It is very rare that someone notice that moment in Elena's kitchen when damon is taking aback by Elena's compassion. That is a pivital point. An is encouraging that you get the show, where 30 % of the plot is express in body language.

2021-04-06 18:57:18 +0000 UTCOk. Damon arrived in town with his humanity on a dimmer switch, meanning that he is focussing on something, while he can't care yet. Little by little he start to feel again. And Elena treat him with no fear, and by getting through him, like not even his brother does, is gaining his respect. Questions Why Damon is pissed off with his brother, if he is been pissed off with him for 145 year it must be something really serious. He has definetelly and agenda that is not conducive with his brother being in town. So by killing people he is creating problems to convince Stefan to leave. Once he establishe that Stefan will not leave, he is trying a different approached by wind him up and making empy threats. He would never hurt Elena, she remind him of Katherine and he is starting to see that she is her oun person, not a copy of Katherine.
