This is taking place in 1938. We had researched this before. There were actually SCUBA clubs in the early and mid-1930s, which featured a tank worn on the back, and a full facemask that replaced goggles. Scuba was further modified with Cousteau's aqualung in the early 1940s. But before he was doing this, SCUBA was actually enjoyed as a pastime mainly where it was first created for sport, in France. ^^

SCUBA term didn't exist until 1952 and it was for a rebreather, the acronym became a generic term for sport diving equipment in the late 50's early 60's. The demand type regulator and tank style "SCUBA" equipment was called an Aqua-Lung rig back in the day invented in 1943 but not sold until 1945 and only in very tiny numbers. Hard hat diving was the thing between the wars and even during the war and is still in use for commercial diving. Thing is, they had the same limitations on depth as SCUBA does today and any depth over 200ft had to have special breathing air mixes and 300ft was the limit for this type of diving in general until the 1970's when decompression chambers and saturation diving became available.
