I mean I think Jack and Locke were the main ones willing to step up as a leader. They also had valuable skills, seemed reliable, and seemed to look out for everyone else. Sawyer and Kate both have had their personal issues known to everyone that likely affected some trust in them being a leader. Sawyer was always looking out for himself and Kate being a criminal that I believe everyone knew about early on.

I was the same way when I first watched the show, Jack and Locke were annoying the crap out of me, especially Jack and I was completely on Sawyer's side. And honestly I kind of trust Sawyer more with the guns then Jack, he was just going to blindly give one to Jin and I understand Jin's anger but that was the thing, Jin was furious and that wouldn't have been good to just give him a weapon, like Locke mentioned another incident could have happened like with Shannon.
