A bit of googling showed that paper to be a "fulu." It's essentially a written "spell" or "blessing" with the writing deliberately distorted to better communicate with gods and spirits. It seems to be more usually used for blessings, and I suspect that plopping them on demons to freeze them like this originated in manga/anime more than in Taoist tradition, but I'm literally just reading the Wikipedia article on this, so my suspicions are...not exactly well researched.

Another reason to NEVER watch previews, I too wasn't expecting them to drop so much information/spoilers after the first episode, but the writers really did go OLD SCHOOL on the production, 1st episode series preview, full one minute intro song, AND 13 episodes, we went back in time with this series

I had heard of this but from the title I thought it was somehow a spinoff of the Netflix version of Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
Now that I've watched the first two episodes I'm fully onboard and intend to drag my friends and family along with me the same way I did for Owl House and Wynonna Earp.
I would comment on the parallels between this and another show featuring a high school girl with supernatural powers fighting the forces of hell...
...but then I remembered that Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003 so the target audience for this show probably wasn't even born yet when that happened.
Great, now I feel old...

The paper slips Gugu is using are talismans and they are used in Buddhism (and Shinto) for exorcisms.

Really enjoying your and Mosco's reaction to this, especially the TV Trope PTSD ("Oh she's gonna die.." "Oh not a love triangle!??!" "No! he's going to be a twist villain, I hope not..." etc) which is hilarious.

Sometimes the show abbreviations throw me off and when I got a notification for this video, I saw JC and went "Jesus Christ??" so Jentry is Jesus confirmed.

,,They are gonna do a love-triangle?" - Its more of a love-square (?)... Is that a thing?. Anyway it is very messy, and (surprisingly) interesting.

Yeah, I cried at episode 1, too. They pack so much into these 13 episodes and it'll be fun to see your reaction to it. I'd be curious to know if you're gonna add this to the current rotation of shows for Patreon since it sounded like this might just be a substitute for VM on this particular day.
I heard about this show a couple months ago and it sounded interesting, but when you mentioned you had started recording reactions to it I actually got around to watching it. Also, I'm very tired of love triangles, but while it is present there's so much else going on that the show is more interested in focusing on that it only felt like a small negative mark on the show for me. There's just so much else to like and be interested in in the show. The music, animation, characters, and lore are just so fascinating.

Oh yes, this show slaps! It doesn't pull its punches. BTW, some random trivia: Jentry's Gugu is her great aunt, and the show's animated by Titmouse, who also does VM. Great pedigree there. 😉

So glad these are finally starting to go up!
Let's see... you're already 4 episodes in... As far as the potential "love triangle" is concerned, it's fairly minimal to the plot. Mostly background noise, but present. But yeah, it's kind of infuriating that too often the "strong female protagonist" comes with the "Which guy does she like?" plot line.
"They animated that?!"
This show has a *hard* PG rating. Like, I think it was toned down just barely enough to get the PG rating and audience. On multiple fronts.
Love the visuals. Love the music. I hope we get more of this series.
