Or nothing Vax was led to believe from the many times she ,,stalked" him since (and even before) the tomb... And now he (and us) have some clarity on his destiny ahead.

I'm gonna have to rewatch, but wasn't Vax the one using the Immovable Rod? From what I recall it was Vax/Liam's plan to get inside the dragon, but he needed Sam/Scanlan for the Dimension Door spell... I could be wrong though...

Fun fact: In the campaign, during the Kaylie and Scanlan confrontation, Kaylie went to stab Scanlan with her sword. Matt Mercer rolled for an attack, and he rolled a natural 1 for her! So he made it this emotionally devastating moment between the two instead. It was absolutely fascinating to see the way he played that out instead of Kaylie actually attacking Scanlan.
Anyway, I enjoyed the reaction as always and I'm looking forward to the next one! I'm so glad you've become such a fan of this show ❤️

So you questioned Vex's "sensibilities to dragons", and maybe someone answered that already, but basically, it's a Ranger ability; they can know when a creature of a certain type of their choosing is around (in Vex's case, dragons), which is being played as this whistle thingy in the show.

See that's the thing, it works as a bit, and it works when you do the whole name, but just his first name on its own and not shortened feels downright uncanny to me.

I mean, that's kinda what happened in the game as well! It was different in a few ways (for starters, it was Liam/Vax's idea, not Sam/Scanlan's, and Scanlan had a mid-range teleport spell and that's how they got into the dragon. But since the show-Scanlan doesn't have that spell, probably as a nerf for the show, well, up the ass it is!!! :p

I know, I wanted to include their trip to the Fey realm, but I thought it would just get confusing so I did not do it.

> Exandria without knowing his porpuse (It has been around a week since the tomb), and well...
Technically, it's been longer than that because of their visit to the fey realm but the time moving differently there is just going to be confusing.
> a - Look at the intro
That is an important detail. The intro has those golden threads for a reason and the Matron's words help to highlight it

Wow indeed. The humour in this show can be too much, even for Elijah. The fact that Scanlan thought of something that Ant Man did not even joke about doing. That is both clever and disgusting. 🤣💜

I cannot stress how weird it is hearing someone refer to Matt Mercer as "Matthew." Like, it's technically correct, but also it just sounds wrong.

This is how I took the interaction between Vax and the Matron... from the MANY times I rewatched that scene/ episode (it has been at least 20-30 times) and watched reaction to it. I try to keep it short - I can't promise anything:
- So firstly the main reason the Matron was so ,,creepy" was she did not want her champion to wander in Exandria without knowing his porpuse (It has been around a week since the tomb), and well...
- There is a thing in place called the Divine Gate: in short after the Calamity (the war between the gods 1000 years ago) the gods put this in place so that they cannot intervine in the mortal realm DIRECTLY... so that leaves visions and their followers communing with them directly (Pike in Season 1 and Vax here)
Next I wanna break down the conversation between Vax and the Matron. (Just the "important" parts because if I do the whole thing this will be long - and its already not short)
- One of my favorite things about it is that first and formost the Matron lays down all - or at least most - of the cards on the table, because (presumibly) she knows Vax has his doubts about all this.
- "What choice do I have?" - Notice how the Matron does not answer this question, because it is NOT about it being a choice or not, to be fair I think she would have made him her champion either way (the tomb, and his plead to her was just a convinience to her). It is about Vax being on board with his responsibilities... without her forcing it on him... she could (?) but she does not want to.
- "You are Fate-Touched, able to see and bend the threads around you" - That is Vax's in-game Lucky feat's in-universe explonation... also Fate-Touched is a very rare thing (good paralell would be Silver Eyes in RWBY) and the Matron being the Goddess of Fate had an interest in him for a while...
- "I've been watching you longer than you know": So the initial implication being in Episode 1 this season during the attack on Emon, but it could be a - Look at the intro and b - I have this theory that during Season 1, when Kiki was shot by Delilah (and Vax saved her afterwards), he was in fact (unknowingly) very slightly bending her thread, just enough that she did not die... i don't think it will ever be confirmed, but it is a plausable theory.
And one more thing: The Matron wants Vax to respect her and their duty, not just because of the typical God/Follower relation, but (most importantly) if he respects her, she will/ is respects him... it is a mutual partnership... even IF he were to cross a line, which he really shouldn't do. Edit: Also I love the fact that when Vax was in the pool he instictivly clung to life (i e. Covered his mouth when he felt he was about to drown) before realizing he could not get up to the surfuce, because in all honesty he is safest at death's door... As he realized during/after the commune.

I really good paralell for Vax is Mel from Arcane (the fact that her VA voices Devana is just iceing on the cake) - Spoilers for Arcane Season 2: Both of them did not have any relation with magic and then a bigger entity (Tho for Mel it was for selfish reasons for Vax it was not in part of said entity) ,,claimed" them (The Matron for Vax and LaBlenc for Mel) whose associated color is gold (Threads of Fate and her magic), after a while they managed to understand their powers and make it their own.

Scanlan could only say "i think" because he had no idea who she was or that he had a daughter. He's hoping he would have figured it out before going that far but it's kinda impossible. Super weird situation to be in. Her plan of "I'm going seduce my father to murder him" is certainly crazy enough to be a vox machina plan.

1. To be fair, Leia COULD have been a real person Scanlan had an intimate relationship with...she just wasn't Kaylie's mom. <.<
2. That magical sword Scanlan took from Kaylie wasn't in the campaign. It replaced a D&D item known as the "Immovable Rod", a cylinder with a button on the end that when pushed locks it in place no matter where it is and can't be moved unless the button is pushed again. One of the many things they needed to change for copyright reasons. lol
3. Vex and Keyleth's relationship is so fun to watch evolve both in the campaign and in this series. So much so there is a dedicated fanbase that ship the two together! #Vexleth 💙💚
4. Unfortunately, they did NOT go up Umbrasyl's ass in the campaign, instead teleporting inside him using dimension door. Afterwards Scanlan used the forementioned Immovable Rod to hold him in place, much like the magic sword in this series.

Every time I revisit this episode, I just have to stop and appreciate the sequence between the Matron and Vax - it's just so beautiful and poetic. Everything that happens throughout this season builds up this idea of the Matron as this cold entity of darkness (even the colour grading of her temple being black and red). But then you enter her realm...and it's blues and golds. She's soft and firm, almost motherly in how she speaks to Vax. She's nothing like we're led to believe
Just...the deity sequences in this show in general are gorgeous

Vex's dragon sense is just a method of translating a ranger's dnd abilities into a show. In the 2014 version of dnd rangers got to pick any favored enemy and they gained abilities for fighting that enemy. It was a very niche ability and the 2024 version changed it. One of those abilities is rangers can sense if their foes are within a mile and which direction. It's something you train and not something like a born connection.

Before I got into this series, I actually picked The Raven Queen (Matron of Ravens) as my deity in a one-shot for this exact reason. DM wanted us to play spooky characters (Halloween), party didn't have a Cleric, so I made a Death's Domain Cleric. Me being me, I had to make him unique. I didn't want to play some dour necromancer, so i flipped the script and gave him some midwest charm. William Door III is a very jovial fellow who wields the powers of death and acts as a shepherd to the recently departed. He and his rather large family put those grieving at ease. Funerals become celebrations when they're around. That and it was a fun excuse to cast Inflict Wounds while saying "Ope! Just gonna sneak on past ya there!"

the stuff with Scanlan and daughter will come soon but when you get a chance though I would recommend watching the original campaign... let's just say that it's very different then what happened in the show, also after the next episode please look up the Like a Prayer vid with Vax, it is so good and encapsulates his journey so well
