"Many have made the mistake in thinking Blake and Adam were a thing but they weren't"
...yes they were. Not only does Blake directly talk about it in later Volumes but the DC comics for the show (which are confirmed canon) literally show them getting together and sharing their first kiss when she was in the White Fang. And several of the crew confirmed it right after Volume 3. Where in the world did you hear this wasn't the case?

Yes Jen Tayler, the voice of Salem; who's voice you heard at the start of the first episode: Is indeed Cinder's Boss.
But more importantly, Jen is the voice actor of Cortana From the Halo franchise. Which Rooster Teeth used the various Halo games multiplayer maps as the sets for their Red Vs Blue series.
Jen also Voiced Zoey in the Left 4 Dead Franchise and variouse Mario characters; including Princes Peach: from 1999 till 2007.

Welcome to the End of the Beginning, out of school way too early, we've lost good people, the era of peace has ended, Team RWBY is now split up for the time being, and you've finally met who Cinder answers to, her name was in the end credits so not a spoiler anymore, Salem, the Queen of Grimm. Now you're about to see the wide world Remnant and where like Qrow said, a day out there is worth a week in Beacon
Highly recommend you check out Ruby's character short before starting vol 4, it shows off the new animation style the series goes into from here on out and gives out a taste of what's to come in vol 4 as well.

There's actually a line from a character in Volume 5 that says otherwise, at least regarding to how she felt about Adam. As for the "ex" part that was brought up a few times during RWBY panels by CRWBY themselves during Q&As. It was also confirmed specifically by Miles Luna in the Directors Commentary for Volume3:
Volume 3 Directors Commentary, with the time stamp at 2:26:40.
The exact quote from Miles was "Meanwhile, [here's] the crazy, abusive ex-boyfriend with an ego trip."
As for the age difference between Blake and Adam, that wasn't confirmed so we don't have an actual concrete number how large or small their age gap is.

Well congrats on making it through the opening act of RWBY. You were more reserved then I was expecting, though the stomp off and cry/hug probably got a good bit out.
Yes that was Salem, voiced by Jen Taylor. Most known (in geek culture) as the voice of Cortana. There is.... A LOT.... of lore you're going to (eventually) get feed about her.
I would echo a lot of comments and say you should watch RWBY Chibi (off-camera or not) to help ease the Volume 3 ending and kicking off Volume 4. Along with the World of Remnant info-shorts that can cover a good bit of assumed world knowledge. (By which I mean, for example, why would someone need to describe what the Grimm are? They are, and have been, a fact of life for generations beyond generations.)
It would have also answer your 'what was that?' over the red ripple on Pyrrha as her Aura 'breaking' (which also means she can't use her Semblance, something to remember about all characters going forward.) which left her physically vulnerable to an arrow to the tendon, like her design-basis of Achilles.

So Pyrrha was referred to as the unbeatable fighter. Seemed to have no weakness, much like Achilles of Greek times. And the shot that breaks through her strong defense is a shot to the heel. Much like Achilles himself. And yes. This is where a LOT of us fans were traumatized. It really hurt losing Pyrrha.

Congratulations, you have now passed the initiation into the RWBY fandom! RWBY is definitely a roller coaster of pain, happiness, suffering, love, heart break, and more pain. But it is a ride that I will always sign up for! The woman at the end is the same woman that was narrating at the beginning of episode 1. She is the big bad villain of the series, she is the one that Cinder answers to!! As far as shipping characters go, if it's a pairing that you like then ship it as much as you want!! We won't judge you if you like the idea of certain characters ending up together. I absolutely love the idea of Blake and Yang together. I've been shipping them for almost a decade!! I can't say whether or not ships became Canon. But if it makes you happy, then go for it!! Also many people have made the mistake in claiming that Blake and Adam were a "thing". But they never were. Blake was about 14 when she first meet Adam, and he was in his early 20's at the time. Blake looked up to Adam and saw him as a mentor, and Adam developed an obsession with Blake. But they never "hooked up". Just to clarify. Also the Ozpin Vs Cinder fight is severely underrated in my opinion! Many people that have reacted to RWBY usually quit after volume 3 because of how traumatizing it is. But I hope that's not the case with you. We all want to see you continue this series to the end, we will all be eagerly awaiting to start volume 4 with you, and remember. We'll all be right here to laugh, love, and cry with you! Love the RWBY fandom ❤️🤍🖤💛

WELCOME TO RWBY!!!
yes, the v3 finale is hard to watch. it's supposed to be. but now, you know what sort of pain will come as they continue to twist that knife. believe me, though, the show just keeps getting better and better.
and to echo what others have said: WATCH THE WORLD OF REMNANT VIDEOS. they are essential viewing material for any avid fan interested in the broader lore of the show, since the main show obviously has time constraints and can't address all aspects of how the world of Remnant works or things like the other kingdoms (for now). they are also super interesting in how their narrators portray their topics - voices you should recognize ;)
also yes to watching the Ruby v4 trailer to get a teaser of that new animation.
and I highly recommend checking out RWBY Chibi too. it is pure silliness and wholesome fun, and it was made in part to lessen the pain for fans in the aftermath of v3.

So, before you start Volume 4, there's a couple things to be wary of. Firstly, there's a miniseries called World of Remnant that has a lot of the lore, and now that you've seen Salem the thumbnails aren't spoilers. So I would HIGHLY recommend checking that out, as it explains a lot of lore including how Aura and Semblances work, which is going to become more important later on. Secondly, there's another short called the Ruby Character Trailer which takes place between the two Volumes which you could check out if you want, it's pretty cool.

Go ahead and ship and speculate. For the most part, shipping in the fandom is well received and we enjoy the possibilities.
The red color you saw on Pyrrah was her aura breaking and that's why she was now getting actually hurt. Pyrrah was based on Achilles and that's why she got an arrow in the ankle. She was the perfect warrior with an oversight weakness that was her downfall.
Vex Valor
2025-02-21 23:22:16 +0000 UTC
Aura can be confusing to understand for ppl at first, but basically just think of it as like an extra health bar/shield. Everyone who is not a civilian has it (and each person has it in their own color, for example Pyrrah's was red, Blake's is purple)
After a certain amount of damage taken it breaks and thats when attacks can be mortal (with aura u can survive gunshots, without it youre done for)
tldr: aura is like a shield health bar, it will be shown slightly cracking after taking some damage and eventually "breaking" at which point attacks are actually lethal

To answer your question, the red shimmer that enveloped Pyrrha after the hit with the giant cog wheel was to signal her aura breaking. You will see this effect more often in the coming volumes. Its always scary since after the aura breaks the characters can now be easily hurt and in most cases can no longer use their semblances.

You're right. Makes me wonder then what Cinder is. Later commentary confirms that she's not a pawn, but also not a player, so maybe she's the rook?
Can do whatever she wants, goes wherever she wants (like she always wanted), and she's a major piece (as all Four rook pieces are considered) but she only thinks in straight lines- never watching her back.

So you may have already noticed (or someone may already have commented about this - if so, sorry!), but most (all?) of the character names and designs involve intentional references to at least one famous fictional/mythical/historical figures (like ruby = red riding hood, jaune arc = joan of arc, glinda goodwitch + qrow + ironwood = glinda + scarecrow + tin man, etc.). Pyrrha Nikhos' reference is pretty obscure if you don't know a lot of greek mythology, but makes a heartbreaking amount of sense if you do: there's a story about Achilles disguising himself as a girl named Pyrrha and living in hiding before eventually reclaiming his name and leaving for the Trojan War. Hence: epic hero, taken down by something as simple as an arrow to the heel 😭😭😭 (CRWBY also definitely went for some EXTRA big and mean foreshadowing wordplay in her name too, since Nike in greek = victory, so pyrrha nikhos = pyrrhic victory :((( )

Hey Elijah idk if you'll end up seeing this to avoid spoilers but I just wanted to say how much I've been enjoying your content. I found you because of The Owl House, stayed for Arcane and Dragon Prince and now you're reacting to RWBY! It’s been amazing lol. I can’t wait for all your reactions (especially with Cinder). It's going to be a long journey but an amazing one. RWBY has its faults but it will always have a special place in my heart. I remember watching the first 4 trailers when they came out. I've watched this show's whole journey. The amount of love I have for this show will never be replaced by any other show.
Before this too long I also wanted to see if you would like some info about the following volumes, I find that the openings can be a bit of a spoil until a certain episode in. Nothing major, just introductions to characters we haven’t met yet so if you’d like to be completely surprised when you see them then let me know! And there are some trailers you should watch before some volumes that are similar to the first 4.

Also adding to this as Pyrrha tells us in v1 aura is a physical manifestation of their souls! So Penny who had an aura which she had a soul and that’s just another reason why she was so special 🥲 rip in pieces Penny. Then there’s grimm who don’t have auras and thus don’t have souls. Learning the aura colors of our characters throughout the series is neat and you can often make a guess based on characters color schemes and eye colors

To answer your question on why Pyrrhas body had a red glow that shimmered down through her when the gear smacked her, that's her Aura breaking. Meaning she could no longer use her semblance and any damage she'd take would be lasting with full impact. Same thing happened to Mercury at the end of his fight with Yang (for him, it was silvery white). Starting with Volume 3, they started visually showing when Aura takes massive hits (usually indicated by short crackles of light) and when it breaks at it's limit (indicated by the light spreading out more and accompanied by a "shoom" sound effect).

Jen Taylor is who plays the character that is named as "Salem" in the end credits (she is the very last billed character, as the volume credits are listed as order of appearance/speaking). You may have recognized her voice because, at the very beginning of Volume 1, she is the narrator who introduces us to the main premise of the show itself, which is INCREDIBLY clever, in my opinion. Having "The Narrator" be revealed to be an actual character of the show -- but not JUST any character. The main overarching villain of the show. Absolutely incredibly well done.
(Jen Taylor also is known for Cortana, if you're into the Halo series at all.)
Also, Pyrrha Nikos' name is special in that "Pyrrha" alludes to the phrase "pyrrhic victory", which is a term that means "a victory that comes at a great cost, perhaps making the ordeal to win not worth it". Accurate. T_T

This has already been analyzed to bits at this point, but I still love how aspects of Yang and Blakes characters that we've been introduced to mix with the most painful result for both of them.
Yang's in pain because she lost a part of herself both physically and in terms of her identity, but losing Blake probably hurt her just as much. This was her partner and her friend. This was someone she'd opened up to and therefore made herself vulnerable to. As a result, she was left behind by another person she loves. Again. Blake unintentionally hurt her in one of the most personal and painful ways that she possibly could have by running away. How could Yang possibly not care?
And Blake? The partner and friend she'd grown to love was griveously injured while trying to save her. How do you repay that kind of sacrifice? How do you handle that kind of guilt, shame and selfhatred? After all, Yang was only harmed because Adam wanted to harm her. One of their last interactions even consisted of her comparing Yang to the MONSTER that has now hurt BOTH of them. How could she possibly face her?

This is a quote from Pyrrha’s VA that’s at the end of Shine the fifth installment of the RWBY manga anthology that’s focused on JNPR. This quote itself has no spoilers but Shine features moments from v7
“‘Are you really dead?!’ is a question I never imagined hearing on an almost daily basis, but...here we are.
When the dearly missed Monty showed me the sketches of Pyrrha Nikos his first words were something to the effect of: "This is Pyrrha Nikos. This is who we want you to play. She's gonna die..." but it didn't register as being a huge deal. And, well, it wasn't. Because RWBY wasn't RWBY back then. It was clearly special, but eight years ago it was just a cool web series that I was thankful to be cast in. Characters die in shows all the time. The full weight of Pyrrha's death/impact didn't exist.
Fast-forward a couple of years and RWBY's popularity explodes. I was meeting the kindest fans at RTX and hearing them go on and on about how much they loved Pyrrha and how they wouldn't be able to handle it if anything ever happened to her...UH-OH. Every time someone would extoll her virtues, my heart would break for them because, well, I knew what we all know now.
Looking these sweet souls right in the eye and NOT revealing the truth of her demise was probably the hardest and best acting I've ever done.
It touches my heart on every level that her popularity has continued to soar since the end of season three. I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten the chance to bring her strength, spirit, kindness, and occasional social awkwardness to life. Whenever I'm told that Pyrrha's an inspiration, I feel immensely proud. Plus, I'm a cereal, action figure, a custom race car, countless tattoos, and more. HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!
While her time with us was brief, her energy lives on and inspires us to love big, see the best in others, fight hard, and of course, to always believe in our own destiny.
Keep moving forward,
—Jen Brown a.k.a. Pyrrha Nikos”
(And then alongside her actual handwritten signature she draws a heart with an arrow through it bc she’s sick and twisted 😂)

I could comment on pretty much every bit of this episode but here's the main parts:
- We do NOT give the writers enough credit for how well they pulled off the Salem reveal.
Like, the "first" villain we meet is Torchwick, and he gives the impression of very low stakes. He does petty crime, the girls beat him and his henchmen easily, we can so do this! Then you find out that Cinder is actually the one controlling Roman, so guess she's actually the big bad. I mean, look at her, she's so calculated and ruthless, and she has the maiden power! She's also got that black queen chess piece that shows up when she breaks in! It totally fits her! But no, the villain was never Torchwick, it was never Cinder, it was Salem. She's the FIRST voice you hear in the FIRST episode, she was actually the black queen, and she was ALWAYS there- she was just so good at manipulating other people that we didn't know.
- Screaming crying over Pyrrha being doomed by the narrative. Here she was, being called the "Invincible Girl," constantly mentioned as untouchable and unbeatable, but she's taken down by the same thing as her mythological allusion- Achilles' heel. There was no world where she lived, she was dead before the story even started. (EDIT: An above comment reminded me that her name is also a play on Pyrrhic Victory. I wrote this whole thing mid-episode so I forgot to include that lmao.)
- Cinder, despite her love for psychological torture, refusing to physically torture anyone. Hmm, wonder why. I'm sure that doesn't reflect anything about her.
- Yang being so distressed over Blake in particular. Her feelings of abandonment, of betrayal. She finally allowed herself to trust and be vulnerable with someone in a way she couldn't with anyone else, and her worst fears came true. But so did Blake's.
- This finale initially makes the silver eyes seem overpowered, but as we'll come to see: they're really not. They're a target on Ruby's back.
- You should watch the Ruby short that's canonically set before V4 but after V3.

When I did a rewatch of the show to catch up with it I honestly considered skipping parts of volume three, but decided that I wanted the "full rwby experience". It was even more painful than I remembered.

Salem’s speech has deeper connections to Team RWBY
“Divide them, place doubt into their minds”: Yang’s trust in Blake is strained as she flees while Blake begins to question if the path she chose was the right one and struggles to come to terms that she puts everyone around her in danger
“Any semblance of power they had will wash away”: Weiss’s burgeoning independence is crushed as she’s whisked away by her dad back to Atlas, removing any positive influence she was gaining as her dad’s oppressive control returns to her life

Incidentally, the first song over the end credits is not just an absolute banger, but one of the greatest villain songs of all time. Also, the bridge is Salem's leitmotif, so expect to hear that a LOT going forward.

To be clear what happened to Pyrrah around the 14:30-14:40 mark is the visual effect for someone's aura breaking... which (I don't think?) has happened thus far in the show. Remember, aura is the "force field" as Jaune put it that all Huntsmen/Huntresses are able to generate to block an attack. It's also how Cinder could hold onto Pyrrah's weapon with her bare hands.

Back in volume 2, Yang told Blake about how her mom left her with Tai after she was born. I'm pretty sure that she's the first one that Yang ever told about this, and she already had a history of being left behind which makes Blake running away even more heartbreaking

Ruby episode one: Pyrrha! (Happy, joyful)
Ruby episode twelve: Pyrrha! (despair, sadness)
These sneaky writers!
And thus, we have finished the prologue of the show. What a way to end it.
Also, Ruby whose semblance is speed, was too slow to save the day.
That red affect on Pyrrha when she hit the wall after Cinder's attack was her aura breaking, it's why Cinder was able to land a fatal blow. We saw a similar affect when Merc "lost" his fight with Yang right before her final punch. That's why Yang was able to "break" his leg because his aura had been depleted. The visual indicator for aura breaking gets better as the series goes on.
The whole reason they had Cardin push Jaune into one of those lockers in V1 was to set up Pyrrha doing the same.
Pyrrha, The Invincible Girl based off Achilles, her undoing being shot in the heel. …. And because I’m a horrible person: She was in-Cinder-ated. Get it? Like incinerated? Get it? … like I said, I’m a horrible person.
“I don’t know. And I don’t care,” she said caringly, caring very much.
The reveal that the Narrator from the first episode is an actual character is so satisfying. Such a fun twist. She's voiced by Jen Taylor, who is most famous for voicing Cortana in Halo.
Be sure to watch the V4 Character Short before going into V4 proper. Just the one character short! Not any of the others. Those are for later.

One of us! One of us! Congrats on finishing prologue!
Anddddd now we see the real reason they had Cardin shoving Jaune in the lockers in v1 was to establish it could be done for this moment 🥲 I’ve rewatched rwby more times than I can count and even now Pyrrha vs Cinder has such Orpheus and Eurydice vibes. Maybe this time Orpheus won’t turn around. Maybe this time Ruby will make it to the top of the tower in time. But it can’t happen that way. They were doomed from the start 🥲
As dark as the end of volume 3 is i think it’s important to remember that rwby is ultimately a story about hope and moving forward no matter how dark things may seem. That’s personally why i always come back to rwby when the world feels bad and i need a familiar comfort show.
I’m constantly rotating Cinder around in my brain like a rotisserie chicken. For a lot of reasons but all I can say about it rn with the information available in v1-v3 is 1. You recognize our Big Villain bc she’s the narrator! And our Big Bad herself says v1chp1 “but take heed… there will be no victory in strength” that part in particular as well as her entire narration in v1 and v3 is very telling 2. v3chp7 begins with Cinder speaking to who we now know was the salem/the narrator and she says “I want to be strong… I want to be feared… I want to be powerful” 3. Finally in End of the Beginning Cinder tells Pyrrha “it’s unfortunate you were promised a power that was never truly yours….” Cinder is so wrapped up in her desire for strength and power that it doesn’t even cross her mind that Pyrrha isn’t even there to take the maiden power away from Cinder. She’s there to attempt to stop Cinder.
Just oooh what the narrative and Big Bad herself tells us about where victory does/doesn’t lie vs Cinder’s own desires as a villain is so interesting
As we enter The Era of Yangst (lol) a fun game you can play going forward is spotting the space JNR leave for Pyrrha in a scene where they’re grouped together. The prize? Pain 🥲

You've met Cinder, the puppet, and now you've met Salem, the puppeteer. She was actually the narrator for the very first episode of RWBY, and there have been many hints about her in previous episodes.
The queen chess piece on the computer, that time Cinder seemed to be talking to some unidentified person, as well as these lines:
Ironwood: "When they see my ships, they feel safe, and our enemies will feel our fear."
Qrow: "You think they're scared of your little ships? I've been out there and seen the things she's made, and let me tell you, they are fear."
Cinder to Ozpin: "All this time, right beneath our feet. She was right about you: such arrogance."
Not to mention the message Qrow sent to Ozpin at the end of volume 1: "Queen has pawns."
Without spoiling anything, I will actually come forward and say that she's tied with Yang as my favourite character in this whole show.

Cinder is indeed stronger now and has more abilities. Her Fall Maiden powers were incomplete before.
The red electricity that went through Pyrrha was her aura. When aura does that, it's usually a tell that the hit on the person was so strong that even their aura goes out. They have to reactivate it if possible, but if they can't, they are very vulnerable.

If I may make a recommendation for Volume 4 video viewing order, just cause episode lengths & intensities do vary: Vol. 4 Character Short & 4x01, 4x02-3, 4x04-5, 4x06-7, 4x08, 4x09-10, 4x11-12. Just cause episode 8 is a long one, though you could theoretically pair that with 9 & have the final episode of the volume be solo. Just wanted to make recommendations before you dive in.

"There'll be no rest
There'll be no love
There'll be no hero in the end
Who will rise above
And when it ends
The good will crawl
The shining light will sink in darkness
Victory for hate incarnate
Misery and pain for all
When it falls"
It was all in the intro, and it became more and more clear as the volume went along.

Also, you’ll see many characters have a sort of colorful glow around them when they take a hard hit. That would be their aura (which protects them from fatal damage) breaking. In later seasons it’s a bit more obvious when their aura completely breaks, but in this season the red glow around Pyrrha when she crashed was her aura failing leaving her vulnerable to actual damage.
