even sold a toy pool table that flipped to reveal the map of Fort Knox. Mom tossed them years later along with all the other vintage toys. It is great how you two try to put these classics in perspective with the times. A fight did not end with one punch like today.

Paul Imrie

A View to a Kill

James UK

This is my favorite Bond film with Connery. Never cared for FRWL. I think upu would've enjoyed Dr. No

nick bell

If you like Bond you could also check out (afterwards) a miniseries called "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond". It looks at Bond author Ian Fleming's real life adventures that influenced the books.

Mike Gallagher

Can we spread out the Bond films or only do one actor/month? They haven't aged well and we have no interest until you get to Daniel Craig. We are willing to wait even if it takes another year or more lol. Thanks Cassie

Gideon James

I know we are lucky to get as many of the classics as we can, and I appreciate Cassie decided to include some of them at least. The majority simply ignores and skips the ones before Craig altogether or find them too old and weird. Fortunately, this is not the case, and they seem to enjoy them quite well. I just wish we could get even more, especially after these two reactions. 😃

Gábor Árki

I really enjoyed their reaction too, but I feel they just didn't loosen up enough to embrace some the jokes and ridiculousness. As Cassie even mentioned in the outro, she couldn't decide whether they meant it to be serious or joke and I think they were both holding back at times because of that, even though they shouldn't have to. So, Cassie, Carly, Bond movies are not meant to be taken too seriously (at least before Craig). Even the grittier, darker ones tend to include jokes and some comical relief, and the less serious ones can be borderline parody at times. Not to mention the now obviously dated aspects, like how sometimes Bond is treating women or how they all fall for him immediately or eventually. It is meant to be fun and entertainment, nothing more.

Gábor Árki

Aston Martin recently built the James bond DB5 with all the gadgets (minus the weapons and ejector seat). It's called the DB5 continuation & is yours for $3.6 million

John Drake

Goldfinger; the absolute best James Bond movie! I saw this movie while in elementary school back in the 60's. And yes even back then, we knew that this movie had a mixture of both suspense and camp (comedy), so Goldfinger's death was supposed to be both satisfying and funny. Guys, it's OK to laugh at some of the antics in the early 007 movies; that was the charm. Thank you for watching this movie!

Gary David Holbrook

This is the definitive Bond movie and Connery’s best performance. I’m happy that you like him as Bond. Even though I still like some of the others he is Bond.

James1035

Goldfinger needed them for their connections and as investors for his plan. He was keeping up the charade that they would make money on their investment even though he had no intention of ever actually paying them. That’s why he killed them. The speech actually makes sense in that scenario.

James1035

I’m with you with the watching of all 25, but it’s not happening. This is the next best way to do it

James1035

A View to a Kill (1985)

Gábor Árki

Cassie, tangentially off topic, but I was stationed at Fort Knox from 90-93. It's an active US Army base located around the Gold Depository. It's home of the Armor School, where soldiers are trained in Tank (Armor) tactics, and Cavalry tactics. It has the great Patton Museum (for General George Patton) and is just a little bit north of Elizabeth Town, which is where a movie is set that I think you've seen! It's just south of Louisville, KY, home of the Kentucky Derby! Time for a horse racing movie! Anyway... Goldfinger is always showing somewhere around Ft. Knox, in a theater, barracks, club... Because most of those buildings in the film are still there, and in use, so it's very familiar to the troops stationed there. That's all! Glad you liked it.

Jon Johns

I just rewatched the Lazenby documentary (on Hulu) again for the 3rd time. It's a well made doc, much more about his life, than OHMSS, but it gives enough Bond BHS to keep you interested. Lazenby is a singular man, I gotta say. Maybe more 'Bond' in attitude than any actor who portrayed him. He lived life his own way.

Jon Johns

Which one has Christopher Walken as the baddie?

Jon Johns

Yeah, I kind of already accepted it's not going to happen. Just made one last, most likely futile attempt now that they actually know what classic Bond movies are like and what they will be missing out on.

Gábor Árki

I think his plan was to gather them all in one place to take them out instead of paying them even what he owned. He would elaborate on his plan in that closed off room, then leave them there to discuss whether they wanted in or not and take them out with the gas. Except Solo almost ruined that plan by leaving.

Gábor Árki

Boat scenes?

Stick Figure Studios

I know how you feel, Gabor, but it ain't gonna happen. Just let it go. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

Well, I just finished the reaction and you ladies were terrific. I really enjoyed watching you enjoy this movie. You were caught up in the action, you were charmed by Sean Connery, you laughed at the more ridiculous parts... which is fine; it's perfectly okay to laugh along with these movies. They're not intended to be taken too seriously (especially not Roger Moore's tenure) or at least not until you get to the darker, more intense Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig films. As I said elsewhere, GOLDFINGER is the "time capsule Bond movie." It's when Bond became a pop culture icon, when his movies went from just being good spy stories to being a genre all their own. It was the third film in the series but the first to solidify the formula (it leans hard into the spectacle, the fantasy, the humor, etc). Carly was right that this is more what one expects a Bond movie to feel like. As Roger Ebert said, it may not be great art, but it's great entertainment. You both are well on your way now in the franchise. I know you plan to move on to 1969's ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, the first Bond movie to feature a different actor taking over the role of 007 (Australian model George Lazenby... not "James Lazer," Cassie!) and I'm very interested to see what you both think of that one, but I do hope that one day you consider returning to the other Connery films as they're all worth watching and he's never anything less than a commanding onscreen presence. As for OHMSS, I'll wait until later to say more about it, but it really is a very interesting and very significant Bond film and the backstory of how Lazenby won the role only to lose it after a single performance is fascinating. Looking forward to that reaction. Good job on this one. As always, keep up the good work. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Those are the two I'm voting for as well... although if OCTOPUSSY replaces FYEO, I won't complain.

Stick Figure Studios

Certainly TSWLM. But I’m torn between FYEO and Octopussy for the 2nd.

James UK

I'm also hoping that those two films win the Roger Moore poll.

Brad P

In Ian Fleming's novel, Goldfinger actually was planning to steal the gold from Fort Knox with the help of the mobsters. So you and Carly were completely correct that his speech to them doesn't really make any sense in the context of the film. The only thin explanation for it is to say that Goldfinger just really likes to hear himself talk.

Brad P

Haven't finished watching the reaction yet but very excited to see how it unfolds. As others have mentioned, this movie had many great elements that gradually became part of the Bond formula. You'll certainly start to pick up on these as you continue watching other films in the series. On a different note, I am now even more hyped for your reaction to the next movie starring "James Laser"! :D Joking aside, never stop being you, Cassie. Every reaction I see, I am reminded why I enjoy your channel so much.

Justin (CaptainProton)

The timing of watching The Rock next which some consider, in a fun and not totally serious way, to be kind of a pseudo-sequel to Connery's Bond is impeccable

Choof

You must watch Sean Connery in Thunderball, the best James Bond ever

Lana Gorgeous

After the first two entries where Bond was still finding its way, this is the first movie where Bond becomes a movie genre of its own and all the classic tropes have been solidified: pre-title action sequence, a title song, femme fatales, goofy gadgets, the iconic cars (Aston Martin DB5), stunning locations, cheesy/witty one liners, etc. If you were entertained by this one, I think it is fair to assume you will enjoy the rest of the series. Goldfinger is often considered to be the best Bond movie, or the very least, best of the classic ones. I think this is also aided by being the first of its kind inventing the "formula" and also due to being the most one-off movie in the Connery era with its own, unaffiliated villain played by German actor Gert Fröbe, who didn't speak English and had to be dubbed. This is also the time when Bond became a true international sensation. The first two movies did very well at the box office, but this one shattered them. Adjusted to inflation, it made $1.2 billion on a $30 million budget ($125 gross on $3 million in 1964). I personally always preferred FRWL, but I like your thinking and can fully get behind separating: Goldfinger is better at Connery being Bond, but in the overall plot FRWL is topping my list. My evil - and already spoiled - plan was to convince you to watch the first three and if you enjoy them, it might convince you to just continue with the rest. 😈 Now, that both my hunches have been confirmed and you are indeed having fun watching the classic Bonds, and FRWL is getting good views on YT (with almost at 100K the second best in the month so far), any chance to convince you to ditch the polls and just continue the series? Don't let the poll numbers fool you. People wanted to see a reaction to the first three, but it doesn't make the rest of Connery's movies bad. There is really no reason to rush through the series, no deadline to reach, you could take your time. For example, a three-year plan: - The remaining Connery and Lazenby movies this year (7) - Moore and Dalton next year (10) - Brosnan and Craig the year after (9) Also, no commitments should be given. If let's say Moore's Bond is not your cup of tea after the first movie, you can fall back to the poll approach instead of watching them all. I know 25 movies seems like a lot but checking back both SW (24 reactions so far) and MCU (15) have already had nearly this much reaction time, and most of those in parallel within a single year.

Neat fact: pretty sure all the boat scenes (and some of the others too) were filmed at dusk or at least not entirely at night. There was this 'inking' effect they'd do in post production to make all the scenes darker, because cameras at the time couldn't capture what they wanted in the definition they needed (and what ambient lighting for night scenes too, hardware wise), so the inking was a cheaper shot and better quality for viewing too. James bond isn't the only film to do this at the time, but definitely one of the more recognizable shots that just looks a liiiitttle odd to modern movie acclimated eyes lmao.

Austin Powers is mainly spoofing on the SPECTRE plot line. They only had a glimpse into that so far. To fully understand the jokes and references, they should really watch at least You Only Live Twice (1967), which was the main source and inspiration of the AP movies.

I’m glad you had fun with this. You don’t need to take it too seriously. There are deliberate comic relief moments in there and these peak in Roger Moore’s era. You can almost see his tongue in his cheek when he delivers some of his lines.

Honor Blackman, who played Pussy Galore, was in a TV show The Avengers" (not Marvel) and left to do Goldfinger. She was replaced by Dianna Rigg who would play Tracy in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Bond movies, starting with Goldfinger and ending when Daniel Craig took over, were always meant to be fun and mostly just about half serious. Though the stunts and locales, cars and gadgets were meant to wow, tongue was ALWAYS firmly in cheek.

Well, that was fun! Now that you’ve got a couple of Bonds under your belt, and Goldfinger in particular, I strongly recommend Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. A very funny satire of 60’s spy movies, especially Bond. I think you’ll like it.

You liked Bond more in this, what about the Bond girl?

I'm glad you're enjoying Bond so far! I can't wait till you get to my favorite Bond film, the first one I ever saw, Goldeneye! yes, I also played the N64 game version of it lol! still, it's my favorite out of all the Bond films I have seen in my life, though to be honest I haven't seen every single Bond film lol! continue having fun Cassie and Carly! much love and support🥰😁😉👍

A shame you can't do them all. Thunderball is a great movie with Connery. Since you're only doing two from each Bond actor, my votes for the two best Roger Moore movies go to "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "For Your Eyes Only."

For a different view of spy work, I recommend THE IPCRESS FILE, with Michael Caine. James Bond is what real spies wish their lives were like.

No, skin suffocation is not a real thing, you cant die from it. Extensive make up an the whole body prevents temperature regulation, which is at least very unpleasant, even dangerous.

"no mr. Bond, i expect you to die"

So this is the big leap into the world of Bond. This is the one that sets the template for much of what was to come and operates on that line between reality and fantasy. All that said, the next one for you is a bit of a C change. I’m intrigued as to how your meeting with Mr Lazenby goes!

"Bond. James Bond" became the iconic line in Dr. Number. I mean Dr. No 😄
