RWBY - Vol. 4 Ep. 3 - Reaction (Full)

Comments

So yeah, you get a taste of how Sun is basically treated this season, which sucks cause he is genuinely such a good guy. Honestly my biggest gripe with this particular season (and is why this is the season my opinion of Blake went downhill going from my favorite of the four at the start to the least favorite by the latest season) It doesn't matter if it's played for laughs or what the genders are, the physical abuse 'jokes' aren't funny. Swap the roles but keep the context the same and it wouldn't be funny at all, so why would people think Blake slapping Sun is supposed to be funny?

Adrian_B

The thing about Sun is that it's not the first time he likes to stalk or snoop around. For example back in Volume 2, he was caught hanging by his tail looking through Team RWBY's window while they were getting ready for the evening to do some investigating. Sneaking around and trailing people is his unfortunate shtick because he has no self-awareness. The other characters you mentioned, don't have a history of stalking people like Sun does so realistically it wouldn't happen. But I just read that this is your first watch, which is amazing by the way! We need more viewers so it's great to see more people engaging with this franchise. So I completely understand where you're coming from since it's your first time viewing these episodes. And I hope you continue to follow along. There's some nuances that will be more understandable as you progress through this series. One thing about RWBY is that it's long form story telling where they plant seeds in earlier volumes and it builds as volumes progress. This fandom does a lot of rewatches which is why we can point out things but sometimes it make take a second rewatch to see if we missed anything along the way, because if there's one thing that CRWBY (the RWBY production crew) loves to do as well as Monty Oum himself, is plant bread crumbs of information. So if there's anything that confuses you, please feel free to ask. Some of us would be more than willing to answer any questions as long as it's not spoilery. And also Welcome to RWBY! :)

Mare

Yeah like I totally get that in this moment he's just a dad trying to help his kid. I have no problem with the intention, but it's still a discussion I think you should have before it show it to her. It's a complicated subject for sure, though.

BGTitan

Wait, I'm confused now - I didn't think Sun knew anything specific about Blake's relationship to Adam. Maybe that it was a mentorship, but I genuinely can't remember? Anyway, I agree that he should've 100% revealed himself to Blake sooner, and that Blake's headspace is not suuuper great at this point. I still personally don't think that Sun "deserved" to get slapped. Getting reprimanded, yelled at, ignored? Sure. Physically assaulted? No. I think about it like this, would I have been cool with this moment if I replaced the characters in this scene? Would I feel the same way if Blake slapped Ren for secretly following her? What if it were Jaune being followed by Weiss after something traumatic like losing Pyrrah - does Weiss deserve to be slapped?

Rye-Ah

Tbf it's similar to HB with imps, not all trans characters are named some are just chilling in the bg which is realistic

Phoenix Mackenzie

Yeah I get the whole "look at this awesome that'll help you recover ect" but it's unintentionally insensitive, tbf it's not entirely his fault though iron wood had already started work on it. A better way definitely would have been to set it down and tell her what iron wood had done for her but make sure she knows theirs no expectations for her to wear it or even look at it if she's not ready but it'll always be there when/if she chooses to use it

Phoenix Mackenzie

Yeah suns a very golden retriever type person and unfortunately for him it's getting him into bother

Phoenix Mackenzie

Yeah sun really feels like a monkey with the personality of a golden retriever 🤣 I love it, literally just we're doing X? Cool let's go. You're upset? What happened, How can I help, What do you do need? 🤣

Phoenix Mackenzie

The Fall of Beacon impacted all of RWBY, it's just that Ruby is (mostly) the only one who has buried it in order to /do/ something. The other three are kind of in a lost state and working themselves out. The song for the Sea Serpent fight is a great song, though it's used as the Sun/Blake shipping song mostly it's still a good piece about how the two interact. (Like Morning Follows Night is the song and the full version is on the soundtrack.) "It'll be a regular journey to the East! Yeah, I like the sound of that." Call out to Sun's myth basis, the Monkey King and the Chinese fable of the Journey to the West.

Arashi

Imma have to agree with the others, Rye-Ah. Sure, Sun had good intentions and it's great he wanted to help but watching her from afar for presumably days or weeks in a DAMN HOODED CLOAK knowing full well she's a victim of trauma with Adam and the White Fang (and is paranoid in general due to it) crosses the line into stalking. He had no reason to not approach her the second the boat was on open waters, he absolutely deserved the slap.

Nektis Noir

Yang's aura is yellow, not red.

Bryan Forquer

Two things can be true at once. Blake a victim of an abusive relationship reacting poorly and slapping someone who is her friend who had clear romantic interest in her following her and only revealed himself bc of the grimm. Sun wanting to support his friend after she went through a traumatic experience instead of letting her leave alone and isolate herself. Neither of them acted in a way that was good or healthy or understanding of the others feelings

Rachel Mae

i was away from internet yesterday, so happy to see it now! btw, idk if this has been explained since it happened, but the red glow around Pyrrha was her aura breaking, its something everyone has. Ruby's aura is red, Weiss's is white, Yang's is red. and Blake's is purple. aura is what allows the fighters to grab blades by their bare hands, its a protective shield. when they are out of aura, thats when things can really hurt them. this will be important in this volume and the next one.

proplaine scrumpy

LOL that's so true. The girl can swing the other girl built like a tank with her ribbon. I love how these characters are "Don't judge a book by its cover" themed.

Mare

That wasn't a "love at first sight" sound effect. It was a sound effect that they use for Awe or Wonder. It was to indicate that Sun knew Blake was a Faunus and Blake was kind of shocked she was caught. And yes, they did have a intrigue and mutual attraction (Sun definitely dug Blake from the beginning) because even Miles (who wrote them) mentioned it was to show that Blake (following her allusion to Beauty and the Beast), wanted to demonstrate she was like Belle from Beauty and the Beast and the original novel, that Blake could attract many people, just like Sun. It was like showing adolescent attraction due to common similarities like both of them being Faunus, so Blake automatically trusted him over most humans during the Beacon Arc because she was still weary of most people (Humans). However it never went much further than just an interest because of Blake being emotionally burdened by her past and now present circumstances. The true friendzone moment was Volume 3 Episode (End of the Beginning) where there's a wide angle shot of Sun in the background looking at Blake's adjoined hands with Yang both in the foreground. That was his brief "Oh I see how it is" moment. And the way that scene was staged was the classic "Outsider Looking In" like he was an intruder (the side character) observing an intimate and connection brought by the urgency between two main characters. "Love at First Sight" music in movie/TV moments is very similar sounding to Rachmaninoff symphony No.2 in E minor or even moreso "Ah! Sweet Mystery Of Life" and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture-love fantasy theme utilized in a comedic manner.

Mare

,,You know that feeling when you are so invested in a show that when your favorite character is not okay, YOU feel it personaly?" - Me watching Vox Machina: Yeah I get that... Vax, you are one hell(s) of a complicated character. (If this show keeps on this upward trejectory in terms of narratives than I don't know if I can survive Season 4 emotionally)

LikeCat

Don’t know if you ever considered doing one if you already haven’t done a game video of you and Moscow playing split fiction

Christopher Herrera

ah yes, the Yangst era has begun! now we get to appreciate Blake's ears as truly intended. and the reasoning for why Blake left... that's gonna hit Elijah right in the feels for sure. but at least we have Menagerie moments coming up.

Cinder's Apologist

I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one? The way I see it, "Character A follows Character B when they go off on their own" is a very common trope that doesn't normally end in Character A getting slapped. In fact, it's usually seen as a good thing, especially when Character A is the protagonist. I didn't interpret Sun following/helping Blake as a perceived-damsel-in-distress situation. It seemed more like he was thinking "oh this is a badass girl on a badass mission, I wonder if I can tag along?" Much respect to you, it seems like you're a fan and that's great! I'm personally just a first-time viewer like Elijah who's trying to keep an open mind about /all/ the characters. If Sun's a secret villain who deserved to get hit after genuinely trying to help Blake - that's not something I know yet

Rye-Ah

Sun was stalking Blake, invading her privacy, and constantly sticking his nose into Blake's business when it didn't belong. Plus he was low key treating Blake like a damsel who needed saving. He absolutely deserved to get slapped.

Bryan Forquer

Sun's a really funny guy and his personality is such a dichotomy to Blake's own personality which has me believing that the spark they had was Blake being reminded of Yang's own personality. And here we see Blake showing the early signs of her guilt and self-blame for what happened to Yang. We are in the "Yangst Era." And the reason I bring up the comparison where Blake's reminded of Yang by hanging out with Sun, is Yang's own name. It's in her simplified Hanzi character form 阳. The traditional form of that Hanzi character is 陽 and both forms mean "Sun." And Yang is a larger than life character whose personality and semblance is the literal embodiment of the Sun. She's the Yang to Blake's Yin which just adds to their already existing connection. It is also connected to the word "Heaven." Yang's name represents "taking action rather than being passive" so it really plays with the kind of personality and journey she has on RWBY. In the Volume 1 Director's Commentary for the episode (The Stray), Kerry, Miles and Monty had a small discussion over a simple scene that wasn't directly about Blake and Yang but still relevant: =Volume 1 "The Stray" CRWBY Commentary= (Team RWBY introduce themselves to Penny) Miles: Oh, I love this. Uh, another glimpse of what Blake and Yang's relationship is like. (Monty laughs.) {Kerry: Yeah.} 'Cause Yang's kind of a loose cannon and Blake keeps her in line. Kerry: She reels her in. Miles: That, that is really what I do love about Team RWBY, is that, we have these two pairs of girls, each pair is completely contrasting characters. Ruby and Weiss that causes them to butt heads, Blake and Yang? They get along, flawlessly {Kerry: Yep.} most of the time. Monty: Yeah. ------------- Sun's own name in Hanzi which is typically pronounced "Suen" in Chinese, is 孙. His name has various meanings but it's mostly associated with the word "Grandson." However, it's also considered a pun because it sounds like the Chinese word for 'Monkey." His last name Wukong, is an interesting one because it means "Awakened to Emptiness." If you read the book "Journey to the West", the character Wukong Sun is this conflicted, morally gray character who finally achieves some kind of Buddha-like status as he finds enlightenment at the end of his journey. But the difference between the book's version of Wukong and RWBY's version is that in the original book, his personality is somewhat different. The Journey to the West's Wukong is arrogant and driven by his selfish desires. but his conflict drives him to finally repent and convert into someone more heroic. It's how he finds "enlightenment" at the end. RWBY's version, while NOT morally gray (he's a good person from the start) does fit the whole "Awakened to Emptiness" meaning to his name. But using the Pun form of his complete name 孫悟空 it translates to "Monkey awakened to emptiness." Sun really has no self-awareness so he comes off as someone who really pushes boundaries and I admit that made me feel really uncomfortable at times. His intentions are completely pure though but it can come off really aggressive with people who have trauma. Especially when it comes to someone like Sun who likes to be in your space. It can feel invasive at time. However, like I said, I was always aware that Sun's intentions were pure but it was thoughtless and inconsiderate at the same time. Nevertheless, there's no ill will in his body. He just doesn't have much social etiquette LOL.

Mare

It’s weird, Elijah is almost at the halfway point once she gets to v5 and yet it feels like she’s just now starting the series. It’s crazy how much changes between the beacon arc and now

Ryanne

I kinda feel bad for Sun. Dude was just trying to help out Blake and she slapped him. I get she's not in the best headspace atm but that was just uncalled for - I'm glad he took it better than expected at least

Rye-Ah

Yeah emerald and mercury are not super jazzed about all the grim stuff. Can't blame them they signed on to fight for cinder and now are mixed up in all this.

Maddie the witch

I am so painfully waiting for you to watch volume 9

Mennah Ibrahim

I knew you were going to love that Blake's cat ears are that fully visible, don't worry, they are out in the open from here on out. Her ears are other great example of how far the animation has come, not to mention the background now, you can really see her ears move and react to how she's feeling and what she hears, more examples of that will come later. So looking forward to when you'll be doing 2 episodes a week, will make it go faster and especially when you get to future volumes

Alexis Cardillo

Very good analysis!

Hollyhock

If you are going to have 2 rwby slots a week, i think 1 episode per video is fine honestly. But that's just my opinion! Regardless i'm so excited! Also i loved the reaction to Blake's kitty ears being freed. Enjoy all the cutesy expressions with them

Hollyhock

Yes, this is one of my favorite episodes of volume 4! We finally get to see my favorite girls again, and yeah it definitely sucks seeing Yang suffer. But Yang is strong, it'll just take time for her to get through it. It was also torture for me to see Blake and Yang separated and not able to be there for each other. I was definitely looking forward to seeing your reaction when Blake took the bow off, and watching Blake fight the sea Grimm wich is named Fei Long was pretty awesome. I think Sun absolutely deserved that slap in the face. I'm so happy that you'll eventually doing more rwby reactions each week!! Can't wait for the next one. ❤️ 🤍🖤💛

Bryan Forquer

Also. Blake's ears here are a great example of the art evolution in the show. With the new software, her cat ears can shift position to reflect her emotions, but the CRWBY are still working out how to get the different positions looking quite right.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

See what happens when you litter, Blake? A giant Grimm sea dragon comes and threatens your whole boat! Incidentally, said Grimm was very much an Eastern-style dragon, while Kevin back in the last volume was a Western-style dragon (well, a wyvern technically, but you get the idea). This is a theme that pops up other places too — just take a look at the standard map of Remnant...

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Ears! Lots of great moments in this reaction, but we were all looking forward to that one from you. It's just one of the many cool things we get with the animation engine shift and animation budget upgrades. It's always great to hear your speculation and theories, too. One of the reasons why I so adore volume 4 is how well it handles each of the characters' reactions to what they've gone through and how they move forward in their own ways. This chapter's first looks at Blake's and Yang's mindsets exhibits that so well. I'm very excited about your eventual shift to 2 reactions per week because that'll help you keep things in mind a bit more. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being good for how the algorithm treats you, too. But for now, I'm once again excited for next chapter and what your thoughts end up being about it.

pneuma163

One of the things I love about RWBY is how they don't just gloss over characters going through traumatic events. Over the first couple of episodes of volume 4 we've seen how everyone is dealing with what happened to them in their own way. It would have been easy with the time skip to just jump to Yang with her new arm and training again. But they didn't. They wanted to show us how she's been struggling with it, and while it kills me to see one of my favorite characters suffering, I love that they're exploring things like PTSD and grief.

SK Kramer

Yes Elijah. We finally have Blake’s bow off. I love Blake anyway, but her outfit here is just beautiful. 😻 🖤 Also same with Yang. When you have a favourite character and see them going trauma and pain, it’s so difficult. 😭💛

Liam Gradwell

MORE RWBY?! Ohmygosh yes please and thank you! There's so much backlog to get through and volumes 4 & 5 are a little slow on the pacing. So much character development and backstory is incoming in volumes 4, 5, and 6.

Eddie Murphy

I'm glad she'll be doubling up the RWBY eps!

Rando

Dan read the comments and no one maid the joke about yangs new arm. We all no the one.

Joe

Your "little" intro.... Oh my God.. ❤❤ (Memories) 🥲

El Patitas de Molcajete Takamachi

Blake may not be into Sun in that way now, but she definitely was into him even if it was briefly when she fist saw him. They plaid the chior background love at first sight sound when they locked eyes, and she was blushing bigtime when he painted at her after his teams round 1 victory in the tournament

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I don’t ship them but I definitely do LOVE Sun. I understand Blake’s anger towards him though; she was probably afraid that he was a White Fang member the whole time, not to mention he’s a very touchy person. Obviously he means well and that’s just his personality, but considering his obvious flirting/feelings for her AND her previous experiences with domestic abuse (which obviously Sun has no way of knowing about), it’s easy to see why his behavior may be triggering, hence the aggressive responses. I feel bad for both of them, Sun is trying to do right by someone he cares deeply for and Blake is going through intense paranoia and guilt, and their differences in communication is causing those things to clash.

Jittercritter

More RWBY per week? Sign me the heck up! This and Vox are my favorites! Also this look of Blakes... and when she takes that white coat off are my favorite period of all her outfits/styles. Cant wait to see your reaction to her home and its people, its pretty amazing!

Arius

Fun fact: Pyrrha's voice actress was briefly in this episode...voicing Lisa Lavender, the news anchor who talked about Adam.

Flufux

Well, Yang lost an arm and I have to say, right now my stepdad is in the hospital after a critical accident and we all got briefed on the possibility of him losing his leg. The way he is acting right now is like being in denial. So yeah, Yang at first not accepting the arm after losing hers, I feel I can understand it a bit better now after a close family member is going through a similar thing.

Fusssel

Been waiting for you to get to the Blake throwing away the bow scene since volume 1. it's such an Iconic moment where Blake discards something she's more or less hidden behind for a long time.

Hakori

I have been waiting for your reaction to Blake losing the bow. Also this is my favorite Blake outfit, so... wins all around for Blake this episode. Yeah, this chapter is the biggest offender when it comes to floaty fight scenes. Don't get me wrong, I understand they were still getting used to Maya and how to even do fights on that software, but it is a little distracting for me. The Grimm is called a Sea Feilong if I'm remembering correctly and it is definitely one of the more unique Grimm. I also enjoy that the crew got to help finish it off. Ponytail Yang!!! I appreciate Tai's gesture here but I feel that is something you should at least discuss with a person. Regardless, it is painful seeing my girl going through it like this. You mean you're going to bless us with two RWBY episodes a week? And depending on the length those videos may have two episodes in them? .... I think I need to sit down, you're spoiling us!

BGTitan

The cut from Blake, who loves to read, to Yang staring sadly at a stack of books? Especially since it immediately follows the line about needing people around you I see you, girl, missin' your partner

Andy

The end of the opening actually teases Blake removing her bow, when you see the backs of team rwby, Blake's cat ears are visible. She just has the bow in the rest of the opening to not spoil the reveal too easily, since the other shots are much closer

RibKoboldScout

and that’s why they call her Blake Swoleadonna lol

Rachel Mae

As always, I have a lot to say: - God I Love Blake's cunty little Mistral outfit. I am way too gay for it. AND THE CAT EARS I WAS SO STOKED FOR HER TO TAKE THAT DAMN BOW OFF. - I kind of miss ponytail Yang. She pulls it off so well here. But I imagine she's partially keeping it up to make her hair easy to deal with as she suffers with the depression aspect of her PTSD. - The sunset background!!! It's unfairly pretty and one of my favorite environments in the whole show. I actually have the V4 trading cards and the OFR for the fight is gorgeous (if anyone wants to see it I have a video showing off all the holographic details). - Everyone is always getting Blake to carry them (seriously she carries like 4 different people at varying points in the show). And y'know what, they're right. What a woman. - Like Morning Follows Night is one of my favorite songs of the series, which is ironic because I'm not a big fan of Sun and I get so happy when he finally goes back to his team. - Lmao I love the subtle cat bits like Blake flipping around to land on her feet. Wish we'd get more of them. - Fun fact that slap was written to be way gentler. Blake's voice actor (Arryn Zech) later commented on it being representative of her poor emotional state and how that can make an abuse victim regress to violence/reflect their abuser (in this case Adam) even if briefly. - I feel really bad for Blake though. She just had to deal with her ex stalking her and dismembering her best friend only for Sun to stalk her and then completely misunderstand her intentions for running. - "A regular journey to the east!" instead of a "Journey to the West"

Kiesen

On a minor, the ‘cute’ First Mate was voiced by non-binary Kendra Ziegler, who considers the character to also be NB. Never explicitly said in canon, but not denied by the CRWBY either. Not the best example of representation, but the thought is there.

Donovan "Ravenhull"

And here we see the BY-side of RWBY being haunted by trauma. Sun's "Journey to the East" line is a reference to "Journey To the West," the Chinese Story featuring the Monkey King Sun Wukong. Also: Thank you for passing the "dont cheer for the slap" test. Good move. Keeping it classy.

Symbolic Remnant

They’ve been setting up for Blake to run from the start 😔 V2chp10: “When you learned I was a Faunus i didn’t know what to do so I ran! When I realized my oldest partner had become a monster I ran! Even my semblance! I was born with the ability to leave behind a shadow of myself an empty copy that takes the hit while I run away” ^^which comes off as an extremely harsh way for Blake to view herself. You don’t just start thinking of yourself like that overnight. And then… V3chp11: “running away again? Is that what you’ve become my love, a coward?” …we see that it’s the result of a manipulative abusive ex who spent years grooming Blake to the point that she can’t even see how brave she actually is. She’s the one who inspired RWY to go after the White Fang and Torchwick in the first place. She throws herself at the Sea Feilong (the grimm in this ep) without hesitation. She threw herself in front of Yang to protect her from Adam even though she was hurt herself! Her actions prove she’s anything but a coward. In v1 Blake tells Sun she was “born into the white fang” and that the old leader stepped down 5 years ago she was only 12 going on 13! Adam was in her head for So Long! And so she runs 😔
