That has nothing to do with the actors. You're making it sound like the actors are out here doing anything wrong or creepy by portraying the characters that they were hired to portray. Its the story that's the issue not the fact that adults portrayed adults and a child portrayed a child. Let's not lose the plot please.

Either way, yeah. I'd also like to hear his thoughts on this. I'd be very interested to know why he keeps on romanticising the inappropriate/creepy relationships even though it's already been pointed out several times that it's wrong because they're minors.

The fact that they had to *act* attracted to a literal child is still icky, because Sasha herself was a child and they were adults. Just imagine that. Imagine being an adult actor and having to act out being attracted to a minor character who is actually a minor actor IRL. Or imagine being Sasha and having adult actors having to act like they're attracted to you, a minor IRL, playing a minor character. It's icky.

2024-09-28 19:34:05 +0000 UTCThe problem is not that adult actors portray them (the actors aren't the ones attracted to Alison and nobody was out there on set attracted to Sasha Pieterse), the problem is that the CHARACTERS are adults while Alison is a child. Who they're being played by has pretty much nothing to do with it.

2024-09-24 22:23:08 +0000 UTCThis show really boxed themselves in, in my opinion, with sticking to the book material by having the main female characters be in high school rather than college. When we’re reading the books, all you have is the description of them as young girls and can easily remember that these relationships with grown mean are so illegal and inappropriate. However, on screen, all of the girls besides the actress for Allison are played by actresses in their 20s. So, when we see relationships between Ezra and Aria, Spencer and Wren, etc., on screen as opposed to reading about it, it doesn’t look quite as bad we can easily forget that the girls are indeed minors because it’s like “oh yeah they look the same age as the guys so it’s fine”. Then you remember all of the girls are meant to be in high school 🤢 I’m interested to hear your perspective on this

2024-09-24 04:09:23 +0000 UTCAgree with other commenters about Hanna and Sean. And, again, Spencer is a minor while Wren is an adult. I feel bad for Melissa but she's also kind of a bitch so... Toby appeared in the pilot at the funeral but it was a different actor, James Neate. He was replaced by Keegan Allen, who originally auditioned for Wren. He's got a special look but they tried to make him extra creepy in the show. Fun fact: When Spencer is copying Melissa's essay from her computer, you can see a picture of Torrey DeVitto (Melissa) and Jessie Baylin (the blonde), who is a singer and wife of Nathan Followill from Kings of Leon. Btw, have you not started watching The Originals? I can't find it in the archive or on your page anywhere. The only reason I'm asking is because the actor who plays Ben is in it and you don't seem to recognise him. He and Candice Accola (Caroline in TVD) are dating and have been since Dec 2023.

He has a right to choose when and if he has sex. Hanna should respect that. I would say the difference between her and Ben is that she was hurt by the rejection and Ben just wouldn't take no for an answer. But both Ben and Hanna continued to push their partners after being told no, and that's not ok.

But that scene of Ben physically overpowering Emily in the girl’s locker room definitely hits different than Hanna cowering away and feeling sorry for herself. Ben is a grade A douche.

2024-09-24 01:20:26 +0000 UTCThe friend group (‘the liars’) are all 16, and the flashbacks are from when they were 13-15. These men that are pursuing them or whatever are all in their 20s, at least. It’s creepy, and the girls aren’t to blame. I know we are used to adults playing high schoolers in tv shows (especially back then), so sometimes the age gaps and inappropriate relationships are not fully noticed because the actors look similar in age, but for some perspective, Alison’s actress in season 1 is 13 years old.

It's kind of concerning how easily that's forgotten. They're all minors. Allison specifically - her actress (Sasha Pieterse) was 12 when the pilot was filmed, and 13 during s1. So any kind of attraction between her and the male characters is beyond messed up, considering they're all played by adult actors.

If we're upset about Ben pushing Emily to get frisky when she clearly doesn't want to, we need to be upset with Hanna for pushing Sean. Different reasons for Emily and Sean not wanting it, sure, but they're both allowed the choice.
