Which build do you think?

Key differences

Current build:

Charge attacks, the ability to fly short distances.
Ranged attacks deal a devastating amount of damage by drawing enemies through the tracer fire. Deals acid+fire dmg. Allows Enemy repositioning.

Frost build:

After multipliers =
18 seconds of 67% slow on hit. (quite powerful)
3% life steal

I feel as though the frost build is nastier in combat, but the ability to fly is hard to ignore, and the damage output is higher on the current build.

But...Will doesn't exactly need a high damage build because he just got a nuker and has a sniper too.

hard to decide.

Feel free to weigh in on this.

Only the ring of Accuracy will be lost if he switches builds, the mask and shoes will go into storage.

Frost build sounds crazy boring

yosef melul

Couple things, I don’t think survivability is the thing holding Will back right now. The ability to reposition enemies allows for very creative strategy especially with homefield advantage. Mobility is king for both defense and offense so I’d go for the flight. The Frost build is better for an assassin class focused on single target damage/stunning.

ParadoxFox

Late to the game, but I’d rather his build evolves gradually than a rapid shift to frost. Plus, who ever wants to be the frost guy? You want to be the fire guy! I hope that Will does’t give up the ghost mask for a few reasons: 1) it’s goofy, 2) it makes him William Oh, where other one handed guys aren’t. 3) I have this suspicion that like it can hide criminals from the Tower, it hides Will from others, the gods, the tower - and it could be a point that the guys chasing him can only chase and not know where he is because the mask is preventing divination. In fact, until now seeing this build post - that’s where I thought you were going with this. I’d love to see his build go more into what he is. My only issue at the moment is it feels like he’s so far along, and there’s a couple of things I’d hate to see him give up unless the new items themed in (the boots and the mask). Next he needs a goat hide cloak that gives him camouflage, being the sneakidy infiltrator he barely is. I’d also love to see him get another point of mountain goat and gain the ability to navigate any terrain, climb any walls, walk on the roof, with zero penalty - he’d need to keep the mask to have the second point?

Andrew Tobin

Have the {Phantom Hand} ability be called juggling.

Donovan

I also think it would be a great idea for him to get a greater ring of every kind of elemental damage. Having that versatility is important. I also wonder if there are better rings than Greater, maybe Grand?

Fleisch

I would say that it depends on the story, mobility is kind in general but its much MUCH more effective when he is alone or in complicated environments (for example on the underground exploration at the beginning, his float towards anywhere would have been incredibly broken). If there are needs to do that kind of stuff then current build, if not changing to a frost build is also good.

Will Iam

Current build is great and a lot of fun but his team really doesn’t need the firepower. Yes the repositioning is strong as a battlefield control but the slow fits that category as well and does a better job as support in my opinion.

Fuyge

The repositioning is really powerful with a team and hard to give up since he can play the entire battlefield for his team. Otherwise I'd go frost. He can always grab the mask to fly

Jake

Can’t he get to the point where he flings animals into the air and they flop dead on the ground? Am I missing something? Because to me, this is overpowered. Even with flying beasts, firstly you mess up their rhythm AND you can do damage with bigger balls and the acid ring. I think he should keep going down the path he is taking with his current relics. Maybe get better bracers because it doesn’t seem they actually do that much damage.

Fleisch

Current build is fun

Alex

They could do that, but why would they possibly want to do something so ass backwards?

austin kutz

No, but you do consume them? The sacrifice also consumes the relic.

Akkido

Now that the party has a dedicated scout / trailblazer, can't Alicia spec into being the nuker (and getting some more survivability) and have Mason be an aoe control/damage specialist?

Krosh

Do you sacrifice a health potion?

Cyrus McEnnis

The relic is "consumed" by the sacrificial act, right?

Akkido

Flying around and using mage hand projectiles to drag opponents around the battlefield feels both more cinematic and more synergistic with Loth and the taunter.

Ano Ano

Whatever lets the character be the most creative. The flying stuff has been great to read, because it's *creative*. If the frost is just "then I dodge until you're frozen", that's good for one, maybe two scenes, even if it's a better build from a "game" perspective. I'm not here to read about William Oh min-maxing his DPS to the top. I'm here to read about William Oh being a ruthless, unstoppable weasel who turns seemingly useless or innocuous abilities into go-fuck-yourself smackdowns.

Ranger Science

I think I've pointed this out previously when it's been bought up, but the wording on the ability is "sacrifice", not "consume". As much as I'd _love_ you to be right, I don't think it's going to fly

Cyrus McEnnis

I feel like both builds are wrong but the goat mask is a must unless he finds an equivalent setup. If he got that jump ability it could be similar to the fly ability and that's with no items. I also feel like you should lean into the goat stomach thing more I mean sourdough and it, I'm sensing some kinda synergy there. Plus in my head William is supposed to be fast acrobatic possibly stealthy more of a kill with a thousand cuts than one powerful move, I also see him being more physically hands on then an archer type.

Benjamin Collins

Ah, forgot about the scaling boost from the Phantom Hand. But still, the point stands - the ability to pull opponents around at will and reposition the battlefield is on the whole better than a Freeze build that effectively locks a single target out of a fight - largely because while he's doing that Will is out of the fight as well. If it was an AOE frost build then the math would tilt towards it more heavily, but right now Will's build has the ability to define the battlefield with mobility modifiers for days. That's proven to be incredibly useful. This isn't the situation with his last soft-set, where effectively he traded it to Travis for Loth's life. This time he'd be moving from a gear set that's proven incredibly effective and in the process throwing away a relic that's ludicrously overpowered for little long-term gain. I just don't see Will doing that on a whim, certainly not without talking to Loth, unless something external pushes him hard to make that call.

Cyrus McEnnis

I like the way you think

Benjamin Collins

If this was actually DnD it's like the difference between a meta-build and a real character. There's always going to be the best race/abilities/items but that doesn't always or even often make for the best character.

Notcreepycreeper

Random awestruck love interest- "Want to come to bed William?" William- "The goat mask stays on"

Prinny Knight

Actually now I think on it - why precisely does Will need to lose the Ring of Mutated Accuracy? He can wear the Ring of Curse Concentration on his other hand, will cost him Acid damage + Str, but if he's going for a debuff build that's no biggy, Dragging opponents around in melee, even if it's not by as much as by ranged attack, would be disconcerting as hell

Cyrus McEnnis

The flight power is really good, and fits better with Jason's prophecies long term bc the goat mask is in a lot of them. On that theme, I also like the goat mask if it remains with Will long-term as it fits his legend of being a bit of an almost eldritch myth, greater than just a person/climber. So far it feels like the myth has out paced him, but he's ontrack to fullfill it. It'd be a little sad story-wise for him to instead turn away from that myth into a new path just for better stats

Notcreepycreeper

Can he use sourdough to keep a portion of his ghost hand relics? They're not "technically" consumables, but they ARE being consumed, right?

Akkido

That's due to the physical effects of ice dampening fire and slashing damage. This soft set completely negates those downsides.

Akkido

The ring is too damn good to lose on a whim - it fits with every build. Loaning June the soft-set for the moment might be the most sensible way to get it on the table till Will can swap between phantom relics.

Cyrus McEnnis

Keep the frost set around, use it to lure someone into the party

Selkie

Other. I think you are forgetting that now that they are one big party they don't have to have one build. Will and Mason could easily trade off the frost build as needed. That way when Will is gonna go up against a powerful single opponent on his own as an infiltrator he can use the frost build to slow them down and even things out. And the rest of the time Mason can use the frost build to turn into a mass debuff crowd controller rather than a nuker, allowing them a higher chance of capturing enemies for interrogation rather than just killing them, and allowing the team more opportunities to gain practice against large groups of enemies safely by slowing down monster hordes.

PlasmaticPi

Didn't the healer (steve?) Go on about how everyone hate frost builds because it nerfs other types of damage? Why not have him go into more the saboteur/infiltrator route. I mean a high resilience infiltrator would be more interesting story wise than just a damage upgrade

Darren Deloach

His mobility is his biggest advantage and the niche that he fills in the team, along with the entire point of his climber class, so leaning into that would make the most sense.

Infinate Fail

Being able to fly is so much more versatile than anything that's specifically for combat.

Uroš

Utility and entertainment of phantom hand build is 🔥🔥

CMA27

Option 4, Will Sacrifices a Gravity Goat and uses localized Gravity to wall run at people.

Exrotes

Also with the amulet, the cold items would be useful for Mason

Thomas Issa

Flight has saved his life and/or his party's lives at least twice

Paratus

I was thinking it'd work with the Amulet of Frozen Heart as the source of hoarfrost instead, he's already given that to Mason.

rwn

No, the sickle is the key piece that provides the hoarfrost debuff, and it only applies to attacks it makes.

Daedalus

5 things, #1 flight is a game changer #2 worrying about best equipment setup changes when William upgrades Sourdough so that he can refine the relics he consumes #3 he needs the mask for character reasons #4 having the hand store a version of fade cloak is much better than storing his ring in his hand #5 when he can have multiple relics consumed at once having relics with stacking effects like the face cloak empowering the hand is much more important so that those abilities can stack within the powerful hand slot

Thomas Issa

I think his current build is way more interesting than a frost/slow build.

mmarkgraf212

Will being able to drag people in the direction of his choice always does a lot when it comes to crowd control

Dexel

Mobility trumps power in most cases and the frost debuff build relies on being able to hit the enemy. Right now Will has a self sufficient build and does not need to output high damage. If he gets a complete set then maybe, but the frost set seems half baked right now.

Domy

This is the way. I couldn't put it better myself.

Quex

His current build has the advantage of being insanely badass and objectively cool as fuck. Also the frost build is a bit singular, you know?

Apotheosis

In a very real way, it's a continuation of his current build, which is all around flexibility. Being able to do what the team needs. An upgrade where he can swap items builds into that.

Melody Haren Anderson

The frost is insanely powerful, but -- like he's been cautioning Alicia -- it's also completely one-dimensional. Once he fights someone resistant or immune to frost debuffs (which feels inevitable, given the variety of floors and possible enemy abilities), he'll be kinda useless (which is especially bad because it wouldn't surprise me that someone who is immune to frost defuff will use AOE frost debuffs themselves, which is a major weakness of loth). He'll still be able to disrupt spells with his hand and launch stuff, but not nearly as effectively as if he kept the first build. I hate to say it, but I think generalization for him is better than hyper-specialization.

Seth Richter

I believe that more interesting scenarios can be crafted with the current build at the time. Having a super powerful debuff is neat but I feel can get repetitive after a while (A resourceful climber wouldnt want their main combo to get countered and have no viable options except cry). Through the foreknowledge of Jason Salazar, If/When in the future William Oh gets the ability to store multiple items in his hand, then a mobile debuff/striker class can be super powerful.

Jacob

Flight can trivialize a lot of encounters, and his party can't fly. Ignoring the merits of either build, I think you gain more options for storytelling and creativity if he can't fly.

Mousehowl

Can't Will lend the frost stuff to Mason and have him AOE speed debuff when he nukes?

rwn

Frost build is very powerful for what it does but it's really hard to say no to flying.

CommodoreCaptain

Will definitely doesn't need to be a damage-dealer. He's an infiltrator/rogue, and already has Mason and Alicia and Loth to do damage for him. He's better off staying specced into mobility and potential for absolute shenanigans.

Daedalus

Flying is too powerful to lose. It has allowed him to survive 3 or 4 deadly situations so far, and will keep doing so for as long as he has to fight other climbers.

Thomas

Eh, I think Will needs to stay an all-rounder for now. I mean, his whole thing is that he's a Resourceful Climber. So like, shouldn't utility skills synergize with his class best? That said... If he happened to find a relic that spread the lifesteal across his party? Then heck yea! Take the frost build all day long and be the Party's field medic.

Ichikira

I feel like the frost build synergies with consumables and if you could fly and apply frost.. and you can walk on unstable ground you could be eventually waking on ceilings while pelting the enemy with slows abs tossing consumables at them.

Matt

Absolutely option three is what I'd pick if I had magical foresight, does Will have an idea when he might get the next major upgrade to the hand? I'm imagining slowing enemies significantly and then yank them towards you through fire and acid while they are essentially unable to function is a pretty OP setup. While he's with Roger though there is literally no reason for him to give up his current kit, he's safe enough to hold off and level for a minute.

Joshua Gunty

Ability to swap makes it an easy choice to wait. Both are good, no reason to sacrifice long term adaptability for a lateral build sidegrade or small gain

Chris

I chose option 3, and would've picked options 1 if it was only the 2 options. I feel the current build works best for the team right now, with Will acting as a disruptor/battlefield control guy. The frost build would help with that as well, but I feel that forcefully repositioning enemies at the right moments feels more impactful than just slowing someone down (however powerful that is)
