Anthony Mackie in the Falcon’s classic costume.
The show “Falcon and Winter Soldier” started yesterday. One of my main gripes about the MCU is the military presence. The movies and shows are never critical of the government or the military, and many characters (such as the Falcon) have the military to thank for their origins, and continue on as operatives of the war machine. It’s funny that Wikipedia omits the character’s story from after his origins, to the 2000s. But I remember him as a guy who was an altruist, dedicated to mutual aid and community service, despite a rocky adolescence as a street thug after tragedy and disillusionment with the world. He wasn’t a military guy.
They’re bringing in the US Agent, the guy who replaced Captain America when he quit because the government doesn’t represent “American Values” anymore. Will we get Sam at odds with the government? Maybe, but not as much as Cap often was in the comics, I bet.
The Winter Soldier takes his name from an anti-war movement of veterans. I’ve yet to see anything anti-war or military about this Winter Soldier.
There’s so much course correction that needs doing here, but I am not confident that Marvel Studios and Disney are going to do this. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
