The evolution of NileRed

Hey guys, so the video is finally here and it's kind of a mashup between a thank you and a lab tour.

Let me know what you guys think and please point out any editing errors if you see them! Also, this video is NOT being charged to you guys :)

Also, if you dont already, you should follow me on Twitter... It just occurred to me that I have been updating my status there and not here. I am going to try posting here more, but its just so much easier to make quick statuses on Twitter.

Basically though, i got a sinus surgery on Thursday which has knocked me down pretty bad. As of monday, I was able to get kind of back to normal, but my face still hurts and my nose is completely plugged. So, because of that, I can't really do voice-overs. I wanted to release another video before the end of March, but it just doesnt seem likely.

From this point on though, i will be posting more frequently. The first 3 months of this year have just been super crazy though, with the whole building a lab, getting a major operation, etc.

Its a weird grey zone. If i want to be a certified lab, then yes, permits and everything are probably necessary. However, if i just call it a studio/workshop for filming "art projects", then I dont need much of anything.

Nile Red

That's just because you're not familiar with those things. It wouldn't be that bad. If you're in an industrial/commercial building, the zoning is done. The fire marshal will care about housekeeping and your storage cabinets. OSHA wants you to use best practices with your fume hood and to have an eye wash. The EPA (actually, your local/state air board) won't care unless you're venting hundreds of pounds of solvents or emitting puffy clouds of smoke. It's just like any other business; if you can't be bothered to understand your responsibilities, you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Isaac Roll

Yeah, that is a good idea. I need to start putting more work and effort in the whole Patreon side of things. I feel like Im just handling too much right now though :/

Nile Red

I am thinking of some other system I could setup to make them watchable. Maybe Vimeo?

Nile Red

Ha, no worries. I actually figured that the name was used for something like that. The only reason I didn't include the whole thing, is because it was quite long lol

Nile Red

I just want to say I'm sorry that this stupid-ass nickname (kinda) ended up in your credits, Nile 😂 See, I'm also supporting hbomberguy who'll have to read it out aloud. So it is very, very important for a while longer. p.s. So happy for your success and wishing you a speedy recovery!

SadeN.moe

Thanks! ^^

Gabriel J.

Its a weird little gray area. Im still working on making sure its all legal.

Nile Red

Ill make a little paper note on my desk to make sure you're there next time :)

Nile Red

Yey Nile! So, as I told you on youtube, it looks like you forgot to include me in the credits. No big deal, really. But you asked me to message you on Patreon so you could fix it, so here's my message. ^^

Gabriel J.

This video made me so incredibly happy for you! It's been a long journey from when you started to this point, and I've loved every single video since you started. I'm a little curious about the legal issues of having a lab where you are located, have you been in contact with any law enforcement to get any permit or anything? Just would suck if they decided to shut down your lab for no reason.

not too relevant to this video, but I think you should definitely have higher pledge levels than $5, like $10, $20, and $50. If you have so many donations at the $5 level, I'm sure some of those people would be happy to donate at a higher level. I know because I'm one of them.

I got it from someone in the comments, decided I could reach you better here. It looks like the address is the one where you filmed the silicon tetrachloride video outside

hey7328

and you are 100% correct lol. It isnt my home address, but still i should have that public. ugh, i will have to fix that. I wish someone commented before I made the video public!

Nile Red

You showed your address at 13:44, Nigel

hey7328

Were any permits required? I would have never even thought to attempt this in the US due to zoning/permits/insurance/EPA/OSHA etc.

Andy Aspaas

Just an idea of what I would do - replace the lab’s light switch with an Insteon smart switch and use a plug in module for the pump. Whenever the room lights are on, the pump is on.

Andy Aspaas

Great video! Labspace is awesome. Looking forward to your patreon stretch goal where you get a chimney on the roof and an air quality permit 😂 Any chance you can put your old videos on a NileRed2 channel? Or do they just get banned?

Isaac Roll

ngl, the humor in this video made me become a patron. i always loved you and your work and have been meaning to pledge for a while, but this video made me become one

Mark

So... when are you selling tour tickets?

I see the wire comes in through the cabinet door, why not pull a wire back out through the same gap, and go up the wall, and mount it on that side of the wall? You could get some sturdy tube, or sturdy wire, it wouldn't be the prettiest solution, but at least it would be safe. EDIT: You could also mount the big mushroom variety at floor height and just kick it to turn on. Knowing IKEA it should be able to fit on the trim under the cabinet door. Correctly label (kick to turn on emergency water) it above though so any guests can find it too.

Hmm, I must share Info if you want to get a Centrifuge. Make sure you do lots of resarch on the reviews it gets and it is compatable with what you want to use it for. Normal bench 4000 RPM (500 to 4000) and 0 to 60 minute LAB centrifuges for example are NOT compatable with Blood or Medical uses! I found some tubes that are 110 mm in length but the holder is 105 mm. 5 mm extra for that in my opinon should not be an issue unless it is used for a long period of time. Some companies will not tell you on the site about the tubes used so you may have to look elsewhere. That a real pain in the ass.

Daniel Blake Shoemaker

I wanted that, but the issue with it is that it needs to be wired somehow, which is a huge pain now that the sink is built and everything

Nile Red

You should definitely get a Emergency Mushroom Push Button (normally open) to turn on the pump when pressed. You will forget one day to turn it on in the morning, and with acid in your eyes finding the sink will be hard, let alone that tiny remote. EDIT: A normal emergency button would turn something off, look for one that turns something on or can do both (NO/NC). They cost only a few bucks on ebay or at your local retailer, but would increase safety of that arrangement a lot.

Congratulations, Can't wait to see what you can do with a setup like that.

Matthew Turner

I'm curious how much you paid for the explosion-proof fridge. I've heard they're expensive, and I've shopped for explosion-proof exhaust fans only to discover that they are massively more expensive than I'd expected. I ended up going for a belt-driven operation (this was for a small painting booth). Depending on what those IKEA countertops are made from, you might want to investigate covering it with bar-top style epoxy coating. That stuff is fairly bullet-proof chemically speaking. Application is fairly straightforward.

Paul Grodt

Congrats, man! I wish you the best, and I've consistently been glad to help support your work!

Paul Grodt

What an inspiring story. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Nice job! Take your time recovering and getting everything ready. I'm sure there are even better things to come.

Thank you for showing us this!

Emil Almberg

I worked in wet labs almost my entire career and I must say that I am impressed. You have about anything I've seen in industry. Should make for much easier video production. I hope your lease is stable...

Will Latinette

Well Done! You've worked so hard to reach this point. I'm really glad things are working out. I'm excited for you too, and to see how things develop in the future.

Well, Sorry to hear about the Sinus Surgry. If you don't mind what was the cause? All those long preps in labs on youtube. I hope you get a full recovery tho.

Daniel Blake Shoemaker

You've done an amazing job! Get well, and I am really looking forward to seeing what you do next!

Michael Aichlmayr

Awesome lab, congratulations! Nice to hear your pops helped you too, say thanks to your old man for us! :)

I hope the surgery was a success and you are back to 100% soon. Guest voice-overs while recovering perhaps? Nile Red video karaoke by patreons?

Well, ive actually never worked with it. I just have some

Nile Red

I actually bought some dry erase pens to use on the white boards

Nile Red

I really appreciate that :). Good luck with your applications!

Nile Red

I'm an undergrad chem student applying to Ph.D. programs this fall and I just want to say that I love watching your videos! They're interesting, informative and honestly inspiring to see what can be done in my field. I'm proud to be a supporter and happy you've got a good workspace now! Keep it up!

I also really like your lab. Maybe a white board with filt pens, and a green/blue screen would be handy? :)

Alf-Marius Dahl Bysveen

Awesome to see Nile! This is really exciting!

taytay

Oh you work with Cyanide? You should do an experiment with that LOL. :)
