Sleepy Hollow (1999) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Ok I am giving you a Sleepy Hollow reaction instead of The Crow (The Crow will be next week now) I thought we needed to get this to the editor ASAP but I think in the end this will be a Patreon exclusive.

This is also not what I was expecting, it reminded me of The Princess Bride vibes maybe? With more decapitations. I liked the mystery of it all (even though I was feeling slow on the uptake) but I never knew of this story of the headless horseman so that was kind of cool!

Disclaimer: I took some cold medicine right before this and I had this weird reaction at the beginning where I was feeling dizzy and clammy but then it went away!

Sleepy Hollow (1999) - Full Reaction

Comments

Incredible visuals in this movie. Edward Scissorhands was a "weird" role before Sleepy Hollow.

Clay F

I'd say this and Edward Scissorhands are Burton's best

Odd Thomas

Johnny Depp's first "weird" role would have been 'Crybaby', a John Waters film (the guy who wrote 'Hairspray' and who played the flasher in the musical film of 'Hairspray'). Its a trip and worth watching. Depp and Christina Ricci had a longtime brother/sister relationship since about the 90s so they said doing this film was weird for the both of them and its probably why they never actually kiss in it. You would recognize the minister as the father from Beetlejuice and the doctor was the Emperor in Star Wars, and the father is actually Dumbledore. Overall this film has an amazing cast.

I'm glad you seem to have liked this. Among many others this was one I had posted in comments over the last couple months. If you ever rewatch it i think you will really enjoy it as the gory parts arent as shocking then and you can see the pieces of the mystery part coming together. Great Johny Depp performance and Christine Richi is enchanting in this. I also enjoy the young actor who played Nesmith. Lots of great performances all around. This is one I go back to every year at this time.

Canadianant

Hi Cassie, not sure if anyone posted this yet, but This film is based on the short story The Legend of Sleepy Hallow by Washington Irving which was published in 1819. The Headless Horseman at Disneyland actually isn’t from this film, it is from 1949’s Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad-which you should watch sometime-it’s a Disney animation, so it’s intended to be family friendly-though the Sleepy Hollow portion of the film really frightened me when I was little, so take that with grain of salt. You asked if this Depp’s first weird role-definitely not. Cry baby was probably the first, but Edward Scissorhands was his first pairing with Tim Burton. That would be a good watch-it is both Halloween and Christmas appropriate and as an added incentive-there is a good love story.

Tinkerbell

So when is the full reaction for “The Crow” going up?

Bartleby

I agree. I'm happy she liked especially since I know she is hesitant about Tim Burton. Its a good movie.

James1035

Yes I would have to agree that of all the movies watched here this season this is the perfect spooky scary Halloween movie. The atmosphere is just right for scary season viewing. I hadn't seen it for many years, and will remember it next year and watch this excellent reaction again!

Mike LL

OMG!!!🤣🤣🤣 Cassie, your reaction to this was exactly as I predicted! I could not stop laughing at your freaked out reactions, that was so funny and awesome! you may be more familiar with the Headless Horseman thanks to Disneyland and all, but the OG story is one of Colonial America's oldest and chilling ghost stories that has stood the test of time more than two centuries later, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving! just so you know, Sleepy Hollow is a realy place back east in the Hudson Islands north of New York State! Irving based his characters he created off of real people he knew! I'm sure someone has already said this, but here's a low down of the story! the story is about Ichabod Crane, the newly appointed school master of Sleepy Hollow who meets the lovely and wealthiest daughter of the town, Katrina Van Tassel! who then gets caught in a love triangle with her against his rival Brahm "Bones" Van Brunt who also desires Katrina, he's more of the town jokester! later in the story when all Hallow's Eve rolls around, Brahm tells ghost stories about the Headless Horseman who was the spirit of a Hessian Mercenary who fought in the battle of White Plains during the American Revolution, who then lost his head do to a wayward American cannon ball that decapitated him! his body was then laid to rest in the Dutch church cemetary, and every year on Halloween night, he rises from the grave looking for his missing head and will run down anyone unfortunate to cross his path and take their head! later that same night as Ichabod was making his way home on his horse Gunpowder, he went through the hollow where the Horseman was said to roam around, he then came across another rider on a black stallion, upon closer inspection, he noticed his head was missing and held a lit pumpkin, Ichabod fled in terror as fast as he could through the hollow and the Horseman riding closely behind him, Ichabod made his way to the bridge where it is said that the Horseman could not cross and would be held at bay! Ichabod made his way across the bridge, but he looked behind him to see if the spectre was still there, and then the Horseman threw his Jack 'O' Lantern at Ichabod, throwing him to the ground! the next morning, Ichabods hat and saddle was found, and close beside it, a shattered pumpkin, but there was no trace of the school master! rumors believed that Ichabod was still alive and married a wealthy widow in another county, though the Dutch wives firmly believed that school master was spirited away by the Headless Horseman, and his melancholy spirit haunts the bridge! as for Katrina, she married Brahm! this story still gives me chills to this day, but I can't help myself but enjoy it! so glad you at least liked this movie, yes I know it was tough to pick the genre this was supposed to be in, but that was the intention! they wanted a perfect balance between; Horror, Romance, Super Natural, Comedy, and Action, and in my opinion it worked! this is literally my favorite horror movie, one of the rare ones that has a happy ending lol! I know the scene when that family including the kid gets killed was a little extreme, but at least they didn't show it or else that would've been going to far! as for the actors you recognized; Christopher Lee as the Judge (aka Saruman in LOTR), Michael Gambon as Baltus (aka Dumbledore in HP 3-8), Ian McDirmid as Doctor Lancaster (aka Emperor Palpatine in STAR WARS), Jeffery Jones as Reverend Stingwick (aka the Principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Michael Gough as Notery Hardenbrook (aka Alfred in Batman) and Miranda Richardson as Lady Van Tassel (aka Misses Tweety from Chicken Run)! nice job at recognizing Richard Griffiths from Harry Potter and Christopher Walken who played the Horseman, however, the stuntman in the scenes where the Horseman was headless was played by Ray Park aka Darth Maul from STAR WARS lol! [sigh] what a comment lol! anyway, really enjoyed this reaction Cassie, glad you at least liked it lol! can't wait for more reactions, Happy Halloween since it's almost here lol! much love and support and stay classy Cassie🎃🥰😁😉👍

Johnny Depp jokingly says he based his performance on part teenage girl, part Angela Lansbury (voice of Mrs. Potts from Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST). Depp was convinced the studio was going to fire him for his weird performance. This and ED WOOD are my favorite Tim Burton movies. His quirky style and tone work well with this vehicle. And food for thought: does the final third of EDWARD SCISSORHANDS qualify as a Christmas movie? Lot's of folks probably think so. Noticed that the climax takes place in a large windmill that burns down, like 1931's FRANKENSTEIN. Wouldn't have caught that without the recent movie reactions.

Alex Villarreal

The Disneyland stuff is in reference to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow section of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad cartoon from 1949. That might be a good one to watch with your children on Halloween, idk.

Trembling Colors

I think she would have to watch Desperado first before she watches Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Tim Raths

As a Johnny Depp fanatic I suggest the following: Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd (a musical in case they aren’t your thing), the live action Alice in Wonderland, Public Enemies, Finding Neverland, From Hell, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Chocolat, Benny and Joon, and What’s eating Gilbert Grape. If you feel like going super weird Ed Wood, Fear and loathing in Las Vegas or the Rum Diaries would be options, but i don’t suggest starting with those. The Tourist got a lot of flack as a not very good movie, but both Depp and Angelina Jolie are fun to watch and it feels a lot like an older Hollywood caper movie from the 50s and 60s with a little romance thrown in-it’s not a great movie, but it is a fun watch.

Tinkerbell

let's not forget Don Juan DeMarco Great insights on love,

Louis Wilberger

Cassie, I didn't know you were unfamiliar with Johnny Depp's work. Well we're here to help. Of course Edward Scissorhands (1990), and yes part of it, not all of it, has to do with Christmas. Tim Burton did three films in the early 90s featuring Christmas, Batman Returns (1992) and A Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), being the other two. Getting back to Johhny Depp. Some of my favorites are Benny & Joon (you'll like this one), Donnie Brasco (True Story), Blow (True Story), and Public Enemies (Based on a True Story). There is a "Slice of Life" drama, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, with a young Leonardo Dicaprio in his first Oscar nominated role. An "Edge of your Seat" thriller, Nick of Time. A film that is oddly relaxing, given the subject matter, The Ninth Gate. A film about Jack the Ripper, which is another dark period detective film, From Hell. I've never seen Ed Wood or Chocolat, but intend to very soon, always heard good things. These were all (besides Public Enemies) before Jack Sparrow. Oh and lastly, some have mentioned that Edward Scissorhands was Johnny Depp's first weird role. I'd have to argue that and say Cry-Baby (1990), released earlier the same year as Scissorhands, was his first weird role. Johhny Depp in the title role of Cry-Baby, granted, not as weird as Edward, but not a normal character either. The whole film is unique and offbeat. It's a musical as well. One of my favorites growing up. John Waters wrote and directed it, and he is certainly an offbeat filmmaker and a strange character himself. Cry-Baby and the film he wrote and directed two years earlier, Hairspray (1988), were the tamest of his films up to that point. I think you mentioned somewhere you saw Hairspray, but most likely it was the remake in 2007. Johnny Depp took the roles of Cry-Baby and Edward Scissorhands in order to stave off the possibility of being typecast as a TV heartthrob. It almost worked. At least he got away from the TV part. Oh yeah, did anyone mention Johnny Depp was the star of a TV show, 21 Jump Street, about undercover cops in high school, for 4 seasons (1987 - 1990).

Larry Darrell

A little bit of trivia: the stuntman who played the Horseman for most of the shots in this movie was Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I.

John Casamassa

oooh that sweet little redhead 💔💔 I think for me, this would be the same experience as you and I will enjoy it even more in the rewatches, less trying to figure things out and more appreciating the things you mention, like the atmosphere and costumes etc.

Cassie

i’ve never even heard of that one? it’s a tim burton romcom?

Cassie

oooh is it animated?

Cassie

omg wow, i knew i recognized a lot but could t place most of them!

Cassie

yes he was, i can’t tell if so much of “that” is him or actual acting you know?

Cassie

officially on my bucket list now! so this was a book first right? i had no idea sleepy hollow was an actual place!

Cassie

Cassie, thanks for taking me back to a movie that I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Great reaction. Another Johnny Depp movie you would like is, The Tourist. And it is safe for Carly

Rick Williams

For me, picking Danny Elfman's best scores like picking John Williams' best score: a virtually impossible task. This is a great one though.

Stick Figure Studios

“His facial expressions…” One of the many reasons we ❤️ Johnny Depp. 😊 This is a personal favorite of mine so I loved getting to experience it with one of my favorite reactors. Like you, Cassie, I’m not a huge Tim Burton fan, although I can appreciate the quality of his work, but this story along with the combination of this great cast really does it for me. Glad you appreciated it!

Aimee

dark shadows

zynjams

Johnny Depp 101 Edward Scissorhands (that's the first really WEIRD role) What's Eating Gilbert Grape Benny & Joon Ed Wood Donnie Brasco Chocolat Sweeney Todd Secret Window Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Black Mass and for good measure... Platoon There are others as well but after Pirates of the Caribbean and Sleepy Hollow and A Nightmare on Elm Street, those are probably the most substantial ones.

Jason Dolan

I still say that Burton's masterpiece is ED WOOD. The acting, the direction...it's all there, and boy is it funny. It's definitely Johnny Depp's best performance, and that's saying something.

Matt Rose

This and Edward Scissorhands really hold up for me, Beetlejuice is a childhood favorite of mine but I get why Cassie didn't like it, she didn't grow up with it and probably doesn't have the lifelong crush on Winona Ryder that I have lol. Great choice and great reaction (can't wait for The Crow!).

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

This is really saying something but I think this could be Tim Burton's best looking film, ever! The cinematography is so awesome! Props to Emmanuel Lubezki, the Director of Photography on this film. He's one of the very best in the business. And extremely effective and perfect score by Danny Elfman. One of his most underrated scores, I think. This has always been one of my favorite Burton films and one of my favorite films for this Halloween time of year.

Aaron Hawkins

When I first saw this in the theater I was not too enamored of it. I enjoyed the first half but thought it just kind went downhill from there. Over the years, though, with several more rewatches, I've grown far more fond of it. Don't feel bad about not being able to follow the mystery/conspiracy plot because it is needlessly convoluted and ultimately irrelevant. The real reason to see this movie is not its story, but it's style: its tangible folk-Gothic atmosphere (the creepy, dilapidated houses of the tiny town of Sleepy Hollow are a triumph of art design), the striking visuals (the brilliant cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki often makes the movie look almost black-and-white with the occasional punctuations of vivid -- practically lurid -- color that just pops out against it... particularly the blood, which is plentiful), its sinister music score by Danny Elfman, the gorgeous costumes by Colleen Atwood, the terrific cast, its occasionally dark but still somewhat goofy sense of humor and its masterfully executed set pieces. As others have mentioned, this is Burton's Hammer film. He even got Hammer icon Christopher Lee (a.k.a. Saruman from LORD OF THE RINGS and Count Dukoo from the STAR WARS prequels) to appear in it early. I knew you'd respond well to the love story and to Johnny Depp's hilariously eccentric character. Not his very first "weird" performance -- that would be another Tim Burton collaboration EDWARD SCISSORHANDS -- but it would be one of his last ones before his stardom rocketed into the stratosphere with Jack Sparrow. I also knew you'd have difficulty with *SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IT* the murder of the child (even though the movie mercifully doesn't show it), but this film does demonstrate a sort of mathematical principle that I've noticed in movies and have developed a theory about. I unimaginatively call it the "child lost, child saved" principle. Namely, if a child is killed sometime within the first half of a film, then another child must be spared/saved from danger/death later on in the same film. This restores some weird sort "balance" in the eyes of the audience... like "I'm upset that the first child died, but at least this one got away." Some examples of movies you've seen already that follow this principle are JAWS, THE UNTOUCHABLES and BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. Anyway, a typically great reaction. Thank you as always. Keep up the good work. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Johnny Depp teamed up with Tim Burton again in Sweeny Todd. Another romantic suspense horror ish dark comedy ish movie. And a great musical to boot. Also amazed you haven't seen Benny and Joon (if you really haven't) - perhaps his best, most genuine (if somewhat unorthodox) RomCom. Exquisite fun, that one.

David Collins

oh man I cannot wait to watch your reaction to this movie, I will soon! plus I can't wait to see your YT edit of this as well! this is by far my favorite horror/Halloween themed movie ever! like everyone else, I grew up on the Disney version of the story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", while this is more set being like a crime/mystery thriller, deviating from the original story, but it's also just "Tim Burton's" Sleepy Hollow, however this still retains a lot of the creepy and bone chilling atmosphere that the orginal story had in my opinion at least lol! I remember seeing this movie in the theatre when it came out, I was 11 when I saw it with my father! I was already scared of the Headless Horseman before this, thanks to the Disney version, but this just further made me more spooked lol🤣 yet I cannot help but feel delighted in the scares of this movie lol! can't wait to watch it and laugh at/with your reactions lol! so glad you watched this, I'll be watching this myself on Halloween night muahahahaha lol!🥰😁😉👍🎃

Wesley White

I live right by Sleepy Hollow too and have always wanted to go around this time but just never got around to it. Maybe I'll go this week before the month is up.

Chip MC

Nice blend of Wizards a Muggle and Sith Lords this movie has. Is the only Disney version the one with mr toad? 2 shorts in 1 little movie I think from like the 50s.

Sean Stuart

There aren’t many I could think would be able to be the Horseman. The only other one who could have done it I think might have been Frank Langella

GamerGal8684

Another great one to see is the Disney version of the tale. Short, atmospheric, fun, and faithful to the original story!

Ben Livingstone

Awesome I can’t wait you’re gonna love the crow I guarantee it

Marvin dishman

I personally think this is Danny Elfman's best music score to this day. ~Brilliant from beginning to end.

Prof. Writhms

She often doesn’t watch end credits so her “watch” time is almost always shorter than the movie.

MikeLL

Lots of familiar faces in this one - The Police chief at the beginning was Christopher Lee aka Saruman and Count Dooku -The town doctor was Ian McDirmand aka Emperor Palpatine - Baltus Van Tassel was Michael Gambon aka Dumbledore

Choof

Holy shit so excited I love this movie

Jason Dolan

The actor who played the Magistrate plays a old English squire in the miniseries, Wives and Daughters, which you would totally love.

Togre

I wasn't sure if you would go for this one but it has a great cast. Depp was perfect for Ichabod. Should check out the book. Pretty good :)

GamerGal8684

The reaction is 1:43, my copy is 1:45, I take it there are multiple versions?

Mike Lemon

OH MY GOD!!!!

MatthewBrown74m

Well, I think she's hated all the other Tim Burton movies (edit- pending this one- watching now), so the bar isn't that high.

Mike Lemon

Edward Scissorhands for Christmas would be a no-brainer. That was Johnny's first 'weird' role, and I'm pretty sure it'll be your fav Tim Burton movie.

Shehab Dawoud

I’ve been waiting for this reaction for a LONG time! Sleepy Hollow is an actual town here in upstate New York. Every year they have a Halloween celebration, including a person dressed in costume as the headless horseman riding around the town on horseback. Since the covid-19 pandemic, it has been cancelled but this year will be back in full swing. That covered bridge in the movie is actually there. You take a hayride across it and guess who shows up to give chase. If you’re ever in New York around this time of year, check it out. It’s a lot of fun! 🎃🐴

Prof. Writhms

Sounds good Cassie thanks for keeping us entertained regardless of what the movie is :)

Johnny Liu

An underrated horror gem with a splash of mystery. And one good jump scare.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

I know two... can't remember the third but I won't spoil it for others.

Robin Craft

LOL, I confused this with Hollow Man.

John Cranberry

Christopher Walken seemed an appropriate casting choice, lol

JL_83

Oooo super stoked for your Crow reaction, Cassie! That movie has a very special place in my heart. <3

Rue

I live the town one over from Sleepy Hallow here in NY. During October that town becomes alive, pumpkins everywhere. The also have a headless horseman come running through the cemetery at night at random scaring all the visitors visiting Washington Irving’s grave. It’s quite an experience.

Alex Gorell

Hope you’re starting to finally feel better😊

Cole Jennett

Aw, yes! I didn't even realize this was on the schedule! I love this movie! Just the atmospheric feel of it...so spooky and cool 😄

Matt Winchester

Also fun fact: there were three "Sith Lord" actors in this film. Know who they were??

Todzilla

I'm skipping her written review at the top!! Don't want any spoilers!😅

Todzilla

Love this movie.
