Hi Hi hi friends, sorry this update is coming out on a Wednesday! Is this week insane for anyone else? Trying to enjoy and soak up the Christmas spirit but also do all the fun and not so fun things on that to-do list is a lot of hubbub and jingle jangle ;/
Ok so the recording of the "It's a Wonderful Life" watch along is up. I cannot believe I have never seen that. It was one of those movies that I won't ever forget and vow to watch every year.
Tonight, "Field of Dreams" will be up (with Carly) and then "The Apartment" as well!
I am deciding between a Westerns Bracket or a Foreign Movies Bracket to go up right after Christmas. I am doing "Dances with Wolves" and "Ben Hur" (winners from the live pillowcase pull) early in January and heard they are western-ish? So maybe Foreign Movies? Help me decide.
ALSO a very kind and generous patron on here would like to keep the Starbucks gift card rolling and donated $100 to it! I'll post the barcode below, if you just screenshot it and show it at Starbucks you can enjoy a free coffee or my fav caramel apple cider this Christmas week. I will update here when it is all gone. You guys are all just the best and have truly changed my life this year. I have never felt like I have had so many friends and people to share and connect with and it is such a blessing!
Merry Christmas, love to you all,
Cassie

2021-12-27 05:56:26 +0000 UTCFor the Western bracket, given your appreciation of Grace Kelly: High Noon (1952).

2021-12-26 14:39:48 +0000 UTCExcellent suggestions for the bracket, Gabor. If Cassie enjoys Dances with Wolves, I could cheat and add The Postman (1997) as a "neo-western" :-), and Ip Man (2008) is certainly a foreign film.

2021-12-25 05:42:53 +0000 UTCHey thanks for the coffee offer. I tried to have Starbucks delivered but I don't think they do it for delivery, ah shoot. For foreign movies they should be in another language that would be great. Okay what would be a good suggestion, La Dolce Vita? (1960 - Italian?) I haven't seen that one actually so not a serious suggestion. Here are some titles I can think of, SOLARIS (1972) - Russian BANDITS (1997) - German THE MYSTERY OF RAMPO (1994) - Japanese THE HOST (2006) - Korean HERO (2002) - Chinese THE HIDDEN FORTRESS (1958) - Japanese BAAHUBALI (2015) - Indian language Telugu or Tamil TROLLHUNTER (2010) - Norwegian If I had to pick 3 from that list I'd say Bandits, The Host and Hero.

2021-12-24 01:12:04 +0000 UTCI'd suggest in the western bracket High Plains drifter or pale rider and any other spaghetti western and the "outlaw Josie wales." all Clint Eastwood's best work And Merry christmas to you and yours

2021-12-23 17:53:12 +0000 UTCThank you so much for this channel - somehow watching your first time viewing experience makes me relive my own first time experiences. What is your proces for chosing film for a bracket - do you only include films that we suggest, or... You will definitely need to do a western bracket, but I also strongly support a foreign movies bracket, although you could easily include foreign movies in most other brackets. When you reacted to the spiderman no way home trailer, it made me wonder if you have seen the animated "Into the Spiderverse", and also if animated movies could be a bracket, or if you have seen these? For a western bracket I would suggest the following: - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Once Upon a Time in the West - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Unforgiven - The Magnificent Seven (remake of a Japanese "The Seven Samurai" from the 50s) For the Foreign Movie bracket I would suggest: - Seven Samurai (Japan) - Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwan) - Dangal (India) - Cinema Paradiso (Italy) - Babettes Feast (Denmark) As a subgenre I would suggest Asian Martial Arts - here are four favourites, that I think you would enjoy, as they are not too graphic: - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (China) - Hero (China) - Drunken Master (Hong Kong) - Kungfu Hustle (Hong Kong) The first is also a romance, and the last two are also comedies Happy Holidays

2021-12-23 16:08:38 +0000 UTCHondo and McLintock! Two of my favorite westerns. Also The River Of No Return with Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe

2021-12-23 13:35:25 +0000 UTCDancing with Wolves is expected early next year, it was one of the lucky pillowcase picks during a Christmas live. I know Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill are quite big in Germany too. In Hungary their movies are traditionally shown almost every holiday. Sadly, they do the same here too. Some of their movies got re-dubbed for recent television screenings and usually they are inferior to the original dub. I know 'E poi lo chiamarono il magnifico' very well. Sadly, this is their only movie that got released here on Blu-ray. Every other is only available on subpar DVD releases. So I got most of their movies in bootleg versions from torrent where some are taking the transfers from a German/Italian BD and syncing the Hungarian dub. Pretty much these are the only movies left I'm still watching with a dub and not with the original. And some Louis de Funès ones like the Gendarme movies. They really outdid themselves with the quality of the translation and dialogue here too. I did check out some of their movies in English but seemed like very plainly delivered compared to the dub and just not the same experience. The usual Hungarian voice of Bud Spencer is Istvan Bujtor. He is usually called the 'Hungarian Bud Spencer' and kind of resembles his counterpart: https://hetediksor.hu/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/bud-bujtor.jpg He even did a couple knock off movies following a similar formula, like 'The Pagan Madonna'.

2021-12-23 13:07:27 +0000 UTCVery nice suggestions, I have some additional western: - Dancing with Wolves (1990) as a more dramatic western - El Dorado (1966) as a lighter, ironic/comedic western Respective 'They Call Me Trinity', here in Germany exist two different synchronisations. The first is from 1971 and has much less dialogue and jokes/funny sayings than the second version from 1981. And until a few years ago I didn't know that there exist these two different versions since they always show the second on televison. So I'm quite not sure how the synch in English is. 🤔 Another very funny movie with Terence Hill is 'E poi lo chiamarono il magnifico' (1972; english title 'Man of the East' according to Wiki) and at least in German very funny, often intelligent and also subtle dialogues. 😊

2021-12-23 08:21:57 +0000 UTCMy suggestions for western that I think should definitely be included in the bracket: - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966): although it is the third and best installment of the "Dollars Trilogy" the movies are not connected story-wise, so can be watched without the other two - Unforgiven (1992) - The Wild Bunch (1969) - The Magnificent Seven (1960) - Tombstone (1993) - Once Upon a Time in the West (1968): might be better to watch some "classic" westerns before this one Lighter, comedic westerns: - Maverick (1994) - Three Amigos! (1986) - Blazing Saddles (1974) - They Call Me Trinity (1970): not sure whether this is as good in English because I've only ever seen it with an incredible Hungarian dub a few dozen times There are few that haven't seen yet but interested in: - High Noon (1952) - Rio Bravo (1959) - The Searchers (1956) For the foreign movie bucket: - Das Boot (1981) - Das Leben der Anderen (2006) - Good Bye Lenin! (2003) - Die Welle (2008) - Intouchables (2011) - La Grande Vadrouille (1966): this doesn't seem to be available on streaming in the US so recommending another Louis de Funès classic which is - Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob (1973)
