Jane Doe Sketch

Old sketch for cool guy JohnDoe on tumblr, whose tumblr is really super duper NSFW.

So I'm trying to manage my costs a little better, I've been a lot more careful this month about spending on food, and reduced my groceries to roughly 20-25 dollars a week among other things. Cutting down on snack foods is good for a lot of other reasons anyway. I'm cutting off services I don't need, that I liked trying when I had a fair bit more funds. And I'm maybe being a bit more picky about the extra things I buy like watching movies when they come out or giving new comic books a try.

With that said, it's also really apparent to me that I haven't taken care of you guys in a while. I can't blame all that on depression, though it certainly didn't help. But it's totally true that the last three months have seen the first downward slide of pledges, not counting dropping the sketch commission tier. It's mostly my fault, but I also understand if your budgets are getting pretty tight.

It's something I need to be much more conscious of in the future. I actually suspect that, for reasons more than just budgetary, I'll be moving out of my apartment into much cheaper (but a less comfortable situation.) This isn't something I'm worried about yet, my checking account is plenty healthy. But it's really coming to my attention that I need to pay you guys MORE attention.

And I need to do more to grow my audience. You guys have supported me for so long and some of you have been incredibly generous over all that time. I can't expect you guys to shoulder that all by yourselves though, even if I was giving out the content you deserve. I need to get new people to join and add to the pool.

IMHO the raffle doesn't really compare to paid requests in terms of visibility, quality, and growing your audience. The raffle is not a bad idea, but instead of trying to be more democratic, I think you can easily be more ruthless and pick and choose from the commissioners offering the most money and the most interesting commissions. It's a win-win-win as I see it: you get more money, those who can afford it get their works done, and you can still post the results on here for patrons. (Bleh, this was poorly worded, but patreon deleted my comment twice while I was typing and I don't have the patience to make it sound nicer. In any case, no offence meant.)

How are records boring? You don't get that little thrill when you see a beautifully organized and colour coded excel spreadsheet? ^_^

Double Deadline

Thanks dude but seriously it's not a big deal at the moment. I'm just speaking about what's on my mind in the long run.

I'm pretty sure the old idea I had to raffle off quick commissions was popular. I just need to make it more democratic and to keep boring old records. It'd be easier with a clean slate but that's not in the cards for a while.

As an appreciation for the beauty you create I doubled my pledge. Don't get excited; it wasn't that much.

I understand why you took away the commissions tier, but I really think having some form of open commissions makes you a lot more attractive. The main problem with the old one (other than exhausting you with an ever growing backlog) was that it was restricted to the same 12 people all the time and I think you'd reach a lot more people by always prioritising requests from new people. Also, don't do more than you can handle, it's a sure way to get sick of it, it needs to stay in the zone where it's either fun or an acceptable level of "I have to do this because it's my job" (I mean, nobody loves their job all the time but if it's a job it still needs to get done). Also, if you have more than a handful of requests queued up, that's a sign of demand. Which is good! It means you can raise the price and get more money while spending exactly the same amount of time on it. Anyway, that's just my take on things.
