Agreed, the drama made characters like xue yang and a-yao appear way more evil than in other adaptations (excluding the donghua here for it's still ongoing and may derail from the original even more in the upcoming season.) But the reason the drama did so is because Chinese drama industry seemingly needs to have clear cut between hero and villain. It's pretty silly that characters are not allowed to be more dimensional and grey - often times that makes them more human and relatable. Even wwx made appear as more of a hero than flawed, complicated character (the appearance of second flute, etc.)

The story of a-yao in the book (and in the audio drama) has always seemed terribly tragic to me, if in the drama it is impossible without the division into bad and good heroes, then the book makes everyone gray.
I feel sorry for the boy who faced the cruelty of the world towards him, his mother, his origin as the son of a wh0re.
As A-su said, after so many years in the vile Jin clan, the little a-yao boy with the childhood dream of recognizing his father was left with nothing but his post of leader, for which he would do anything.
A realistic hero just like xue yang, not trying to appear as the main evil in the author's perception, just a person, who lived his life like this(although I cannot draw a direct parallel between them, they are too different, but at the same time they converge perfectly).
It is a pity that the drama changed many details and it is impossible to sympathize with the hero and understand (just like we turned a blind eye to many of Wei Ying's mistakes from the books and audio drama, because of which readers feel terrible if they take his place).
Like Wei Ying, I love a-yao with trembling, despite many things, so
i apologize (for my mistakes in English too :( ) for the many words, the series with a-yao backstory is one of my favorite parts.
I'm also talking about drama about staging with live actors (in my language it's called differently, I'm afraid to confuse audio drama and drama). thanks for your reaction!
