QUESTION // sketching struggles

This is a little late, but for me I struggle with the sketch looking presentable the most, at least to my standards.

I sometimes struggle in getting accurate shadow shapes while sketching...which gets usually wrong and that results in making the form of particular part a little off and that changes the feel and structure of form sometimes...:(

I know this is a little late, but finding a pose and angles that don't feel redundant is one of my biggest struggles.

I personally get lost between methods and ideas. I start with knowing what I want but on the process I get insecure and start to order myself around on what method to use instead of using just what works for me. I don't think there can be a tutorial about this though 😅 xD I also struggle to prioritize. Not all the information need to be put on paper but I keep trying to put them all. I don't know what and how to chose (this maybe is fixable)

Oooh I’ll be excited to see what you come up with. Agree with Loni. My biggest problem is that what I picture in my mind isn’t what I manage to put on tablet or paper. Then I get frustrated and if I’m honest I tend to abandon the attempt. Lol practice and maybe stop being my own worst critic. Easier said than done. I would love to see how you bring life to the sketch. By that I mean that your sketches have a sense of flow, emotion, feeling. Something I really love and have never managed to do myself.

I really struggle with getting my sketches to be as accurate as possible. My freehand sketches end up looking off compared to the actual subject

interesting! for me putting a time limit helps me to just get the job done and not focus so much on small mistakes. in your case it creates a lot of pressure. i find this kind of stuff fascinating - how artist's brains work!

For me it is just starting off —getting into the right mood. Sometimes I'm too hard on myself. Learning to experiment makes the process so much more fun to do so — learn to love experimenting I guess you can say. I think it is because I put a time crunch on myself. And so when it's not going well or not how I envision it becomes frustrating.

i'll talk a bit about reference in my video! but as for your question, you could go both ways. i know there are artists who prefer to have their own reference material and go to great lengths to do it their own way. and then there are those who just let it go and try to add these elements from the imagination. I think both are valid paths to take. best of luck with this challenge!

I get confused with how much reference to use, and how to find reference for the pose and lighting that's in my head. Should I shoot my own reference with the right lighting setup, or should I just keep practicing from life until I can invent the right lighting and pose out of my head without reference? Shooting everything myself feels too time consuming, buti get frustrated trying to invent it from my head.

oo thank you!! recently i’ve been wanting to get back into sketching more. my mental blocks have more to do with /actually sitting down and doing it/ lmao. you might not be able to help with that though :’) i think it’s bc i’m out of practice so what i make isn’t instantly gratifying. otherwise, i’m relating to a lot of other things i’m seeing here!

I struggle with the fact it's a trial and error process (I'm still a perfectionist even though I've been trying to fight against it) and the fact that the elements on the face (eyes, nose, mouth,...) don't always look they're on the same perspective view.

I struggle with a pose most of the time. Often not getting the pose right in the beginning. Most of the time it looks to stiff and unnatural. Also head proportion can be a problem compared to the rest of the body. Also drawing kids then is a challenge regarding proportions.

I absolutely struggle with the messiness of sketches and the proportions (when it's not digital) - when it's digital it's more an issue of doing proper hands and not only two blobs and the eyesize that is always a bit too big when still in sketch.

Ooo, mine would be... - How to sketch flowy faces/heads with large characterful eyes without ending up with big ol' "Disney eyes" 🤔 - How to contour hatch in a more fluid way - How to hold back with line weight - I tend to get carried away with adding final lines, especially a heavier outline, and often it can destroy some of the charm of the original sketch. 😊

Yesss so excited for this one!!❤️ Besides the more concrete things like making confident lines, I find that I struggle with sketching towards a goal? Like how should I approach a sketch session if I want to practice something in particular like anatomy or hair, and what to draw if the goal is just to relax? For those days where just looking up a bunch of references and start copying them doesn’t feel very productive or fun :) Loving these tutorials!!

Yesss a sketching tutorial!! <33 This is the perfect timing :,,0 At the moment for me personally, I struggle with placement of facial features. If I put a lot of construction lines down the drawing already feels cluttered before I even begin, however without them a lot of features end up in wonky places! The same can go for jawline shape as well haha. Thank you for all of these tutorials, they are super nice!!

If I have reference I can sketch a pose more or less so that it doesn't loose all the dynamism. If I sketch from my mind eeeeverything is stiff. Also I struggle a lot with making flowy soft lines and not hairy lines that sometimes get way too hard. Basically I cannot control the pen properly X) Confident lines? What's that... I think I draw too much from the wrist, which doesn't help. And I think that's also due to my set up. But I haven't found a comfy way to have space to move my arm more either ahh...
