Usually, Leif had sailed with fast boats for summer raids and mercenary missions. After he learned how much wealth Tapani and his crew made on their long expeditions, he wanted to join them. Summer raids were dangerous, and now Leif had a girl he wanted to make happy. Leif was a good hunter and knew how to process animal skins. It would be easy to join any trade mission and sell furs in the nearby villages. But that was not enough for Leif. He learned that the fur price was huge in the south, and warriors like he would get good compensation in the dangerous expedition. With the wealth he could gather from such a trip, he could make his future wife happy.
While Leif was thinking about how he could join the next expedition organized by Tapani, he forgot to ask what his future wife was thinking about his plan. Annika was not excited to let his future husband go on an expedition that would take a year or two. Instead, she wanted her to stay at home, participate in tavern work and sell the fur in the local market. But she knew that warrior like Leif couldn't be tamed. Then, of course, Annika would allow him to join on short trading or raiding trips. But an expedition that could take years was out of the question. Especially when a man like Tapani was giving his enthusiastic speech about the sea behind the sea. For Annika, that sounded like a mission of three years. She wanted to have Leif at home when their first child was born.
