Even if it doesn't take as long, making those new layers and making sure they fits together is it's own can of worms. It would be simpler it was just a paint layer on top, but to make sure it can be changed in case something goes wrong, I keep color and line layer separated (easier on the workload long term. Preview wise, better render as a gif/mp4).
