(An unalerted character is one who has no idea that they should be on the lookout for anything in particular. A guard doing their rounds on a quiet night is unalerted. Certain effects are much more impactful when applied to an unalerted character, such as the active skill Assassinate, which deals triple damage to unalerted targets.)

(An alerted character can still be unaware. An unaware character is one who is not aware of a specific person or event. A guard responding to an alarm is alerted, but may still be unaware of the enemy hiding in stealth waiting to ambush them.
