RWBY - Vol. 4 Ep. 4 + 5 - Reaction (Full)

Comments

Yeah, Tai and Yang are just like that with each other, you see where she gets it from. I honestly still trying to wrap my head around that Tai got with both Raven and Summer. Raven is a piece of work to put it politely, as you learn more as the series progresses. Something to clarify it was Raven's tribe that attacked the village that Ruby's group came upon, their attack and attraction of the Grimm destroyed the village.

Alexis Cardillo

Is it Friday yet? I need another reaction. Lol.

Tigerhawk

Except we've never seen yang and Tai interact before all of this, he's been patient with her but theirs only so long it can be waited for when dark/negative emotions can literally bring bloodthirsty monsters to your door, yes it would have been nice if Yang had all the time she needed to sort herself out but it's simply not safe long term. In one moment they both had Tai aid Yang in getting out of the dangerous funk she was in as well as shown what kind of relationship these two usually have.

Phoenix Mackenzie

I'm pretty sure Ghira is the same height or just a bit shorter than Hazel who is canonically 8 feet b tall.

Jonathan Morgan

Here's The Thing about Yang...she puts other's well-being over herself... Taiyang told Ooblek and Port that he hasn't gone to search for Ruby because he needs to look after Yang. And she heard it. What does Yamg do? She puts the arm on whether she's ready or not, because Ruby is out there. I love that Adorable Ray of Sunshine but YANG! Girl!! Take care of yourself jsjdhdhd

Pdrs

Yeah, faunus get a single physical animal trait. Though how it manifests is a bit erratic. Most of the time it will be ears, horns or tail, but not always and not all animals have 'notable' traits in those categories. Ghira's trait is claws on his finger tips. (like Tukson had from Vol2 Episode 1) You saw background characters with facial markings as scales and such, though for them it's not just markings on their face. There are also fish, insect, arachnoid and reptile faunus. There was/is a World of Remnant mini-video that covers faunus more that came out just before this episode. The last of the WoR videos came out before volume 4 episode 10, so you could binge watch them by then to cover 'in world' lore that all characters 'know' so it's not something that'll be explained in the show. They're all under 5 minutes a piece besides two that are a bit over 7. That said, there is apparently some issues with posting reactions to them (And the RWBY Chibi side series) on YouTube so you might want to either keep them Patreon exclusive and/or watch them on your own time off camera.

Raven is such an interesting character probably my favorite character who isn’t part of the main two teams

Rachel Mae

Raven is one of my favorite characters

Jittercritter

Ah, I see. I always looked it as the show is divided into 3 Volume ,,mini-arcs". Volume 1-3: The Beacon Arc. Volume 4-6: The Mistral Arc/ After the Fall of Beacon Arc. Volume 7-9 (not exactly, but close enough): The Atlas Arc. Volume 10 and (possibly) beyond that could be The Vacuo Arc. Since the shows ,,mythology" involves the number 4, it would be logical to assume that there be "4" 3 Volume Arcs.

LikeCat

Stories are dividing into a usual 3-Act structure. Like the Beacon Arc is basically Act 1, the setup whereas the Fall of Beacon or even Yang’s incident with Mercury played the part of “Inciting Incident.” Usually the Inciting incident transitions the plot into Act 2 which is where Team RWBY and gang are currently in. Act 2 is where the development occurs. Act 3 is most likely the Vacuo arc, which is basically the home stretch, if it ends with that arc. Usually some Act 3 elements are finally learning all the Chekhov’s Gun plots coming into fruition. Also known as the “set up and payoff.” Since RWBY is one big slow burn, Act 3 is the last part of the narrative where all the answers are revealed and all the hidden characters and allies come out of the shadows.

Mare

It’s not that she didn’t have development, it’s the fact that it was intentionally slow. It had to be because since she’s the face of the franchise, her development can’t be one and done. Her development along with the rest of her teammates will continue to get development even in Act 3. Since their storylines are deeply embedded with each other and other parts of the plot, it allows them to evolve. But Ruby’s development was gradual. For being the frontman of the team it makes sense since the main protagonist. Since the is is long form storytelling they had to get the rest of the teams core development and angst in the early stages of Act 2. Ruby’s angst is a brewing kind.

Mare

Team STRQ is one of the biggest ,,holes" in the RWBY story... Even today, the main factor to why it is (In my opinion at least), is this: for most things story related we as the viewers can somewhat quess how it will go down... Not for this one tho (We find out big things even today, V9 stuff that happened - Who could have guessed that? We were theorizing that it could be a possibility, but I don't think anybody thouth its gonna be REAL). Also what do you mean Arc 3?

LikeCat

Yeah, I feel like they should have established that Yang and Tai had this kind of relationship before that scene. That feels more like something Qrow would say to her, rather than her father.

RibKoboldScout

Brute forcing some math based on the shot in the opening where blake is hugging her parents, im estimating her dad is about 7'4 give or take an inch or two. that man is taller than Shaq

phoenix feycreature

Oh I'm aware. It's just a fun detail that everybody finds themselves in some sort of "princess" position and only Weiss gets ribbed for it. Blake is clearly reluctant to even talk about her status as she awkwardly points to her house rather than going "Here's my big mansion!" and way back in V1 with her exposition speech she never mentions that her father was the leader of the White Fang.

Kiesen

without giving away too much, humor is a coping mechanism for Yang. also her name does literally translate to "sunny little dragon" so that wasn't just a cute thing her dad calls her. Raven is so much fun. can't blame you for feeling very sus about her right now; she is... a complicated woman >.> I knew you'd love meeting the Belladonna parents. Kali and Ghira are truly a delight, and I know you'll love the interactions with Blake that are to come.

Cinder's Apologist

I gotta admit, Team STRQ is basically Chekhov's gun even at this point of the story LOL. Actually most of the plot lines are a Chekhov's Gun. So if something is brought up in the earlier volumes, you can guarantee it will be brought up again as something extremely important later on. The thing about this series is, like I mentioned in a previous post, that Monty +CRWBY plant seeds. We as viewers don't have the FULL picture of anything. We are fed the minimum to formulate our own speculations until the reveals. And even then, with long-form storytelling such as this series, development isn't a one and done deal. Things evolve, characters evolve. Which is what makes RWBY's narrative even more interesting. RWBY plays a lot with either inversions or subversions, or just flat out breaking of common tropes. People may think it's going one way but there always that twist which I really love!

Mare

i hope you don't mean Ruby. because i don't agree at all with the apparent agreement that "Ruby had no development until V9" when this girl literally grew up from a girl who was just the excitable geeky weapon girl who loves her family, to V4 where she grew into a real team leader with real stakes, and without spoiling, developing even more into a more mature but still silly girl.

Gavin Bickel

Oh I totally agree. We've only gotten tiny bread crumbs of info on Raven so I have this speculation that she's like her daughter in a "more-than-meets-the-eye" kind of person. Somehow there's a few missing pieces of Team STRQ that we still don't know yet which might possibly be revealed in Act 3.

Mare

V9 was awesome and very much needed for one particular team member that was the last to receive development which was intentional. And it had important lore that is useful for the last arc. If I divulge anymore, I'd be spoiling so I guess I'll leave it at that.

Mare

Hay I just saw the trailer for Devil May Cry anime show that will be on Netflix on June 3 and it looks AWESOME check it out.

RavenFairy

I’m so happy you’ve finally met Kali & Ghira Belladonna. 🥰❤️ They are an absolute treasure, and undoubtably the best parents in the series. 🖤💜

RenaissanceM

Ruby and yang family tree for future reference ( in case she checks these comments) Taiyang xialong : Ruby and Yang's biological father Raven Branwen : Yang's bio mom Summer Rose: Ruby's bio mom and Yang's adoptive mother Qrow Branwen: Raven's twin brother and the girls' Uncle

Octavia

Tai and Yang both definitely have THAT kind of sense of humor. 😅 At the same time though I think Tai said what he said for a more specific reason. To show Yang that she can still take a punch. Both literally and figuratively. That even though she lost, that doesn’t make her a loser. It doesn’t mean she’s weak. She’s every bit as strong as she was before what happened. Tai understands better than most that the world they live in can take everything that is precious from you. As Rocky once said life will knock you down and keep you down if you let it. But Yang needs to know that it’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep going. 💛🌻

RenaissanceM

I... *braces self* ... really like Raven alot. I really really like this season and am excited for you to experience the story unfolding in this arc.

Jasmine King

Tbh I thought 9 was a waste of time and just filler, except that one scene... you know which one I mean

Arius

This is a key nuance that a lot of people miss, but Blake never grew up as the daughter of the Chieftan of Menagerie. She grew up as the daughter of the High Leader of the White Fang, and was at the front lines of numerous protests. Ghira only became Chieftan after stepping down as High Leader. Per Corsac: "The White Fang's tactics are admittedly, more aggressive since you stepped down as High Leader and became Chieftain of Menagerie." When Ghira left, Blake stayed with the Fang. As a result, this might honestly be her first time spending a long time in the massive Belladonna house. Also, why ARE Tai's cabinets up so high?!

man-of-bvz1n3ss

It comes off as really weird to people who don't have that kind of relationship with her parents.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I'm so happy we got two episodes today!!!! Official Introduction of Raven, mother of Yang, as you can tell she is definitely Mom of the Year material. Blake didn't splinter off with Adam, she just left the White Fang in general, Adam was the one influencing his sector to become a Splinter group. Blake's parents!!! Two great and supportive parents that are adorable and awesome. Can't wait till you get to the later Volumes, especially Volume 9!!!

Ko Villa

Now you know who the little farm boy is, Oscar must be protected at all costs! As far as the comment from Tai about Yang. He was right when he said that she still had a lot to learn. Yang is only about 18 at this point and even though she has experienced a terrible tragedy. She does still have a lot that she needs to learn about the world. I really liked the design of Menagerie, and seeing all the different kinds of faunas's there are. I really like Blake's dad as well, and Qrow calling Raven out as a bad mom was pretty satisfying. Raven is definitely a complex character to say the least. Also the rest of us look forward to watching your rwby days just as much as you, if not more! So happy that you enjoy RWBY so much! Can't wait for the next episode! ❤️🤍🖤💛

Bryan Forquer

Ah yes, time for the complicated feelings about Raven. She definitely does break expectations of how she should act as Yang's mother, and certainly explains why she hasn't been around. And yeah, Tai's dynamic with Yang certainly does explain a lot of Yang's personality. He's very frank & tactless, but then, so is Yang. It's the sort of dynamic that most would read as insanely rude, but for them, it's just their playful banter. I dare say he almost treats Yang how he would if she were her son. Which I kinda like, honestly. Breaks assumptions of how daddy-daughter dynamics usually go. I definitely recommend watching pairing the next 2 episodes together, especially cause they kinda go hand-in-hand. Also pairing up episodes really does help a ton with making sure you don't lose track of the lore when watching on a weekly basis.

{L} Frances

It’s funny to see that most of team RWBY have terrible parents but the one person who was a criminal have such supportive parents. (Blake). Also for the menagerie lore it was I think people vs animals and something happened where the two species combined, there’s more details in it on RWBY Fairytale book which is canon to the series.

Adionus

I more or less agree on your feelings about Tai, but maybe oddly it's part of why I like this volume - like, we get so much character depth and development in Yang in reaction to and despite it since his handling of the role of parent affected her just as much as Raven's handling/abandonment.

pneuma163

I kinda fall for Raven the same way you get overwhelmed when Cinder is on screen. Her actions might make her feel like a really one-dimentional character... She is anything BUT one-dimentional, and I will die on this hill. She is a... Complex character (especially nowdays), to put it lightly.

LikeCat

So many great reactions and such to everything in here, and they pack some really complex interpersonal dynamics into these two chapters, but I have to admit that I have been looking forward to your reaction to "I really don't like you." :D I think it's so important and helpful to recognize just how many family dynamics and history are involved in the interactions in these chapters between Yang and Tai, Qrow and Raven, and Blake and her parents. There's a lot more to learn about all that, but it all plays into why I like them all so much as interesting characters for the story - they're all doing their best, but they are very much all full of problems and often stuck in ruts of behavior patterns. Anyway, shout out to Ruby who has been traveling for a long time with Nora, Jaune, and Ren, but still has to turn around and count how many are in her party when they're checking in at the inn. It's probably partly since they so rarely (if ever) have stayed at an inn, but it's also such a Ruby moment.

pneuma163

What's funny to me is that Velvet is they only faunus we've seen who speaks with an Australian accent, and she's not even from Menagerie! :-P

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Splitting these up into two because these episodes hit two different notes lmao: - Tbh once you finish with the series you should review all the openings to appreciate the foreshadowing and how they link together (and make reference to dialogue and other songs) - Why are Tai's cabinets up so high - Yang laughs it off but yikes Tai that was a very callous jab. Yang already hides a lot of her emotions behind humor so she really didn't need that. - "My sunny little dragon" <--- that's what Yang Xiao Long actually means btw - Raven is a bitch (I understand why) but she's still a MILF ----- - Menagerie is kind of like Remnant's Australia environment wise. Also hell of a name for a place with a high population of animal people. Did they choose that or did the humans did?? - Blake canonically being a princess and the show never discussing it. Actually, everyone is a bit of nepo baby?? Weiss is the granddaughter of the Schnee Dust Company's founder, Yang is the daughter of a chieftain of a bandit tribe, and Ruby has her silver eyes. - I'll say this every time until I don't have to but: THERE IS NO S IN "Team RWBY". - Corsac and Fennec were actually supposed to be in V1 but were scrapped and reused here. - Ghira is based off Bagheera from The Jungle Book. So he's a panther. - As a tall AFAB bitch with an average-sized mother and a tall father, I'm forever bitter Blake is only 5'6. I know why but even the fandom kind of glosses over this with headcanons.

Kiesen

Fun fact: As people have already said Menagerie is inspired by Australia, but the whole thing about the kingdoms shipping off the majority of the Faunus population there is inspired by how Australia was originally used by the British Empire to dump convicts at penal colonies on the continent, which is how Australia first got colonized

Peter Mihailos

i fully agree with your comments abt tai, like given his history with raven and summer, like how is that fair at all for him to say that she's "moping" ??

Ray Knight

When Raven was first revealed in Vol 2, I thought she was so cool, but I just didn’t like the direction they went with her character.

Thunter

Blake caught feelings first when it comes to Sun. Go rewatch when he first ran by her in volume 1. Put the subtitles on incase you miss it.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I LOVE this ,,dysfuncional" family so much. Especially the twins.

LikeCat

elijah's reaction to tai's "lost braincells along with that arm" comment is SO ME. like UGH i hated that moment when i first saw it and i still hate it now, even though the writing is like "haha hey look yang is okay with it bc that's their humor" it's still like NO???? it just was such an odd writing choice for me personally and it's just UGH.

Ray Knight

You Can learn all about the Faunus in one of the World of Remnant videos. They are kinda important. It's actually funny that yhe show had to give us lessons on understanding this world our characters live in

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Raven is like....a bad mother

Globe Blotter

Raven is an evil murderous bitch. She lead her gang and murdered all of those people we saw in the village in chapter 2.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Welcome to Menagerie. Two-thirds desert and filled with dangerous wildlife, it's basically Australia with Polynesian/Melanesian place names and architecture.

ArcticBanana

For real. It's basically like, they got Yang, Ruby, Taiyang, Summer, Qrow and Raven and decided...let's make them all related in the most convoluted way possible.

Flufux

something that I think a lot of people don't get with Tai's 'joke' is that he has been patient with Yang for a long time, the implication is that it's been months at least, probably a week or so after they got Yang's robot arm. But yang hasn't made any progress. Unlike our world, it is literally dangerous to be depressed in Remanent. Dark feelings literally bring bloodthirsty monsters to your door. It's not fair that yang didnt' have the chance or time to recover on her own, but after months of wallowing and being unable to protect herself, I get why Tai showed her some tough love to help knock her out of her funk

bloodyshadow1

Yeah, the intro and credits together are around 2 minutes. So, when you see the runtime of an episode, that is about how much time is devoted to that.

James Long

you should react to the timebomb music video!

Amanda

It's only surface level "close-knit"

Mare

That feature is actually just part of his boot design according to the concept art. His Faunus trait hasn't shown up yet until the next Volume. And CRWBY stuck to the One-Animal-Trait rule.

Mare

Huh, that's interesting. I never knew the full version of that story. Thanks!

man-of-bvz1n3ss

It's crazy to me how not one person understands that interaction with Tai and Yang and how close knit the family is

Disrespktd

Bah dum cshhhh 🥁

Rachel Mae

And she is dodges them like a champ she is. Good job Elijah.

LikeCat

Yep, Yang’s family tree is a little bit…. Complicated to say the least. 🤣❤️🌹

Liam Gradwell

Episode 4: Ah, and here we finally officially meet Raven for the first time. Worst Mom, how you doing? For now, yes, she is Yang's birth mother, the one that abandoned her after she was born. Summer is Ruby's mom and Yang's step mom (Super Mom, Yang called her, because you know...she was the mom that stepped up for little baby Yang) that went on a mission and never came back and is presumed dead. Raven is apparently the leader of the bandits that took out that village back in episode 2. So, just a lovely person all around. For now, though, we finally get Salem’s name officially dropped in show instead of just in the credits, and another mention of a ‘relic’ of some sort that Salem is apparently searching for. Intriguing. I get what they were going for with Tai, but it’s always rubbed me the wrong way. The way he describes what Yang’s going through as “moping” like she didn’t just go through the gigantic traumatic event that affected not only her but the whole world. And he’s one to talk, considering he shut down after they lost Summer and left a six-year-old alone with her toddler sister enough that she could leave the house to almost get eaten by Grimm. And then at the end, the only reason she puts on the arm is because she thinks she's being a burden to her dad and stopping him from looking for her sister (and I'll give Tai this, this isn't what he meant by his comment and he probably didn't think Yang would hear). Idk. Tai has always been one of those characters that bothers me. And it’s just another personal grievance I have with this volume, again it’s fine if others don’t see it that way. Episode 5: Man, that scene where Kali just hugs her daughter gets me emotional every time. Especially because that was not what Blake was expecting. Breaks my heart man. I love Blake’s parents though. Such sweethearts. And her dad being called Ghira.... like Bagheera from The Jungle Book. That just tickles me for some reason. So I guess that makes him a panther Faunus? So if you'll recall at the end of V1 Blake talked about how she was basically raised in the White Fang, and then five years ago their leader stepped down and a new one took over. Makes sense seeing as her dad was the previous leader that she'd be raised around all the rallies and stuff. So five years ago after Ghira stepped down (and Blake would have been 12), she left with the new, more violent White Fang and Adam. Adam and his faction are still WF, they're just a "splinter cell." Or so Corsec and Fennec say. But yeah, Blake hasn't seen her parents in at least five years. And hey, now her dad is Chieftan of Menagerie.

BGTitan

Tai and Yang have a...unique repport to say the least! Lol Also, i have a small panic attack everytime she googles something RWBY related. There is a mine field of spoilers out there

Rando

Damn, I didn’t even make that connection. She sure is a “Rabenmutter”. Etymologically the term seems to originate from the fact that young ravens leave their nest before they can fly.

Bernhard

Small correction, it wasn't a pilot movie. Volume 1 was initially conceptualized as 8 30-minute episodes that would've covered up through the initiation of the teams. Corsec and Fennec would've been sent by Roman to basically release high-level Grimm into the Emerald Forest. Then RT higher-ups wanted more RWBY and greenlit just enough budget for a slightly longer Volume 1, so CRWBY scaled back their original ideas to get a bit more stories into Volume 1 like Blakes finale with the Fang, Ruby and Weiss' getting along, etc.

Nektis Noir

Not sure if you caught it when the brothers mentioned it but Ghira (Blakes dad) was the first leader of the White Fang when it was peaceful. He stepped down when things in the organization got too heavy and became chieftain of Menagerie instead with Sienna Khan (character who's been named so far but you haven't yet met) stepping up to take over the WF under a new "violence where necessary" rule. Then Adam took the WF that were in Vale and kinda skewed them to be his more radical terrorist way of thinking. But as you can see with the Albain brothers, his influence is sadly reaching beyond just Vale too 🫠

Nektis Noir

Also also, those two creepy fox faunus, Corsec and Fennec, were designed very early on in the development process of the show. Back before Volume 1 got greenlit, Monty, Miles & Kerry put together a treatment for a pilot movie, which would have had Corsec and Fennec actively involved with Roman Torchwick in an attack on Beacon Academy

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Also, now that you have met Blake's dad, and have heard the current White Fang leader's name a couple times (Salem mentioned her too back in chapter 1) I can point out one of my favorite literary references in the show: Ghira Belladonna is based on Bagheera, the black panther from Kipling's The Jungle Book, who protects the "man cub" Mowgli and helps him along in his adventures. Which means that the White Fang turned from a political protest group into a terrorist organization when the tolerant Bagheera stepped down in favor of the human-hating tiger Shere Khan

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

En-Tai-re Team!

Symbolic Remnant

Fun fact: in some Germanic countries, a woman who neglects or abandons her children is termed a "raven mother"...

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

It's also an interesting barometer for the audience: when i first saw the episode, I was much more offended that Tai would refer to Yang's depression as "moping"

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Oscar!!! My son!!! “The Branwen twins have always been… interesting to say the least” “that sure didn’t seem to stop young Tai” 😏😏 Tai hooked up with every single one of his team mates you cannot convince me otherwise lmao Speaking of the Branwen twins we finally get to know Raven a little bit. She’s such an interesting character and one of my favorites. Pretty much all I can say about her right now. But yea if it wasn’t clear the bandits that attacked the village from a few episodes ago were her people A tiny animation detail I’ve always loved in the ep is when Ruby is speaking to the innkeeper she looks around to count how many people they have. It’s so human. we’ve all done the same thing at some point or another even tho we know full well and good how many people are in our party and don’t need to count Kali and Ghira are the best fr. And now that we know that not only is Blake’s dad the chieftain of Menagerie but also the former leader of the White Fang that she told Sun about in v1 I can finally say one of my favorite fndm memes about team rwby: Ruby: legendary Silver Eyed Warrior Weiss: heiress to the Schnee Dust Company Blake: Princess of the Faunus Yang: Yang! :D (And we love her for it. Shes the heart of the team)

Rachel Mae

I assumed the trash talking between Tai and Yang is a result of the fact that they are both fist fighters and would have trained together a lot, and probably talked a lot of smack (lovingly)

Cheery in Pink!

Yeah Blakes Dad Ghira is Chieftain of Menagerie. Essentially making Blake a princess in the process.

BrightHeart

As for Ghira, look at his toes if you rewatch.

Donovan "Ravenhull"

As for Faunus features, the original guideline was one feature, wanting to avoid going full anime animal people. As time went on, they said they loosed that guideline.

Donovan "Ravenhull"

Yeah... Dark Humor seems from this scene to be uncommonly normalized and enjoyed in the Xiao Long household. And when both people are on board and have secure belief in their love for each other, there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone clenches their butts first time hearing it though. Yáng Xiǎolóng (陽小龍) is literally "Sunny Little Dragon" adding Tài (太) at the front (for Dad's name) just makes it "Very sunny little dragon" And yes, Faunus get exactly one animal trait (though that one trait can include a more extensive system than just ears, horns or tails). In terms of genetic inheritance, The faunus parent's trait is dominant over humanness, and similar types of faunus will usually produce a similar faunus, but two drastically different faunus types might result in the child having a third faunus type rather than that of one of their parents.

Symbolic Remnant

WE GOT A DOUBLE EPISODE DROP, PEOPLE!! 🤩

khnadnn

That scene with Yang and Tai joking around worked really well on you. Like the teachers, you are watching two people interact without knowing any context of their relationship. And just like them, you asumed the joke about Yang's arm was over the line just for Yang to laugh. You now know how Oobleck and Port felt.
